  1. Eng 150-4published at 37 overs

    Brook 49, Lawrence 2

Harry Brook may have survived that review but he's beaten again and again throughout a fine over from Muhammad Abbas. Brook had cruised to this point but suddenly looks uncertain.

Pakistan are trying to hurry through to get a couple of overs in before the close. They've found something late in the day.

  2. Not outpublished at 18:21 BST 9 September

Good decision. The Pakistan fielders were all asking for that review. They obviously didn't hear it.

    Brook's smashed it...

  4. Pakistan reviewpublished at 18:20 BST 9 September

Here we go. Harry Brook is surely out lbw here if he hasn't hit this.

The umpire said no but was there an inside edge?

  5. Eng 149-4published at 36 overs

    Lead by 16

Razaullah has it going here. Dan Lawrence is lurching awkwardly as the ball beats his edge. Good cricket.

Really happy for Gay. Feel the momentum was building for him being left of in SA. Think he’s shown there is something there worth persisting with.

People need to cut Emilio Gay some slack. He got fifties in two of the three Tests against NZ and is currently averaging 40-plus in this series, more than most of our top order.

Harry Brook leans over his bat after being done by a Muhammad Abbas beauty - the first time he has been troubled in a while.

  8. Eng 144-4published at 34 overs

That ball wasn't there for Emilio Gay to drive, especially when he had only just been beaten by one that swung in playing a similar shot. Not the best shot after a good innings.

It's a ball just outside off stump, pretty wide but it did nip back. There's no real foot movement from Emilio Gay there. He went for that expansive square drive and gets the inside edge.

There's that extra little bit of pace that gets you doing things that you don't want to.

Gay will be disappointed. He batted well again.

Bowled him! Emilio Gay who had worked so hard and spent so much time in the middle.

Razaullah has his second wicket. He's a bowler that can make things happen.

    Gay b Razaullah 60 (Eng 143-4)

The debutant strikes again! Razaullah is roaring in delight because, having just seen a ball go between bat and pad but miss the stumps, he bowls the driving Emilio Gay via an inside edge.

It's another decent score for Gay, his highest in Test cricket, without really deciding the debate over his future one way or the other.

    Razaullah has been impressive.

That's the hundred partnership for England. The previous highest partnership was 26 - that was the 10th wicket stand for Pakistan which was also the longest at 7.4 overs. This is now 21 overs long.

  14. Eng 139-3published at 33 overs

    Gay 56, Brook 45

Edgbaston breaks from its sleepy early-evening state to applaud the hundred partnership between Harry Brook and Emilio Gay. As Sir Chef said below, these two have batted England out of a hint of strife.

These two have had to earn the right. That's what I have liked about this partnership. The first 45 minutes when Joe Root got out they had to work really hard and scrap for every run.

  16. Eng 134-3published at 32 overs

    Lead by 1

Razaullah, tall enough and slingy with a quiff on the top of his head, gets up above 90mph in his comeback over. There's a bit of swing for him and the last ball hurries Emilio Gay. A mistimed pull still brings the single that takes England into the lead, however.

Do you remember that time Joe Root found a technical problem with his batting that he couldn't solve? Yep me neither! He'll work it out.

  18. Eng 129-3published at 31 overs

    Gay 52, Brook 40

Muhammad Abbas returns and brings some control before allowing Emilio Gay to flick a single off the pads off the final ball.

The impressive Razaullah is returning at the other end. He got Joe Root out in his first over in Test cricket earlier...

Emilio Gay has played really well. It's a compact innings. Compact in terms of if you watched the highlights how late he plays the ball in defence.

That celebration looked passionate but also shows he knows the importance of the next few hours of batting that he will do.

50 for Emilio Gaypublished at 30 overs

And now, after a quiet period, Emilio Gay capitalises on some loose bowling and fielding to take two boundaries in this latest over.

The second takes him to the third fifty of his England career - his first since the second Test against New Zealand in June.
