Too much power off the fifth tee from Bryson DeChambeau as he batters it to the left of the green.

This is playing as the second easiest hole today but he's made a meal of it as his chip onto the putting surface leaves him 20 feet.

He races his attempt five feet past too, but does convert for par.

Five straight pars for DeChambeau. Not making any inroads.

Sam Burns gets a nice break at the third when his tee shot bounces back into play - not sure if it was off an unsuspecting spectator or a mound - and into the much shorter rough left of the fairway.

But his second shot finds a greenside bunker - Ken Brown takes a look at the challenge that the sand traps at Birkdale pose in the video below.

Tommy Fleetwood crunches a fairway wood over the dunes and into the sixth green, and it's bang on line, almost hammering into the flagstick as it whistles past the hole.

It's still just about on the green, maybe just trickling off the back but that was a great strike. It's tough to hold this green as well with it playing downwind.

We've seen some awkward stances in and around the bunkers this week and Lucas Herbert comes unstuck with a visit to sand on the third.

Having to stand outside the trap, he fails to advance his ball out and it leads to a bogey.

An untidy five for Ludvig Aberg takes the Swede back to five under.

Fleetwood has taken centre stage at Birkdale all week and today there are thousands of fans following his every move.

This part of the course feels like a music festival, with the early birds bagging their spot in the pit to get close to the stage.

Fleetwood looks like a rock star. And he must feel like Liam Gallagher out here.

It reminds me of how the Oasis frontman described the experience of being idolised…

"While there's all this chaos going on around you. Not feeling the need to join the madness. You're just thinking, this is the best feeling in the world. Absolutely still."

A pint of water I hope Max. Important to stay hydrated in this heat.

Cameron Young opts for an iron off the tee at the 493-yard par-four 13th, but it chases nicely down the fairway.

From 209 yards, he strikes another pure approach but can't make the 28-footer and it's another par.

On to the par-five 14th he goes...

No sign of any nerves for Sam Burns as he chases a first major victory.

Perfect tee shot, approach ends up within five feet, birdie putt finds the cup.

Ryan Fox is staying in touch though! He finds the hole from 15 feet for a three of his own at the second.

Ryan Gerard and Kim Si-woo both take the direct route from the tee at the second but it fast becomes about saving par, rather than chasing a birdie, when they get closer to the green.

Tied eighth is the best either of these two have finished at a major and they are still feeling their way into the round on these first few holes.

I just took a straw poll in the crowd and for every one person supporting Bryson, there were four against him [after what happened on Friday].

I don't think there's love. I think he's damaged himself a bit. I winced. And everyone in the golfing fraternity winced.

But he manages the crowd brilliantly with all the low-fives for the fans.

We've just seen Tommy Fleetwood's terrific touch around the fifth green. A hole further back, Bryson DeChambeau matches him after going awry off the tee.

He has two feet to save par and plod on.

What judgement, what fabulous execution from Tommy Fleetwood.

Absolutely nerveless stuff.

That was smooth as silk.

Tommy Fleetwood takes the putter from long range just off the fifth green, and plays it wonderfully with it snaking across the putting surface and has every chance of dropping in.

It pulls up just to the left of the flag but that's a tap-in birdie and now Fleetwood is just three off the lead!

We should mention of course that Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen is only a shot behind as the Dane also makes a three here. He's playing beautifully in the circumstances.

He has missed two incredible opportunities. His putter was stone cold yesterday. And Friday and Thursday.

Nope, it's not happening for Scottie Scheffler today as he misses another birdie chance, this time just six feet on the ninth green.

Another poor effort and you can just see the shoulders slump of the world number one who probably knows that his chances are slipping away.

He's turned in 31, three under, but it should have been so much better.

Oh dear. Russell Henley, one of the best putters around, lips out from four feet on the 16th and it's no surprise to see the American trudge off the green with his head in his hands.

A bad time to make his first bogey of the day.

Fleetwood steers well clear of the jungle down the right though and just misses the green to the left - he's playing right down the length of the putting surface with his second though so that's a pretty good leave.
