Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 32-0published at 7 overs

    Duckett 15 (23), Gay 17 (19)

That's more like it from Muhammad Abbas, beating Emilio Gay's outside edge. Three dot balls to start the over.

But then, Gay opens up and picks up three behind point. Well played.

Ben Duckett finishes the over with yet another two.

Interesting switch for Khurram Shahzad to go over the wicket to the left-handers. Just two of his 17 Test wickets against left-handers have come from over the wicket.

How does Duckett keep getting selected? He has no discipline, cannot leave anything outside of off stump and is virtually a walking wicket.

    Mark P, Liverpool

I think a Test average of 40 probably helps, Mark. Given the problems England have had trying to find openers since Andrew Strauss retired 14 years ago, I doubt they'll be looking to discard someone with Duckett's record in a hurry.

  4. Eng 27-0published at 6 overs

"Two!" comes the shout from Ben Duckett, picking a gap through mid-wicket... it's his third of the over and his sixth of the innings to move onto 13.

England are trucking along nicely after bowling Pakistan out for 171.

Pakistan today have felt like England do when they go to Australia.

Beautifully played from Emilio Gay, he's so still when he hits the ball. We were talking about the lack of pace from Abbas.

Beautiful drive, but not a great delivery.

  7. Eng 21-0published at 5 overs

Very tidy from Emilio Gay, flicking through square for four. To my right, Sam and the boss, Higgy, make noises of approval.

He follows it with another boundary, driving through the covers. He played a near-identical shot a couple of overs ago. Sam and Higgy don't react.

Muhammad Abbas' line and length a trifle askew.

I think Joe Root has got a heck of a job on his hands this summer. Lots of talented players, but not a "team" yet, I think.

  9. Eng 13-0published at 4 overs

Azan Awais is full of beans at short leg. He gets down low to block a cut from Emilio Gay and throws down the stumps, forcing the opener to dart back into the crease. England sneak a single as the ball pings away into a vacant area.

Two singles are followed four dots, Ben Duckett wisely leaving the final ball of the over.

Muhammad Abbas is one of those bowlers who can pick up a few early ones, especially against this rather fragile England top order.

  11. Eng 11-0published at 3 overs

It's early days, I know, but Muhammad Rizwan is resisting the urge to stand up to the stumps despite England's well-documented struggles.

Muhammad Abbas hits the seam and beats the bat of Emilio Gay. His next delivery cramps the Durham man for room.

Gay has the last laugh, driving through the covers for four.

There was a hint of confusion there between Emilio Gay and Ben Duckett about the running.

We've seen that a few times this summer.

Muhammad Abbas with the new ball (under 30 overs old) in his Test career:

    • v right-handers - 34 wickets, 27.0 average
    • v left-handers - 27 wickets, 22.1 average
  14. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Emilio Gay gets up and running at the second time of asking, playing into the covers and urging Ben Duckett through for a quick single.

Duckett guides one just out of reach of a lunging Azan Awais under the helmet at short leg, adding another two to his collection.

All six of Emilio Gay's dismissals in Test cricket so far have moved away from him off the pitch - he averages just 10 against balls that nip away.

  16. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

The opening over is book-ended by twos.

Khurram Shahzad will share the new ball.

It looked very, very close. Abbas would feel that he's been denied a chance there.

That was a perfect delivery to a left hander really. Ben Duckett survived by millimetres.

Pakistan will be a bit miffed.

  19. Not out - Duckett on twopublished at 0.3 overs

Oooh, a slice of luck for Ben Duckett! It's umpire's call, kissing the top of the bails.

Muhammad Abbas is not impressed. Muhammad Rizwan, who had his own umpire's call frustration in Pakistan's innings, throws his arms in the air.

The ball does cut back at Ben Duckett. That's dangerous.

    It's not a bad shout.
