Pakistan have to get on with it now don't they? If they don't go at 11 or 10 an over they're not going to get there.

  2. Pak 232-6published at 43 overs

Will Jacks completes a decent spell of 1-45, spoiled somewhat by back-to-back fours from the end over his final over.

The first is nudged down to fine leg as Jacks drifts on to Faheem's pads, before thumping the next down the ground.

  3. Pak 222-6published at 42 overs

    A stunner.

Faheem Ashraf takes a bit of the pressure off his batting partner with a picture-perfect cover drive for four as Jamie Overton overpitches.

Overton is comfortably England's best bowler in ODIs right now. Really taking on the Plunkett role like a duck to water.

  5. Pak 215-6published at 41 overs

Faheem Ashraf joins Arafat Minhas in the middle now, who needs to take responsibility if Pakistan are going to post something remotely competitive.

But Will Jacks gives very little away in his over, conceding just two as England continue to claw back control.

Really impressive from Overton today who has been disciplined with his length. Nawaz looked unsure with the first few balls in the over. The stumps were exposed and it was perfectly executed.

That feels like the biggest wicket of the lot because of how Nawaz was playing and England can now breathe a little bit. Nawaz was the danger there that could have tugged Pakistan up to 300 but that now looks unlikely without him there.

  7. Pak 211-6published at 40 overs

Cracking over from Overton, just two runs and the wicket from it.

That wicket has shifted the momentum of the innings. Pakistan are having to rebuild again now, with 10 overs to go.

Jamie Overton gets the big breakthrough for England!

A brilliant set-up, going back of a length for the first four balls before surprising Hasan Nawaz with a perfect yorker to clatter into middle stump.

Nawaz departs for a fine 79.

They've played Curran really well there because they know he's going to mix his pace. They've been really controlled in the way they've waited for him to err in his length and he was punished.

Eeek, a horror over for Sam Curran.

Three fours to Arafat Minhas - two through the covers, and one is inches away from being a six over mid-wicket.

There's a wide in there too, and England are under a bit of pressure.

    Hello!

Having been watchful in the partnership with Nawaz so far, Arafat decides to kick on. He whacks Jamie Overton straight back past long-on for four.

These two are building nicely here...

England would have loved that wicket because it does feel like Pakistan are building a bit of power. If Pakistan can lay the foundation, Nawaz will be key to that.

How have I only just noticed that?!

Regardless of the village cricket vibes, though, Cox does brilliantly to leap full stretch to his left to save the last ball of the over. There's an edge, Sam Curran appeals but it dropped just short of Cox's glove.

It's certainly been a good partnership between Nawaz and Arafat, putting pressure back on England.

  16. Pak 187-5published at 36 overs

    Oh, lovely shot.

A fraction too short from Will Jacks and Hasan Nawaz rocks on to the back foot to punch it beautifully through the covers.

The left-handed Arafat plays a similar shot later in the over, but picks out the sweeper. A productive over for Pakistan, nine from it.

  17. How's stat?!published at 11:40 BST 20 October

Since the rule change, there has been a slight shift back towards the effectiveness of seam bowlers in overs 35+ of ODI cricket, with more swing on offer to seam bowlers and a marginally reduced economy rate:

    Since rule change (2nd July 2025) - 0.74° | Econ 6.5

    From 2023 to rule change - 0.64° | Econ 7.1

It's Sam Curran who is tasked with trying to find some reverse swing for now. He delivers his usual array of slower, slower balls but both Nawaz and Arafat are able to negotiate them comfortably.

  19. Postpublished at 11:36 BST 20 October

Seeing as we've reached the 34-over mark, it's time for England to select which ball they're going to use for the remainder of the innings.

Conveniently, my colleague Matthew Henry has done an excellent deep dive into the subject, which you can read here.

  20. Pak 173-5published at 34 overs

Jamie Overton continues to hammer away at a good length, drawing a few plays and misses, but the Pakistan pair comfortably take three from the over.
