Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon has vowed to be more selfish ahead of facing Aston Villa.

The England forward is preparing for the Champions League clash on Tuesday following his summer move from Newcastle in a deal worth more than £69m.

Gordon has previously played Villa with Everton and Newcastle in the Premier League, scoring in the Magpies' 3-0 win on Boxing Day in 2024.

"They're one of the most physical teams in the league. They've got some great players," he said.

"Certain things can motivate me more than others but I try to remain the same. I try to remain consistent with my motivation. So the fact they're English doesn't make it more motivating.

"They have some great players, I know they all have had a great run as of late, so it's going to be a difficult game.

"They're the type of team that regardless of the game, they're always in the game, they wait for a moment. They seem to always be ready for any type of game, so we know it will be a tough challenge but we're excited for what's to come."

  4. 'Barcelona are favourites in this competition'published at 19:47 GMT 3 November

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to TNT Sports: "We are excited. Today is the highest level in football. We are ready, but of course we know that it is going to be a difficult match.

"[We] want to understand how we can try to compete, how we can exploit our capacity, our skills through the players and being organised."

On Barcelona: "Barcelona they are very competitive and favourites in this competition, so they have six points and are now playing at home after defeating PSG. They must win against us, so today, is a very good test to try to identify how we can compete when the level is high, and the opponent need to compete against us strongly."

    Villarreal v Paris St-Germain (20:00 GMT)

Defending champions Paris St-Germain were involved in a thriller in their last Champions League game, beating Barcelona 4-2 at Parc des Princes.

That victory came at a cost, though, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffering an ACL that has ruled him out for the rest of the season, while Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos also limped off and haven't played since.

PSG face Spanish opposition again tonight as they visit Villarreal aiming to stretch their unbeaten run in the competition to 14 games, which would match the record for a French side, set by Lyon between December 2004 and March 2006.

Villarreal have won three of their four games against French sides in European competition but since Luis Enrique took charge, PSG have gone unbeaten in their four Champions League away games against Spanish teams, winning three of them, so something will have to give.

The visitors topped the standings after winning each of their first three games, whereas Villarreal have won one and lost two so far.

Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini is best known in this country for the nine years he spent turning Atalanta into Serie A contenders and European regulars.

Remarkably though, prior to his time at Atalanta, he was sacked after just five games in charge of Inter Milan.

His tenure included four defeats and a draw, so he understands the difficulties Michael Carrick is going through at Manchester United just now.

“I don't really know why Manchester United are experiencing the difficulties they are at the moment,” Gasperini told me last night.

“But what I do know is that Manchester United is made up of very strong players. Sometimes you go through a hard time, but then you get back on track and you start getting good results.

“I hope that is what happens to Manchester United after tomorrow obviously.”

Away from the English sides, perhaps the most intriguing game of the evening comes in Spain as two of last season's Champions League semi-finalists meet as Atletico Madrid host Bayern Munich.

Both sides will be eyeing a top eight finish so could do with a win after middling starts to their European campaigns.

Diego Simeone's Atletico are on four points from three games. Having lost at Liverpool in their opening match, they responded with a 2-0 win over Manchester United but were held to a 1-1 draw at Stuttgart last time out.

Meanwhile, Bayern have followed up their 5-0 thrashing of Bodo/Glimt with two draws. A 2-2 at home to Arsenal last time out came after dropping points more surprisingly in 3-3 draw at Norwegian champions Viking.

  8. Michael Carrick vows to repay Man Utd supportpublished at 19:43 GMT 3 November

Manchester United are on their worst run of form since 1988-89.

They have not gone 10 games without a win in a single season since 1977-78.

There is huge pressure on Michael Carrick, but the United head coach is vowing his team will turn the situation around.

“We know it’s been difficult recently,” he admits in his programme notes for this evening’s Champions League clash with Roma at Old Trafford. “But we have to keep looking forward.

“We have a responsibility to represent you and everything Manchester United stands for.

“We are determined to repay your incredible support, and I know that, as a group, we are more than capable of producing the performances you deserve.”

Manchester United defender Ayden Heaven, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Really excited. First start here at Old Trafford in the Champions League, [it's] everyone's dream really. I can't wait to get started."

On making his Champions League debut in the defeat by Atletico Madrid: "It was a tough game, probably one of the toughest we'll play. They played well, credit to them and we can take that into this game. We learned a lot from that game, so we're prepared."

On conceding in the opening minutes in their last two European games: "We have to start fast. It wasn't good enough conceding early on, so we've worked on it. We're going to do as much as we can to prevent it happening again."

On creating a good atmosphere tonight: "It's not been a very good start. The fans know that as well. It's down to us to put that right today. We're ready."

On Ayden Heaven being put up for the pre-match interview by Man Utd:

I think it's really poor, if I'm being completely honest. I think you're asking a youngster to shoulder everything for the senior players when the senior players should be stepping up.

