Sepp Straka starts his opening round with a par at the first. So what? I hear some of you cry.
Well, the big Austrian has now made 22 consecutive pars in Open Championship golf after making par on all 18 holes in his final round at Royal Portrush last year.
He started his run on the 16th in his third round at Portrush, finshing last year's event with 21 straight pars, to which he's added another at Birkdale - so let's see how long he can go!
He's gone 30 holes in The Open without making a bogey.

Fleetwood is disgusted with his approach from the fairway at the 10th. His ball is bullied by the wind in the sky and he comes up well short.
Out with the putter, his judgement of pace is sound but he's shoved it out to the right a bit and has a tricky wee seven-footer for par.
Misses it! Fleetwood's first dropped shot and he slips back to level par.
In the thick stuff off the tee, Jon Rahm muscles his second to the back of the green and takes two from there to secure his four, which is matched by Jordan Spieth.

Justin Rose was clinical for his first three holes. Then his approach play is where it is going wrong. He has just been really scrappy. When he is hitting his putts, he comes out of it straight away. His approach play is not dialled in.

Dan Brown, who is currently tied at the top of the leaderboard, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:
"It will be nice if it stays up there. I felt good. The last two-three months, I have been hitting the ball really well, but not been holing anything. Thankfully, I started holing some putts on the last nine to 10 holes.
"The eighth kick-started the day, but I would say the first seven holes were pretty boring to be honest. I struggle to adapt to life in America a little bit.
"I have swapped and changed putters a little bit. I have gone back to the original one that I have had for the last couple of years. Hopefully, it carries on working."

Bryson DeChambeau's mammoth tee shot pays dividends as he chips to three feet and then rolls in for a three. So far, so good for the two-time US Open winner.

It's been a disappointing day for Justin Rose so far and there are more problems for him on the 11th.
Rose goes long with his approach, he needs two attempts to find the green and two putts to find the cup.
The Englishman drops back to five over for the day - but he's got a 10-footer left for birdie on the par-three 12th to get one of those shots back.

Ryan Gerard is enjoying the early stages of his Open Championship debut.
The 26-year-old American's sole PGA Tour win came at the brilliantly named Barracuda Championship last year, an event which ran opposite to the Open at Royal Portrush.
He's in the big leagues now and taking advantage, with birdies at two, three and eight.

I think - and I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking this - that the PGA Championship should be a global competition held all around the world. Having 3 majors exclusively in America is too much. And anyway, don’t Ireland have their own Open Championship on the European tour?

After a one-under 69, Alex Fitzpatrick has been reflecting on the state of his game:
"I felt like I played a little better than what I scored. Hit a couple bad shots coming down the stretch, which was a little frustrating, especially not birdieing either of the par fives.
"My game is in a completely different spot than I was three years ago, and I feel like my golf the past three months shows that I can compete in big tournaments."

The Scots are turning up at Birkdale today.
After Bob MacIntyre's excellent three-under earlier, compatriot Jack McDonald has joined him, after just five holes.
The 33-year-old missed the cut on his only other Open appearance in 2024, but is in good shape so far here.

Tommy Fleetwood finds the narrow fairway at the par-four ninth but his approach favours the left-hand side of the green. He judges the pace of his 40-footer for birdie well and taps in for par and a bogey-free outward nine of 33.
Steady stuff from Tommy, and from Jon Rahm, who also reaches the turn with eight pars and a birdie.
Jordan Spieth is three shots worse off after that double bogey on the sixth. Still searching for his first birdie.

Robert MacIntyre, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after his three-under 67 opening round score: "Delighted. A very solid round of golf. Very disciplined and happy to save par on the 18th. Sometimes I laid myself too far back but had to accept it and deal with a longer shot in. I feel like it was a great job.
"Some of the putts shaved the hole early on, but that is golf. Delighted with the start. There is a low score [out there], plenty of chances. The problem is managing the ball and staying out of these bunkers. There is the potential of a low score, but I am not going to worry about that. I am in the place I want to be."

Great recovery. Tyrrell Hatton might have had a touch of luck in finding the path down the right of the ninth but he executes a lovely second shot on to the green and then tidies up with two putts for par.

The British Open is so named for a reason. Nah, not for me. Nothing against Irish golf whatsoever - I just don't get it.

On top of Republic of Ireland, time for a pan-Euro Open and also foray into the Far East, such as China, S-E Asia or Australasia. Golf is really global, especially in the Northern winter.
