How will 'firm and fast' Birkdale play?published at 07:13 BST 16 July

It seems like every Open when you were a kid was baking hot with burnt out fairways, but we don't seem to get too many these days.
Not this year though as Royal Birkdale is more brown than green and the fairways are running hot - meaning players have to do their own rollback this week and not hit driver off every tee.
Long irons can roll out miles and that brings the dastardly bunkers into play - you simply have to stay out of those this week.
The ground staff are watering the fairways the first couple of days to try and keep a hint of green in there, but will then let them go over the weekend - and that's the beauty of links golf, right?
Forged by nature is the tagline and the weather can make such a huge difference - this is just a completely different test than what players faced at Portrush last year.

'We're optimistic' - R&A on Open at Portmarnock
For the first time ever it looks like the Open Championship will be played outside of the United Kingdom, with Portmarnock Golf Club near Dublin set to stage the battle for the Claret Jug at some point soon.
R&A boss Mark Darbon said in his press conference at Birkdale that they were "pretty close" to being able to announce Portmarnock as a future host venue.
Portmarnock will make history, and also join the brilliant Royal Portrush as two Open venues on the island of Ireland - and it could see both Turnberry and Muirfield slip further down the pecking order.

Matthew Baldwin makes a par on his opening hole playing on his home course in the Open, but Belgian Thomas Detry goes one better by making an opening birdie thanks to a ripper of a drive.
Plenty of players will take an iron off the first tee but Detry got the driver out and gave it a lash 322 yards down onto the fairway, before flicking a wedge inside four feet and slotting home for a three.
Great start.

It's been a long time since there was an English winner of the Open Championship, and they don't come around too often.
Nick Faldo was the last English player to win the Claret Jug and that was some 34 years ago at Muirfield - and he won all three of his titles in Scotland.
So you have to go back all the way to 1969 when Tony Jacklin won at Royal Lytham to find an English winner on English soil.
In fact, that was the only English winner of the Open on an English course since 1947!
But with Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood all inside the top 10 in the world, Aaron Rai a recent major winner and Tyrrell Hatton in the field then there must be a great chance for a rare home winner this week.
So can the Claret Jug stay in England come Sunday?

Not sure if the organisers were feeling particularly cruel but there’s an Englishman in the first eight groups this morning.
The horseshoe grandstand at the first is completely full though, settling in for a long day.
First tee shot is 0635. Final putt will drop just before 2100. Are there any fans at Birkdale who will do the marathon day, in this heat too?

There are thousands of spectators through the gates already.
A nice antidote for sports fans on this gorgeous golfing coastline. A little slice of golfing paradise here in west Lancashire.
A course that has held more Open Championships than anywhere else in England – and it’s shimmering beneath an unforgiving summer sun already.
Weeks and weeks without meaningful rain have baked this golf course. It’s going to be firm, it’s going to be fast and any golf fan knows that means we’re in for a treat.

The first tee shot of the Open Championship is just brilliant, and if you ever get to the tournament you just have to get down there first thing to experience it.
The honour this year goes to Matthew Baldwin, a local player who is actually a member at Royal Birkdale so it's fantastic for him to be getting the 154th Open Championship up and running.
It's a truly wonderful setting, a calm, clear, sunny Southport morning, just a breeze creeping over the dunes and rippling the flags around the first tee grandstand.
Baldwin will not have felt first tee nerves like this before, but he crunches a driving iron and rips his ball down onto the fairway. He walks off with a proud smile with his job done.

Welcome golf fans to the best week of the year - it's the 154th Open Championship from the glorious Royal Birkdale.
The football may have disappointed last night but this week of golf certainly won't, with a baked out links course just outside Southport making for a magnificent setting for the final major of the year.
And can the likes of local hero Tommy Fleetwood, veteran Justin Rose or Matt Fitzpatrick make up for the Three Lions being knocked out of the World Cup by producing a rare English winner of the Claret Jug?
Rory McIlroy may have something to say about that, as might world number one and defending champion Scottie Scheffler, while Scotland's Robert MacIntyre knows his way around a links.
It will be a fast and fiery Open thanks to the recent heatwave so this is going to have a classic summer links look to it - but it will be a tough task navigating all the trouble.
And with our Sunday night now free stay with us as we find out who will be crowned Champion Golfer of the Year. It should be a fascinating contest.
