    Liyanage c Buttler b Overton 4 (SL 100-5)

    Soft.

Not a great shot from Janith Liyanage, guiding a rising delivery from Jamie Overton straight to Jos Buttler with a tentative cut, as though he was conducting catching practice.

Sri Lanka go five down and are in a fair bit of trouble now.

  2. SL 99-4published at 23 overs

Good work from Jamie Overton there.

Janith Liyanage guides Will Jacks down to third and the hulking England seamer does well to cut off the boundary.

The Sri Lankan batters take three.

Overton is really effective in the middle overs, bowls a hard ball and goes for fewer runs than you'd expect. The 2027 World Cup equivalent of 2019-era Liam Plunkett for England?

Shot of the day for me so far!

Kamindu Mendis hit that with ease, if Overton is going to bowl half-volleys, there is every chance the batter will be getting hit for four over his head.

    That's nicely struck.

Jamie Overton over-pitches and Kusal Mendis dispatches the England seamer over his head for four.

  6. How stat?published at 18:36 BST 22 September

Going back to the previous over, that was Overton's 10th wicket in the middle overs (11-40) since the start of 2025 in ODIs - only Adil Rashid (32 wickets) has taken more in this timeframe for England.

Sri Lanka need to keep calm, don't need to do anything need rash. With these four wickets, it feels like England are ahead in this game.

  8. SL 87-4published at 21 overs

New batter Janith Liyanage immediately takes a single to backward point, Kusal Mendis returns him to the strike and Will Jacks finishes with three dot balls to the new batter.

Those two quick wickets have changed the momentum of the match a tad...

    Asalanka lbw b Jacks 1 (SL 85-4)

All reds - looked out, was out.

Charith Asalanka's trip to the crease lasts all of three balls.

England on top now, with Sri Lanka still needing 181.

Thanks Ma... no time for that, the umpire's finger is up!

Charith Asalanka is struck on the back leg sweeping Will Jacks.

They're going to review, but this doesn't look hopeful.

  11. SL 85-3published at 20 overs

    Required run-rate: 6.03

Charith Asalanka is the new batter. Mike Peter is replacing me. This could go the distance.

    Rathnayake c Banton b Overton 13 (SL 84-3)

Sri Lanka's Pavan RathnayakeImage source, Getty Images

This is a much better catch than it'll get the credit for. Pavan Rathnayake skims a drive no more than a two feet above the turf and Tom Banton just drops to his right to pluck the ball and take the catch.

    England chip away again.

  14. SL 84-2published at 19.3 overs

Too wide this time from Jamie Overton and he knows it. Pavan Pathnayake climbs in.

Will Jacks is the kind of bowler who will get more bounce, and this is where both of these batters need to be more proactive and put more pressure on England.

  16. SL 79-2published at 19 overs

    Target 266

England are sending every throw from the deep in on the bounce in an attempt to rough these balls up. It's the oldest trick in the book. It'll make them softer and potentially aim the reverse swing later.

WinViz is still just with Sri Lanka but England look comfortable with where they are.

Feels like not having Adil Rashid will be the difference here.

Harry Brook's next move is to turn to Will Jacks...

  19. SL 76-2published at 18 overs

Jamie Overton hurries Kusal Mendis with a bouncer that is only just taken from in front of the grille. England have been pretty accurate on the whole, Overton no different.

I think Sri Lanka will be able to work Jamie Overton around a bit more.
