English powerlifter Mark Swan secured the first gold medal of these Commonwealth Games a little earlier, though at first he didn't realise he had won.

"I never actually realised that I'd won a gold medal because my coach had kind of hid it - not like hid the results from me, but hid the process and everything away," Swan told BBC Sport.

"So all I set out to do was whatever was put on the bar I had to lift. If I lifted it then I've won.

"To realise that I'd won, it's hard to believe. I thought I'd maybe got a bronze. My coaches said 'no Mark, you've won', but I couldn't believe it. It hasn't sunk in yet, but I'm sure it will."

  4. What are the Commonwealth Games?published at 17:04 BST 24 July

The Commonwealth Games are a major international multi-sport event held every four years involving countries that are part of the Commonwealth.

The 2026 Games - taking place between 23 July and 2 August - are being held in Glasgow, Scotland and are the 23rd edition of a competition that first started in 1930 as the British Empire Games.

Unlike events such as the Olympics and Paralympics, countries that are part of Great Britain compete separately. That means that England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are pitted against each other rather than grouped together.

Part of the Commonwealth Games' legacy is being the first multi-sport event to fully integrate Para events.

England powerlifter Mark Swan claimed the first gold of the games in the lightweight category with a superb lift of 222kg.

Swan failed in his final attempt for a record-equalling lift of 232kg but the gold had already been secured after world record holder Bonnie Bunyau Gustin of Malaysia failed to lift 230kg.

"To get the first medal, especially gold, for Team England in the very first medal event, it's absolutely huge," Swan told BBC Sport.

"Hopefully this motivates the rest of the athletes in Team England to go out and push."

England team-mate Olivia Broome took home the bronze in the women's event with a lift of 119kg.
