England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith speaking to Sky Sports: "If you look at where I was at Trent Bridge, I was moving around a lot, it wasn't necessarily as comfortable as it is now. Trying to stay as still as possible has been the best thing, even if sometimes you might not get in the best position, you're just trying to stay as still as you can to catch it.

"I've got a couple of slightly dodgy fingers, little things to mask them. The gaffer Stewey [Alec Stewart] has been on at me to get a splint, things he used back in the day. I think you've got to accept there's got to be these little things, but it's actually quite enjoyable as well, it's bringing a little bit of success, is obviously the main thing.

"Saving your hands is crucial if you're going to be doing it over a Test match over five days and across the series that's mightily important. It's easier to replicate the speed [with tennis balls] without damaging your hands. I sort of liken it to if you're batting and you're facing bouncers, a lot of people use yellow balls to replicate the high speeds. You're not throwing a cricket ball at you and damaging you forever.

"There's now a bit of confidence on both sides, him [Ollie Robinson] bowling he's a bit more comfortable with me coming up. It's the same for both of us, we've got a bit of understanding on when to come up and when not."

High praise for Ollie Robinson and Muhammad Abbas, while Jamie Smith enjoyed his "best Test for a year".

Joe Root on Ollie Robinson's bowling performance: "He's bowling beautifully. If you asked good questions of guys' defence for long period of times with a wicket that gives you assistance, you're going to cause problems. He's been phenomenal, relentless.

"Good contrast with the guys on the other end as well, you've got 90mph from the other three. Even Gus today bowling 90mph at times, it's really impressive stuff. I think it's a really well-balanced attack.

"The more they can complement each other's skill sets, it's only going to be a good thing for us moving forward. It's just getting used to it, seeing how it works, having a good understanding of it for me as captain, for them as bowlers and for us as a side and the more that happens I think the better for it we'll be."

There's plenty of time between Tests now for the bowlers to rest, so you'd imagine they'll all be feeling pretty fresh for Edgbaston on 9 September.

You'd also expect slightly friendlier batting conditions, though!

More from Root, discussing England's first innings 290: "The way Dan [Lawrence] played in particular, I think he got a really good tempo on that wicket. You clearly had to take a bit of risk with how naughty it was and how it was playing at that time.

"But it was brilliant to see him come in and show two very contrasting ways of playing within his own game, and for us to amass the amount of runs we had in the conditions that we have had to deal with, I think has been really impressive.

"So again, we will have a new set of challenges and conditions to deal with when we get to Edgbaston. Can we evolve again? Can we adapt to what's in front of us? Can we keep broadening what we've achieved so far in this series?

On Emilio Gay's innings yesterday: "Sometimes you have seasons where it's just hard for batting and you look at the amount of movement there's been throughout the summer, particularly here at Lord's.

"You're at the top of the order against fresh bowlers, against a fresh ball and it is the hardest time to bat so I think you've got to have context around everything and the way he's playing, the way he's lining it up and that 30 on that pitch is worth a lot more.

"It's almost the equivalent of a 70 on a flat wicket. I think that's important to remember as well and that's the same throughout the batting order. In the context as a game, I think it was a brilliant knock, and he should take a lot of confidence from it."

England captain Joe Root, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra about how it feels winning the series: "It does feel good and fully deserved as well. The guys have been excellent.

"I think we had the worst of the conditions for most of the game, obviously a bit of assistance towards the end there but we had to work hard for it towards the back end. Fair play to Saud [Shakeel], I thought he played nicely but the relentless nature in which the guys kept coming at you always felt like we were always going to create chances and we were going to get there in the end.

"Brilliant performance. Nice to start how we have and we have got to keep rolling forward and looking at how we can keep improving and building on these two games."

Pakistan captain Babar Azam, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra: "Very disappointing. I think in the first innings we had a very good start. But in the first innings we did not have a good score.

"I think the way [Muhammad] Abbas bowled was an outstanding spell and then the second innings again we were not up to the mark with the opening batsman and then collapsed. I think the way Saud [Shakeel] played was good.

"We wanted to keep them under 250 because we took early wickets but I think [England's] tail was very good to get runs on the board and get 290."

On England's pace bowlers: "They are a very decent bowling line-up because they have three quick bowlers and momentum. With the new ball and the conditions, Robinson was using his skills and the rest are quality fast bowlers, so I think [they have] a good bowling line-up."

I guess you go back to day one when Pakistan won a good toss and had England 70-4 with Harry Brook and Joe Root back in the pavilion. That was Pakistan's chance to really step on it but Jamie Smith played great and Jordan Cox did really well in the first innings and 290 in the conditions that they were asked to bat was probably 150 over par.

They should've really been bowled out for 140/150. That was Pakistan's chance and they didn't take it. There on in, we know this Pakistan batting line-up is so vulnerable against such a potent four-man attack.

Player of the match, Ollie Robinson: "I think the slope always has something to offer, even when it goes a little bit flatter there's always something there. For me, it was a great pitch to just keep the stumps in play and nibble it either way, and always nice to contribute to a win.

"The consistency, yeah [is the key]. I've had a few starts, a few injuries but playing back-to-back Tests - it's nice for the body to come through that. I've just tried to hone in on my skills and be as consistent as possible. It helps when you've got three guys bowling 90mph as well, it allows me to just dot up at one end and build the pressure. The four-man attack we've got, I think it's going to be very successful.

"My role doesn't change, it allows me to be a bit more defensive if anything. I can just hold and be patient, and not try to punch through the batters. Jof and the other guys can then bowl rapid and break it up at the other end. It's quite a nice pairing to open the bowling with, someone bowling that quickly and swinging the ball the other way from me. Long may it continue."

With the prodigious lateral movement off the pitch and inconsistence on the odd occasion, this Test has been extremely challenging for the batters.

Across this Test batters have played 32.6% false shots, that's one in every three deliveries. Of the 800+ Tests in the last 20 years in our database when such records began (since 2006), only one Test has had batters play false shots more often.

England take a 2-0 series lead with one to play, and there hasn't been much to celebrate from a Pakistan point of view.

However, they have produced two of the finest performances of the series in this match.

Muhammad Abbas bowled beautifully for his five-wicket haul with celebrations to match and although Saud Shakeel fell agonisingly short of his century, 97 runs on this pitch was quite the effort.

It's the start of a new regime for Joe Root with Stephen Fleming waiting in the wings. They are fortunate that they have played a side that are struggling in these conditions, so it's all going rather smoothly for the new regime.

We have to be careful not to jump to any optimistic conclusions because all the evidence points against Pakistan but they have done the job and it will give them all a bit more confidence.

This pace attack looks very effective in these sort of conditions.

England have been flawless in this series and clinical in style and execution.

Pakistan will be wondering what to do next. It's been a tough gig for them, and except for Saud Shakeel and Muhammad Abbas, the others have fallen prey to England's excellence.

There's nothing to write home about. The Pakistan fans will be really dejected.

It was another superb spell from Ollie Robinson which set things up for England after they set Pakistan a very unlikely 389 to win.

Robinson finished with 4-24, taking his match tally to 8-35 in 27 overs - ludicrous.

Plus three for Josh Tongue and two for Jofra Archer as Pakistan finished 194-9 with Imam-ul-Haq unable to bat with injury.

It's a brilliant set up to a tailender, forcing Mohammad Ali onto the back foot with a sharp bouncer before going full and straight and Harry Brook takes a solid catch at slip.

Saud Shakeel played a magnificent knock but otherwise it was complete dominance from England.
