Northern Ireland celebratepublished at 18:32 BST 24 July

Men's Team Final, plus individual apparatus qualifying

There's good news for Northern Ireland vaulter Ewan McAteer, even though he's not competing this evening.

His vault of 13.650 earlier today has seen him qualify already for the individual final on that apparatus, as has Rhys McCleneghan in the pommel horse.

    Just too good.

Meanwhile Elliot Vernon of Wales has added a solid 11.700 on the rings to his solid pommel performance.

Alexander Yolshin-Cash has indeed missed out on a place in the final on that apparatus, down in 14th after a score of just 11.550, a real shame for the youngster of whom much was expected.

Disappointment for Yolshin-Cashpublished at 18:28 BST 24 July

Men's Team Final, plus individual apparatus qualifying

Alexander Yolshin-Cash also comes off during his routine on the pommel and immediately reaches for the chalk bag.

He gets back on the horse, which we are told is always good, but his dismount also goes astray and this is likely to be a low score for the 20-year-old, who was fifth at the World Championships, and might make his quest for a medal here an uphill one.

Men's Team Final, plus individual apparatus qualifying

Luke Whitehouse produces a battling display on the pommel horse but his score of 12.400 is well below teammate Adam Tobin's 12.950, which is third best overall, just above Wales' Elliot Vernon.

Joshua Nathan comes off during his attempt but the difficulty of his routine means his score is still a pretty healthy 12.900.

England lead the way after first apparatuspublished at 18:16 BST 24 July

Men's Team Final, plus individual apparatus qualifying

Early days, but after the first rotation England's score of 40.450 is top of the pile in the team event, just ahead of Canada.

England and Scotland have moved on to the pommel horse, Wales are onto the rings.

McCleneghan's score beatenpublished at 18:14 BST 24 July

Men's Team Final, plus individual apparatus qualifying

Canada's Jordan Carroll has sent a warning shot to Rhys McCleneghan on the pommel horse.

The reigning Olympic Champion from Northern Ireland posted 14.500 earlier today, the 20-year-old has just eclipsed him with what looked a near perfect routine worth 14.550.

These scores are only qualifying for the apparatus final, remember, the only medal up for grabs here is the team event.

This is a sporting event, so you can never write off the Australian chances.

James Hardy has just pipped compatriot Jessie Moore to top-spot in the rings standings - 13.200 beats 13.000.

Evergreen Hamish Carter has posted 12.800 on the floor for Scotland and enters the top 10 on that apparatus.

Cameron Lynn's score of 12.450 is only good enough for equal ninth on the day.

Reuben Ward, the British all-around champion in 2025, is next up for Scotland, there are high hopes for him, and you can see why, sending down a clean routine for 13.150 points - fourth best of the day so far.

Men's Team Final, plus individual apparatus qualifying

Luke Whitehouse has just produced a stunning floor routine for England.

The 24-year-old World silver medallist, who finished sixth in the Paris 2024 Olympic final has posted a whopping 14.400 - by far the best of the day which should surely secure a place in the apparatus finals, which begin on Monday.

Joshua Nathan's 13.100 has made it a very solid start to the ream competition for England.

Men's Team Final, plus individual apparatus qualifying

Gabriel Langton was a late call-up for this Games but showed no nerves on his Commonwealth Games debut to post a score of 12.900.

Wales' Alex Niscoveanu produced a solid display on the pommel but a wobble at the very last proved costly and he has to settle for a score of 12.100.

Elliot Vernon does a lot better with a score of 12.850, second only to Rhys McCleneghan of Nothern Ireland whose imperious showing this afternoon earned him 14.500.

Adam Tobin begins the defence of England's team title on the floor.

His toes stray over the edge of the floor on a couple of occasions but he finishes strongly for 12.450 points. Fifth overall.

    Gabriel Langton is up next.

England are seeking a fourth straight team title and have topped the gymnastics medal table at the past three games.

However Canada are actually top in the all-time standings with 156 medals, 58 of them golds.

Australia are second with 151, 51 of which were gold while England are third with 116 medals, of which 45 were gold.

Six-time Olympic medallist Max Whitlock misses out with a hand injury while Jake Jarman, who won four golds at Birmingham 2022, is also absent for England with an eye on the World Championships in October.

Here we go then, subdivision three, better known to you and me as 'the big guns.'

India might be in pole position in the team event for now, but don't expect the 2030 hosts to trouble the podium in a couple of hours from now.

The athletes have been announced to the crowd in The Arena, which has more than a touch of a nightclub vibe around it... at 5.35pm on a Friday!

Warm-ups are under way. England and Scotland will start on the floor in the first rotation, which is going to be loud, Wales and Canada saddle up for the pommel horse first while Cyprus and Australia begin on the rings.

    So, what’s happened already today?

The men’s competition has been split into three sub divisions – the first competed this morning while the second was early this afternoon.

Gymnasts from England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Cyprus and Australia will be in action in the third and final division over the next three hours or so, with the team medals set to be handed out just before 21:00 BST.

The bar has been set in the team event, but not particularly high.

India amassed 208.550 points earlier, well clear of Bangladesh (161.350) and Singapore (151.950) with New Zealand the only other team to register a score (140.700).

Artistic gymnastics… one of the blue ribband events at any Games, and we get to enjoy it on day one.

The men are in action on this opening evening in The Arena, competing across six disciplines with a view to helping their team towards a medal and securing their own place in the individual finals.

They will compete on the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar with judge's scores based on difficulty and execution.

In the team event at least three of the nation’s gymnasts will compete on each of the apparatus. Should four take part then only the highest three scores will count towards the team’s overall score, if under three compete then they won't be eligible for the team title.

Strap in, this won’t be for the faint of heart.
