After the first eight minutes when we thought the game was going exactly as we thought it would with Southampton applying a lot of pressure, but I think Colchester have dealt with everything that Southampton have thrown at them.

They've kept that really good shape of 5-4-1 and they've won the ball on few occasions high up.

It's got to be said that we've created the better chances and look the side that will score.

Colchester United can be very, very happy but not get complacent in the second half.

The last five minutes might have given Rotherham a little bit of hope that if we get the ball out into the wide areas, and get the full-backs joining in with the wingers whipping balls into the box you have got half a chance.

I was really worried for us in the first 20 minutes, it looked like West Brom could score every time they went forward.

There are little bits of the play that Alex Bruce will be pleased with, but even he can see that the three midfield players need to be tracking their runners, and if they don't we will be in big trouble and we will concede more goals.

A one-sided first-half comes to an end and Charlton go into the dressing rooms three goals clear.

There has been a huge gap, perhaps unsurprisingly, between the Championship and League Two sides.

Matty Godden got the Addicks off to a good start, curling in via the far post and they made it two goals in 90 seconds when Nathaniel Chalobah found Sonny Carey who slipped the ball past Joe Day into the corner of the net.

Tyreece Campbell scored the pick of the first-half goals with a peach of a curling effort from outside the box and Campbell was so close to making it four moments before half-time when he rattled the crossbar from a tight angle.

So close to four.

Tyreece Campbell dances one way, and then the other, before lashing a left-footed effort past Joe Day but it crashes off the top of the crossbar and goes out for a goal-kick.

Campbell has been magnificent in this first-half.

Colchester are steady and strong to go into the break goalless but Southampton are just missing out on that final third quality to spoil their fun.

The U's have offered up moments of real danger though and striker Bradley Ihionvien has twice been able to get shots off at the target, though keeper Daniel Peretz has been in the way each time.

The Saints keeper had to provide a triple save to keep the ball out of his net, while Southampton have seen plenty of possession and quality balls in but have been lacking any sign of a clinical finish.

This game feels like it's in Southampton's hands but they might not be the ones to win it if Colchester can sneak a goal and keep up this first half display.

West Brom have started this season like they mean business.

They have been at it from the first whistle and led through Jimmy-Jay Morgan's ingenious back heel from close range.

Albion doubled their lead through Harry Whitwell when the midfielder followed up Morgan's strike which was beaten out and then had a goal disallowed as Aune Heggebo was pulled up for offside.

Heggebo could have scored before the break, missing two good opportunities.

Rotherham have got a massive uphill task to make this a proper cup tie in the second period.

One minute added to this first half and it's the U's on the attack.

Almost 4-0 Charlton before half-time. And it would have been but for a great save by Joe Day.

Karlan Grant is in and bearing down on the Cheltenham goal but his effort across goal is very well turned around the corner by the Robins' keeper.

Colchester are enraged.

They believe they should be awarded a penalty for a handball just inside the box but the referee judges it to be them who have done the misdeed.

No VAR to settle the case.

Ryan Manning's free-kick is a lovely thing to behold but Taylor Harwood-Bellis fails to do much with his tame header.

Saints are turning up the quality but Tom Fellows' effort at goal flies high of the net to end the spell of possession.

Albion close to a third.

It's a complete mismatch at the back post and Aune Heggebo is head and shoulders above Ewan Otoo but his header is just wide of the near post.

At the other end, the ball is curled towards the back post but Paul Mullin is on the stretch and can't direct his header on target. A half-chance at the very best.

Rotherham look like they need a breather, and it is hard physically and mentally.

It is difficult as they are faster, stronger than you, and you just want to have some time on the ball to get a break and calm down.

The way West Brom are playing they are pressing and Rotherham don't get a chance.

Well that is what I was told, as I was a goalkeeper!

Tom Fellows does well to cut back to Saints team-mate Lewis Dobbin but he doesn't turn his body enough to bring his volley on target.

Colchester boss Danny Cowley must be ecstatic with how this first half is going.

Each time Southampton try and play out, the U's press feels threatening. But not only are they able to apply it, they get back to defend the Saints attack like lightning.

Even when Lewis Dobbin's shot breaks through, brand new stopper Thimothee Lo-Tutala is there to parry it away.

Southampton are just struggling to work Colchester out here and just get the movement up front and get in behind.

They haven't really got behind them. There's been a couple of times when Leo Scienza's taken the full-back on and got to the by-line but that's been it really.
