Hibernian are quickly up the other end but Nathan Lowe cannot keep his shot down.

Rangers manager Derek McInnes: "I'm embarrassed with the performance.

"The only people who represented the club well tonight were my staff, the support staff and the preparation - we do so much right here to get the players ready and peak, peak condition to go and perform - and the supporters, who to a man were outstanding - getting behind the team, despite watching what we were watching.

"It wasn't a good performance by any stretch of the imagination. I'm not going to sit here and may excuses whatsoever.

"The responsibility is mine to make sure that we are better than what we served up tonight and we were miles short, miles short. We got what we deserved. I'm mortified by the performance."

It's been a decent 20 minutes from Hibs, they've looked good defensively.

They've managed the game really well, made good passes, had good possession and a few chances of their own.

Gent cannot make much of a corner cheaply given away by the hosts.

The first cross was decent, the second? Overhit and very welcome too for the Hibs defence.

Martin Boyle has had Hibernian's best effort so far, this shot deflected over.

It's a let off for Hibs.

It shows that when you give the ball away high up the pitch, you have to recover into your shape very quickly or you can be punished.

Momodou Sonko puts a dangerous low ball across the Hibernian box but there are no takers.

That certainly caused a bit of concern for the home fans.

Ten minutes in and Hibs have held their own so far, as they did in Belgium.

Can either of these teams make a breakthrough in this tensest of ties?

Martin Boyle is taken out by Tibe De Vlieger's heav and Hibernian have a free-kick but there's no punishment for the Gent player, even after VAR have a check.

Will this be the first Hibernian team to successfully negotiate European qualifying and reach the Conference League's league phase?

Now Hibs threaten and Martin Boyle's deflected shot wins a corner and gets the home crowd going.

Gent have the ball in the net early on but no goal.

Raphael Sallinger spilled the ball and Gent netted but the Hibs was fouled in the opinion of the referee.

Hibernian and Gent are up and running at Easter Road.

Hibernian head coach David Gray tells BBC Scotland: "Owen's not trained this week, picked up a calf issue last week and he's not recovered. Hopefully, it's not too serious and this has just come too soon.

"Josh Campbell had a bit of a sickness bug this afternoon, so he's out of the squad as well.

"Martin [Boyle] and Jamie [McGrath] both bring experience, they've played in a lot of big games, played in Europe as well. We always wanted to be more attacking at home as well.

"I just reminded the players that they have earned their right to be on this stage. We went toe-to-toe with a very good side last week but we've earned the right to have a go. It's up to them now to grab history."

One shot on target in 120 minutes. That tells a story about Rangers' threat.

When players are on the pitch and things aren't going well and they look around them for someone to grab the game by the scruff of the neck, to lead, there's no answers.

I could see Derek's frustration. He couldn't believe what he was watching. He tried numerous different things to bring about a better level of performance.

But they need better quality on the pitch - and they need a gameplan.

I think of Kaunas, Progres Niederkorn. That's up there with them.

Rangers had no style, no desire, no movement, no tackles, no shots, no control. They offered absolutely nothing over 120 minutes.

Surprisingly, I'm not that shocked - given what I've watched in the first few games of the season.

The questions are going to start coming Derek McInnes' way. Rangers played five different formations tonight and they offered nothing.

They had a week to prepare for this game. I don't know what they did. I didn't see how they were going to score. They got played through far too easy.

This is one of the worst results in Rangers' recent history.
