Lots of moaning about the weather but the last three Septembers we've had three great races... 2023 - Surrey vs Essex 2024 - Surrey vs Somerset 2025 - Notts v Surrey Have any of them been decided by rain?

    Bairstow LBW b Snater 5 - Yorkshire 139-5 v Essex

Yorkshire had been becalmed somewhat after losing wickets in short order, but Jonny Bairstow has picked up his first four with a push through backward point off Shane Snater.

But now he's gone - forward and across to the bowler and beaten on the pad in front of middle and off.

That's Snater's second and all-rounder George Hill is in next.

Yorkshire have slumped from 121-0 to 139-5 inside nine overs.

    Hay c Brown b Jack 49 (Notts 234-5 v Hampshire)

So close to a landmark on debut, but New Zealander Mitch Hay is undone by Eddie Jack.

The bowler gets a bit of extra bounce from back of a length and it catches the batter by surprise and it grazes the edge.

That ends a terrific partnership of 136 between Hay and Joe Clarke.

  4. Postpublished at 15:10 BST 8 September

    Durham 156-6 v Middlesex

Naavya Sharma replaces Tom Helm in the attack.

Colin Ackermann wafts outside the off stump - and subsequently leaves more "properly" outside off.

The fourth ball is punched through backward point off the back foot for a single.

Kasey Aldridge plays and misses, then survives an LBW shout - but that's too high. Thigh pad.

Libby lbw Procter 55 (Worcs 103-3 v Northants)

The breakthrough arrives for Northants as Luke Procter beats Jake Libby's defnsive push and the opener is sent on his way by the umpire.

Libby put on 83 with Adam Hose, who is 38 not out and has now been joined by Brett D'Oliveira, fresh from his unbeaten 103 in the last game against Kent.

    Derbys 168-5 v Kent

Glorious sunshine now over Derby as the floodlights are no longer needed.

Bertie Foreman twirling into his twelfth over, he would not have thought he would be needed quite so much today, especially when his opening bowler had two in two to start the match this morning.

Brooke Guest solid alongside half-centurion Martin Andersson now.

    Another one gone.

Chris Cooke plays across the line to a ball from Ed Barnard and edges to second slip where Rob Yates takes - what BBC commentator Clive Eakin tells us is - his 31st catch of the season.

The EB (Ethan Bamber and Ed Barnard) wickets spree continues.

    Bracey c Hurst b Balderson 21 (Lancashire v Glos 69-4)

James Bracey plays a fine back foot cut off George Balderson to get four throwuhg backward point.

But Balderson has his revenge with a super ball from round the wicket that shapes away enough to take Bracey's edge.

Two centuries last week from Bracey so he was a man in form. A valuable wicket for Lancashire.

100 up for Worcestershirepublished at 15:03 BST 8 September

    Worcs 103-2 v Northants

A little bit too much width from Ben Sanderson and Adam Hose slices it down to the third man boundary as Worcestershire's total reaches three figures.

Having asked the home side to bat first, Northants need to break this partnership, which is now worth 83.

  10. 6 runs

    Notts 216-4 v Hampshire

A little bit of flight from Felix Organ and Mitch Hay decides to take it on.

And he absolutely nails it, smashing it over mid-off for the first six of the game.

It takes Hay to 40 and he is playing a fine second hand to Joe Clarke.

    Wharton c Elgar b Critchley 3 - Yorkshire 132-4 v Essex

Four quick wickets for Essex from 125-0.

  12. Postpublished at 14:59 BST 8 September

    Glamorgan 50-6 v Warks

Glamorgan's 50 comes up as Chris Cooke turns Ed Barnard behind square for a single. He has now been joined by Mason Crane as the Welsh county try to somehow stem this flow of wickets.

  13. Postpublished at 14:58 BST 8 September

    Yorkshire 131-3 v Essex

A wicket maiden there for Shane Snater and Matt Critchley to continue with his leg spin from the other end with a slip, short cover and short mid wicket.

James Wharton hits one just in front of backward point when he tries to work away to the leg side - and then gets away with a very tight single next ball.

Matt Revis would've been gone with a direct hit.

    Notts 203-4 v Hampshire

    Oh dear, Hampshire fans.

Kyle Abbott gets an edge from Mitch Hay and it flies up towards Toby Albert, who dives to his right but the ball pops out of his hands.

A let-off for Hay, hands-on-hips for Abbott and a slump of the shoulders in the field for the side who are staring at relegation.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:51 BST 8 September

    Reece c Benjamin b Singh 32 (Derbys 155-5 v Kent)

Wow, the very next ball after the landmark brings the breakthrough for Kent.

There is surprise on many faces.

The standing umpire does not give it instantly, waits a while, potentially to check with his square leg if it carried, which it clearly did.

A great catch from Chris Benjamin diving forward wrong-footed, but it is not clear whether it took an inside edge or not, a hard one to tell, but the umpire must have thought so as it is given out in the end.

  19. 50 runs

for Jake Libbypublished at 14:50 BST 8 September

    Worcs 85-2 v Northants

Harry Conway strays onto Jake Libby's pads and is tucked away for a couple of runs, which take the Worcestershire opener to 50 from 91 balls.

Conway has bowled tidily for 0-21 from 10 overs, but Libby has so far added 65 for the third wicket with Adam Hose.

    Image caption,

It's been a tough start to the day in the field

It seemed a very sensible decision for stand-in captain Stephen Eskinazi to put Somerset into bat - my colleague Anthony Gibson from BBC Somerset was worried.

My hope did not last long.

As soon as Leicestershire's bowlers started bunging it wide outside off stump, trying to get Josh Thomas to throw his hands at it, I worried about their own belief in getting the most out of the pitch.

Thomas did throw his hands at it, by the way, and hit quite a lot of shots to the boundary (there were a few false shots, to be fair to Leicestershire).

Since then, the hosts have struggled to find any threat with the ball at all, and they've bowled 22 runs worth of extras. And for context, they have changed their entire bowling line up for this match.

Alfonso Thomas told me a few weeks ago they would need to rest players and "target" certain games. In leaving out some of their key strike bowlers, perhaps this is one they've chosen?

Josh Thomas and Tom Lammonby seem grateful for it...
