There was still a notably frosty reception for Julian Alvarez as his name was read out.

He gets his first start at home this season. The last time he scored for Atleti was last April.

Add that to the drama and speculation around the summer transfer, the only way to gain these Atleti supporters forgiveness is to do the talking on the pitch and score.

Kick-off is approaching and there's a fancy light show going on as the stadium announcer whips up the crowd.

Fireworks!? No, but then it is only the second game in the league phase of the Champions League, so probably a bit early for that level of razzmatazz.

If Lille get it right in the first half, they become a terrifying proposition for Arsenal.

I'm pleased to see Man Utd play three in midfield and three attacking players. Looks more solid. Also good to see Yoro and Heaven, who are the future of the club, getting a chance. I think we'll do well tonight and hopefully keep that structure for Leeds.

It will be interesting to see how Manchester United approach this tonight.

There is more energy in Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba than has existed before. In Youri Tielemans and Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United should be able to make more of their possession higher up the field.

Width from the full-back areas is essential. A first goal of the season for Marcus Rashford would be handy.

Thankfully no Mainoo tonight. His lack of pace, engine, and positional awareness are real drawbacks in the PL. He'd be more suited to a technical slower game, like in Italy.

  9. 'Big challenge for us but we're looking forward to it'published at 19:50 BST

Atletico Madrid v Manchester United (20:00 BST)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick speaking to the media before tonight's game starts, about pressure: "It's not pressure, it's what we do. It's why we're here, it's what we live for, it's part of the business. You're going to get some results that don't go your way and you've got to find a way to overcome that.

"Fantastic game for us tonight. It's a good opportunity for us to put on a good performance, try and get a good result in a tough place. So it's a big challenge for us but we're looking forward to it.

"It's a tough game. We know this stadium and this competition over the years and in the past at the old stadium. They’ve got a good history in this competition, we have to respect that in the sense of we have to be fully prepared and of course we are. It's a great game for us. We have to play well, we have to do a lot of things good but we are capable of winning for sure."

For all Manchester United's woes, it is still very very early in the season. It's time for Rashford to step up to the levels he showed early under Ten Haag and drag his boyhood club to some victories - no pressure!

  11. 'Baleba will make an impact'published at 19:47 BST

    Paul Robinson
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

In the short time Carlos Baleba was on the field at the weekend you could see what he is all about. He protects the back four, he turns defence into attack very quickly, he's comfortable with the ball, he carries the ball forward.

I do think he's going to be a very, very good signing for Manchester United. He's one of those signings that will make an impact as soon as he plays.

  13. Kane to beat Messi's total?published at 19:43 BST

Viking v Bayern Munich (20:00 BST)

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has scored 34 goals in 39 games in the Champions League since turning 30, which is now just one less than Lionel Messi scored in the competition in his 30s (35 goals in 48 appearances).

You'd fancy him to do that tonight.

Michael Carrick was asked about Diego Simeone’s legacy at Atletico Madrid and the time he has been afforded to build a lasting foundation, despite not every season delivering success.

Drawing comparisons with Sir Alex Ferguson, Mikel Arteta and Simeone, Carrick said: “They were all given time to build something. It doesn’t always take time, but to get to where you want to be, it’s going to take a bit of time to build that foundation.”

I’m gonna be very honest. I like this from Carrick. Nothing is really working right now and trying something new is the only way I think we are going to see what is best. It’s a risk but worth it! Nice to see Santos get play time as well!

  19. Ken is 'the soul of this football club'published at 19:29 BST

    Arsenal v Lille (20:00 BST)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking before the game starts tonight to reporters regarding the passing of Arsenal life president Ken Friar: “Very difficult because in life you come across special people and Ken is one of them. He’s an absolute legend and the soul of this football club. This stadium wouldn’t be built if it wasn’t for him. The legacy that he is leaving is immense and it’s very sad news.”

On changes made for the game: “We know the level of competition and the level of Lille. We made the changes because it was the best way for us to start the game with some issues that we had a few days. We want everyone to be on it."

On what he took from the win over Leeds Untied at the weekend: “The capacity to overcome difficult scenarios, especially when we arrive in the last 20 or 30 minutes. Better decision, better execution to hurt the opposition more and the rest is to keep the energy because it’s great."
