Scottie Scheffler with the shot of the Championship already. He had to get the angle of attack so deeply. He managed it to absolute perfection, and he got it to run up on the front left of the green.

Tyrrell Hatton's ball is resting on a footprint on the sandy path to the right of the 13th.
But he plays a wonderful second shot that comes to a rest inside Scottie Scheffler's ball right on the front of the green.
Bryson DeChambeau also has work to do from a horrible stance, with the ball three foot above his feet on a bank in the rough but he's able to punt that down the fairway and then clip a chip into three feet.

A second bogey of the day for Tommy Fleetwood and second in three holes has he goes long over the green on the short 12th and that's always going to spell trouble.
He does play a lovely escape but unfortunately he can't follow it up by hitting his par saver from six feet - sliding it by the hole and he was up as soon as it left the blade.
Disappointing groasn ring out around the Brikdale crowd.

Alex Smalley is the outright leader!
After a beautiful dig into six feet at the par-three 15th, the American ignores the wind whipping at the bottom of his trousers to confidently roll in a left-to-righter.
He's the first man to reach five under, which was the leading mark after 18 holes here in 2017 (it was one under in much tougher conditions in 2008).

Tyrrell Hatton goes way right off the 13th tee. Looks like he's halfway to Ainsdale judging by that shot which disappears into the sand dunes.

The wind turned and the 13th allowed Justin Rose to get a nice iron dialled in.
Really nice to see him on the 13th, he held a beautiful long iron into the left-hand wind. It feels like he is building a bit of momentum.
He is experienced. He is 45 years old and he has played a lot of Opens. He knows he has to stay patient and stay calm, to try to salvage this round.

Lovely birdie for Jon Rahm on 11 thanks to another dart of a short iron into the green, again getting some action on the ball. He's been dazzling with his approach play so far, hitting every green in regulation.
If his putting was a bit more switched on he could be a couple of shots better off as he's rarely been in trouble.
Tommy Fleetwood has missed a couple of relatively easy approaches now, going for that sorn-off finish he's just left them off to the right and also short - but he gets up and down here with the putter from off the green for par.

That one slid back, but it was a positive effort from Bryson DeChambeau. He didn't get any help from Scottie Scheffler, who left it three-feet short.

That's close from Tyrrell Hatton on the par-three 12th. The Englishman was expecting a touch more turn on his ball as it rolled towards the cup from 22 feet.
His putt stays up though meaning it's a seventh straight par.
There are also pars for Scottie Scheffler, who completely misreads his birdie effort and Bryson DeChambeau.

There seems to be an unwritten social taboo about wearing golf shoes when visiting the Open as a spectator but I'd argue they are as essential as a hat and the sunnies on a day like today.
The ground is bone dry, with the dirt turning to sand in places, making many of the hills and mounds the fans are climbing and down to get a vantage point especially treacherous.
I've seen a few punters lose their footing already over the week so you have my permission to throw away that ignore the fashion faux pas and stick on the spikes.

Ohhh, Justin Rose. The Englishman has about 20 feet left for birdie at the 13th but he three-putts and drops another shot. He's back at five over now.
It's just not been his day today.
Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland is short of the green with his second shot but a nicely judged bump-and-run ends up within four feet and helps to save the Norwegian's par.

Talk about rolling back the years. The 2018 Open champion Francesco Molinari strolls into the clubhouse at three under after knocking in four birdies on the back nine.
The 43-year-old Italian has not finished inside the top 10 since then and has missed the cut in two of the previous three editions.

Courtesy of a really nicely constructed birdie at the far part of the golf course - the par 5 14th. The 29-year-old from New York coolly rolled it in.

Beautiful wedge shot out of a divot from Bryson DeChambeau. He controlled the spin and did everything he needed to do to look at a birdie chance.
DeChambeau had a difficult putt. It looked like it would snap from right to left. He maybe put too much pace into it.

The furthest was BDC from 11 feet. World number one Scheffler was inside six.
