I am assuming that Arsenal changes are down to rotation. Good to see, I hope Arteta uses the full squad properly all the way through the season.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking before the game starts tonight to reporters regarding the passing of Arsenal life president Ken Friar: “Very difficult because in life you come across special people and Ken is one of them. He’s an absolute legend and the soul of this football club. This stadium wouldn’t be built if it wasn’t for him. The legacy that he is leaving is immense and it’s very sad news.”

On changes made for the game: “We know the level of competition and the level of Lille. We made the changes because it was the best way for us to start the game with some issues that we had a few days. We want everyone to be on it."

On what he took from the win over Leeds Untied at the weekend: “The capacity to overcome difficult scenarios, especially when we arrive in the last 20 or 30 minutes. Better decision, better execution to hurt the opposition more and the rest is to keep the energy because it’s great."

Feel for Merino, he was one of our most under-appreciated performers last season, and it was a big loss not having him 100% fit when last season’s UCL Final came around. Victim of a stacked squad, but great to see him start tonight.

    Manchester United

On the latest episode of The Devils' Advocate podcast, co-hosts Gaz Drinkwater and Joe McGrath discuss Manchester United's upcoming games and what results could mean for Michael Carrick position.

McGrath said: "I think it will be an absolute battering [against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League]. I think Carrick will get away with whatever result might happen in midweek.

"Things will start to get a bit nasty if Leeds United at the weekend doesn't go Manchester United's way."

Drinkwater added: "If we were fans of any other football club, this position that we're in now - worst start in 40 years - we'd be keeping an eye on our phones today [thinking]: 'It could come out today, he might get sacked today.'

"But we're not, we're Manchester United fans. Manchester United do give their managers a bit of time, which I think is a good thing on the whole.

"If we were to lose the next two, we're checking our phones on Monday."

Arsenal were so close to winning the Champions League last season, falling on penalties to Paris St-Germain in the final.

Can they go one better this time? It's early days but victory tonight would make it two from two in Europe's top flight.

Coming into the season as defending Premier League champions, Arsenal were looking to make a statement signing to make their rivals take notice.

They did not bring in the attacker they wanted but Bruno Guimaraes looks like he could be that key arrival to help Mikel Arteta's men build on their success.

The 28-year-old midfielder is a 'win-now' signing in the peak years of his career.

He responded well to a disappointing performance in the defeat by Brighton, where he made his full league debut.

The Brazil international has now scored two goals that have helped his side to valuable points and justified the decision to spend big on him, even if the Gunners are inundated with top quality options in midfield.

Arteta said: "He wasn't at that level against Brighton, and this is the level for Arsenal. Every week, every game, every minute, every action, you have to be at that level.

"That's what we have to demand. This is what I demand of myself and I'm going to demand the same with the players. If we do that, he will raise the standards and we will be a better team."

This is exactly why Man Utd are where they are with a team like this away, it’s a joke and nothing but a bottom 10 finish in Europe and at home.

Barcelona have scored 80 goals in 27 Champions League matches since Hansi Flick took charge, at an average of 2.96 per game. This is the highest goals-per-game ratio for any club with 20+ games under a specific manager in the competition (since 1992-93).

    Expect goals, then.

Looking at the Man Utd lineup, could that be Fernandes up front as a false 9? I'm surprised he hasn't played there more often to be honest, with the likes of Mbuemo, Cunha and Rashford running beyond him from out wide. Let him be a free, creative forward.

Barcelona haven't had much fun in the Champions League since they last won it in 2015.

They faced a premature exit at the quarter-final stage to Atletico Madrid last year but summer additions mean they're now better equipped to take on Europe's elite competition.

An opening day 5-1 win over Feyenoord has set them nicely on their way but now they must face Galatasaray in Turkey.

"In a final, anything can happen so I think we did really well. Of course, if I had another penalty I'm going to be there to take it and I think my team-mates helped me a lot after this," said Gabriel.

"Of course I was sad. I don't want to miss a penalty, but I've learned from this and if I have another opportunity I'm there to take it."

Manchester United have two major issues - one in possession and one out of it.

In possession, they are a crossing team, but when your striker is [Bryan] Mbeumo on Saturday, or [Matheus] Cunha previously, and they have left [Benjamin] Sesko on the bench, it bemuses me a little bit.

Out of possession, I don't buy into the players not wanting it enough, but I think the way they press is completely wrong. They leave themselves open, they leave the number six with way too much time on the ball.

You can't leave the best players free to control possession.

  20. Carrick not feeling the pressurepublished at 18:45 BST

Atletico Madrid v Manchester United (20:00 BST)

It has been a poor start to the season for Manchester United with two wins from their eight games so far in all competitions.

They won their Champions League opener but their domestic form has been disappointing with just one win in six Premier League games leaving them 13th in the table.

Asked if he felt under pressure, Michael Carrick said: "It depends how you define pressure. There's our own expectation. We know what we're capable of doing as a team, what we expect as a group and as a football club. That comes from us.

"I certainly don't look outside or elsewhere of what it should look like. I know fine well what it should look like. I've felt it and I've felt the ups and I've felt the downs. I don't feel the pressure from that at all."
