Both Bristol City and Walsall's team sheets had a new look to them but it was the Saddlers who took their chance to shine.
Aaron Pressley's second-half strike gave the visitors the lead and goalkeeper Jed Ward impressed to keep a relentless Robins side at bay.
Just one goal in it to see Walsall through but an exciting start to the competition nonetheless.
