A couple of twos for Avishka Fernando off Gus Atkinson, to third and mid-on.

    Up creeps that required run-rate...

  2. SL 13-0published at 2 overs

Four more for Kamindu Mendis, driving Josh Tongue in front of point.

Prior to that, Avishka Fernando took a single in a similar area to get off the mark.

It was a staggering innings. It was a perfect template for the way a 50-over innings should be played.

Watchful at the beginning. Harry Brook, in particular, I think he was 11 off 25 balls before he got in his stride.

It should give England a lot of confidence that if they do allow themselves a little bit of time the sky is the limit for what they can produce in the last 20/25 overs, and Sri Lanka felt the full force of that today.

  4. SL 8-0published at 1 over

    Target 430

    Off we go then.

Kamindu Mendis hits Gus Atkinson's opening ball past point for four and then, having faced four dot balls, turns the England seamer's last delivery round the corner for another boundary.

Sri Lanka needed 8.6 runs an over at the start of the innings, so they just need to up their ante slightly and then keep it up for 49 more overs - then they'll be in the mix.

The players are out on the field, with Gus Atkinson set to open the bowling for England.

Before we get back to the play, let's take one more minute to soak up that incredible innings.

Shubman Gill might be a little disappointed today - his record for the fastest 200 in ODIs, made on 30 September when he struck 223 not out against the West Indies, lasted for just over three weeks.

Brook's innings was also the fourth-highest score by a captain and the highest score by a batter who wasn't opening.

That makes Brook the first ever England player with a triple Test hundred, double ODI hundred and a T20 hundred - already one of the all time greats and he’s still so young.

    Hugo, London

That's correct, Hugo - Chris Gayle is the only player to have done this in international cricket.

Had international T20s come earlier in his career then Virender Sehwag would surely have achieved this feat - he ticked off two of the boxes but only made a high score of 68 from 19 T20Is.

Thanks to Ffion, who is stepping away from a smoking keyboard.

The good news for Sri Lanka is that they don't have to set a world record chasing - that's still South Africa's 438-9 in the famous match against Australia in 2006.

It would have to be the second-highest chase in the format's history, though.

Well, that was great fun. It's fair to say that myself and Mike Peter had very contrasting live-texting stints there - he delivered 133 runs to my 296.

He's back in the hot seat now to take you through the first half of Sri Lanka's innings.

Masterclass from Brook! Was worried he’d run out of balls when Jacks couldn’t seem to get him back on strike for a couple of overs.

    Jamie, Glasgow

We all make mistakes and Harry Brook's no exception but none of us makes amends quite as well as he does. 202 runs in sensational style.

    Tom G, Oxfordshire

Quite a positive response from England after an opening defeat then!

Brook added 159 for the third wicket with Joe Root before that stand with Will Jacks completely took the game from Sri Lanka, who completely lost the plot.

They added 185 off just 79 balls together. After all the madness, England finished 429-3.

Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable to get 200. England barely got past 200 in the first ODI and Harry Brook has done it himself today.

It's just remarkable watching him. He's an unbelievable player. The way he was able to go through the gears to bat with Joe Root and weather the storm and as soon as that 30th over hit he flipped that switch and he went jalapeno.

Harry Brook is caught on the boundary from the final ball of the innings and soaks in the applause.

He finishes with 202 off 116 balls, and it's included 21 fours and 10 sixes.

Will Jacks' 66 not out off 30 balls goes pretty much unnoticed at the other end!

    A genius.

Harry Brook ramps over the keeper to bring up a simply astonishing double-century. Will Jacks celebrates with almost as much joy as Brook, arms aloft as he runs down the pitch to greet him.

    That was absolutely remarkable.

  15. Eng 423-3published at 49.3 overs

    And again!

The fielder launches the ball in from deep cover and Brook's legs look a little weary this time.

    Two more.

Incredible fitness from Brook, sprinting back to keep the strike.

Chipped up in the air and the fielder running around from mid-off can't hang on after a despairing dive.

Harry Brook has the strike for the final over, 186 runs to his name.

    200...?

Harry Brook is a freak, isn't he? He's such a good batter and so free-flowing. That record was always going to get broken at some stage and it was always going to be by Harry Brook.
