    Kelly Mpeku

That is why it looked ominous....

A powerful scrum and a penalty advantage but Lions did not need it, as Chris Smith executes yet another chip out wide and this time it bounces perfectly for Mpeku to score in the corner.

Smith is again wide with the conversion, his fourth missed kick today.

    Lions 25-12 Ospreys

It gets worse for Ospreys as Dan Edwards his yellow carded for a high tackle just metres from his own line.

Lions opt for a scrum and this looks ominous.

    Boeta Chamberlain

A cross-field kick from Chris Smith evades Kelly Mpeku, but the winger manages to scoop up the loose ball to Francke Horn and the No.8 offloads to Boeta Chamberlain to score.

After a check for a forward pass TMO Gianluca Gnecchi decides there is not enough evidence to overturn the on-field decision and that is a bonus point try for Lions. Smith then hits the post from out wide.

The Ospreys have to find a way to stem the tide here or this could get messy.

    Lions 20-12 Ospreys

Mark Jones has sent on a new front row of Lewis Lloyd, Cameron Jones, and Ben Warren and it does the trick as lo and behold, Ospreys win a scrum penalty.

The visitors trail 4-1 in that department today but a sign the fresh legs might make a difference here.

I don't want to dwell on a negative from what has been an absorbing game, but I dread to think the attendance at this 62,000 seater stadium today. Small pockets of fans amid a sea of empty seats.

I guess a lunchtime kick-off in South Africa is not that suitable for fans based almost 10,000 miles away in west Wales. Who would have thought?

  6. try

Try: Lions 20-12 Ospreyspublished at 50 mins

    Morne Brandon

From the penalty, Chris Smith sets up a lineout and that is an unstoppable maul!

Replacement hooker Morne Brandon is credited with the try and although Smith is again off-target with the conversion, the home side suddenly look dominant.

Ospreys ran out for the second half in the lead. That seems a long time ago now.

    Lions 15-12 Ospreys

Mr. Russo has already warned Lions for persistent offence and after his side conceded a penalty near their own line, now Liam Wright is summoned and warned the next offence will be a 10 minute rest for an Ospreys player.

    Lions 15-12 Ospreys

Is the energy sapping altitude already taking a toll on Ospreys?

A huge push from the Lions pack yields a fourth scrum penalty. Chris Smith boots them up-field and these are dangerous moments for the visitors.

Still on a knife edge this one, so necks on the line everyone.

Thumbs up if you believe Ospreys will fight back again and nick this one.

Thumbs down if you think Lions will kill them off from here.

  10. try

    PJ Botha

Well that did not last long.

Slight controversy as after consulting his TMO, the referee adjudges JC Pretorius kept the ball in - tapping it back before the ball hit a defender and went back out. So an Ospreys lineout is reversed in favour of Lions.

And they make the most of it with a powerful maul which yields a try for hooker PJ Botha.

    Lions edge back ahead.

Only two minutes into this half and already the Ospreys lead looks precarious.

Chris Smith chips ahead cleverly and only the bounce of the ball stops JC Pretorius from gathering and scoring.

If you are following in Wales, breathe easily. Just the 38 minutes to hold on...

One Ospreys icon who seemingly will not be returning home any time soon is Adam Jones.

On Thursday, it was announced the former Wales and British and Irish Lions prop has extended his contract as Harlequins' scrum and contact coach.

Jones, who spent time in the Welsh camp as a coach before the 2025 Six Nations, spent 11 years as a player with Ospreys and won 95 international caps for his country.

However this one finishes, Ospreys will be flying back to Wales to play next weekend - although their homecoming in St Helen's will have to wait.

In a Welsh derby, they go to Rodney Parade on Friday night to play Dragons.

Lions meanwhile, won't have to leave South Africa just yet but they will be out of Johannesburg for the first time this season when they face Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday.

The following weekend, the league takes a break for the first round of European matches.

    HT: Lions 10-12 Ospreys

That is no less than Ospreys deserve.

Refused to buckle after trailing 10-0 and finished that half in the ascendancy. In fact, match stats show they have had 58 per cent of possession and Mark Jones will sense a huge opportunity here.

  16. try

Try: Lions 10-12 Ospreyspublished at 13:32 BST 3 October

    Efan Daniel

Dan Edwards again finds the corner and a concerted shunt follows - before hooker Efan Daniel touches down!

No.10 Edwards is inches wide with his touchline conversion but Mark Jones will be delighted. His team head for the changing rooms ahead.

The Lions hang on in defence but referee Fillipo Russo has spotted another infringement. Another penalty - and a final warning for the hosts before the cards come out.

    Lions 10-7 Ospreys

Morgan Morse does brilliantly to rescue the ball from a retreating scrum and then in the attack that follows Lions prop Sebastian Lombard is pinged for offside.

Dan Edwards goes for the corner. Huge moment before the break...

    Lions 10-7 Ospreys

The Welsh side deserved that and they are on the attack again as Tom Rogers surges into the 22.

He is hauled down by the cover defence but that has gone forward off a Lions hand. Another chance for Ospreys here.

  20. try

Converted try: Lions 10-7 Ospreyspublished at 34 mins

    Kieran Williams (con: Dan Edwards)

Ospreys are back in this with a superb score.

Scrum half Kieran Hardy makes a break and links with Evardi Boshoff - who carries hard before throwing a sublime offload to centre partner Williams to score.

Dan Edwards adds the simple conversion and the deficit is reduced.

    Game on.