I remember when I was Blackburn captain stepping up for Ryan Nelson when he was injured and when we lost a game, I just said I'll do it because I was captain of the football club at the time.

To put a youngster up is poor, whether that is from Michael Carrick, the press officer, whoever it might be. I think you have to protect the younger players.

  12. 'We want to challenge ourselves against good teams'published at 19:38 GMT 3 November

Manchester United v Roma (20:00 GMT)

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Micheal Carrick speaking before the game: "It's a big game, and it's what you expect in this competition. [Roma] have had a really good start to the season and credit to them for that, they're a really good team. It's why we want to be in this competition, we want to challenge ourselves against good teams, and try to come out on top. It's a big night for us."

On leaving out defender Lisandro Martinez: "We have to pick a team. We have a good squad, we have decisons to make. We have changed one or two in recent weeks, so we made the decision to go with this team tonight."

On Kobbie Mainoo and Carlos Baleba starting together for the first time: "We have some really good midfielders, and different combinations provide different strengths. Andrey [Santos] and Carlos [Baleba] have played recently together. Kobbie is back fit, and we just felt it was a good stage to put him back in. You'd like to think that they compliment each other with the attributes they both have, and I'm looking forward to seeing them tonight."

On what he expects from Roma: "They play man to man and press allover the pitch you never really get time on the ball. Their play never really settles. [Roma] are really good at what they do."

On summoning the spirit of 20 year's ago when Man Utd beat Roma 7-1: "That's a long time ago. I think tonight is a whole new Man Utd. It's the next opportunity for us to win a football match, we are looking to do that, we need to do that, and tonight would be a good one [for us to win]."

  14. Mainoo 'very grateful' for Carrick's 'trust'published at 19:34 GMT 3 November

Manchester United v Roma (20:00 GMT)

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo says he is "very grateful" to head coach Michael Carrick for the faith shown in him, despite the club's recent struggles.

Mainoo was cast aside under previous United boss Ruben Amorim, subsequently pushing for a loan move to Italian side Napoli in January, but came back into the fold when Carrick first took caretaker charge later that month.

The 21-year-old England midfielder started every game he was available for under Carrick last season, and has five Premier league starts so far in 2026-27.

"I'm very grateful to the boss for putting the trust in me as soon as he came in, putting that belief in me and giving me all the advice that he has, knowing that he's been a player for this club and knows the history of this club and what it takes to win," said Mainoo.

"I take those words to heart and try to apply them every day in training and in games."

Emiliano Buendía is on the longest scoring streak of any Aston Villa player in major European competition, netting in each of his last four appearances (four goals).

He has faced Barcelona on two previous occasions in his career, losing 6-0 on both occasions (0-6 as a Getafe player in April 2015 and March 2016).

Finally Kobbie Mainoo and Carlos Baleba start together at the heart of Manchester United's midfield.

This was always the plan but Baleba was injured when he completed his £70m move from Brighton and then Mainoo picked up a muscle issue just as his new team-mate made his debut from the substitutes' bench.

Mainoo came off the bench at Chelsea on Saturday and is fit enough to start tonight.

Michael Carrick needs the pair to hit it off.

Barcelona will pose a huge goal threat to Aston Villa having scored 56 goals in 14 games this season, with former Leeds United forward Raphinha netting 15 and Lamine Yamal 10.

"We haven't been talking about anyone in particular," Villa captain John McGinn said. They have world-class players in the starting XI and on the bench.

"We respect the players who can hurt us, but we have our own players to cause damage to Barcelona."

I think Aston Villa can mix it with the European elite. I think they have shown that over the last few times they have been in the Champions League. The games against PSG and Bayern Munich they more than competed - they won those games.

They are a difficult team to play against and Unai Emery has got a new, younger 2.0 and I think he wants to show that off and I think he wants to show how far this team can go and it's very, very exciting times for Villa fans.

John McGinn admits Aston Villa's rise to the Champions League has allowed him to fulfil his boyhood dreams.

Before Tuesday's game in Barcelona, the Scotland international has revealed his ambition for Villa to continue to face the world's best clubs.

Villa captain McGinn has only been to the Nou Camp once on holiday but is now ready to face World Cup winner Lamine Yamal on the pitch.

"I used to go on holiday in Fuerteventura and Salou and I was here on a stadium tour the day Ricardo Quaresma signed for Barcelona," said the midfielder. "I've never been since but I'm excited to represent Aston Villa on the big stage.

"I'm 32 years old and the trajectory of this club is allowing me to dream in the same way I did since I was nine, 10, 11.

"What the club is trying to do now is make this journey and make it a yearly experience to compete with the best in England and Europe.

"It's a pleasure to be on this journey with the supporters. I am sure they will enjoy today and tomorrow, but we will only enjoy the experience if we win three points."
