Summary

Have your say on England men this winter

  1. SL 250-3published at 34 overs

    Target 430

Back-to-back fours off Gus Atkinson, and Rathnayake moves to 98.

Can he hold his nerve after Avishka Fernando fell for 97 earlier?

  2. Not outpublished at 33.2 overs

Ahh, it came off his shoulder.

Unfortunate for Jordan Cox, who covered a lot of ground diving to his right.

  3. SL reviewpublished at 33.2 overs

What a catch! Or is it?

Jordan Cox leaps one-handed and scoops up the ball just before it hits the ground. It's given out on the field but Dasun Shanaka reviews.

There's been some great striking from Sri Lanka which is putting England under pressure.

  5. SL 240-3published at 33 overs

    Target 430

England's seamers have been pretty inconsistent here. It's a good job they have 430 to defend.

Sam Curran drifts down the leg side and Shanaka helps it on its way for four.

  6. 6 runs

    SL 234-3published at 32 overs

Dasun Shanaka continues his flying start, taking the attack to Liam Dawson.

He plays a glorious lofted drive over cover, before slamming a six over mid-wicket.

  7. SL 223-3published at 31 overs

    Target 430

Sri Lanka are actually quite far ahead of where England were at the same stage of their innings (190-2) which shows just how remarkable Brook and Jacks' finish was.

  8. How stat?!published at 15:33 BST 22 October

This series marks a return for Dasun Shanaka to the ODI fold, with his last game before this series coming in January 2024.

He is arguably the perfect batter for Sri Lanka in this situation, coming off the back of some blistering T20 form in the Caribbean Premier League where he averaged 56 at a strike rate of 194 from eight innings.

  9. SL 217-3published at 30 overs

    Target 430

Jamie Overton starts well, with just one run conceded from his first four balls, but then offers a bit of width to Rathnayake who slashes for four.

20 overs to go, and Sri Lanka need a further 213 to win.

  10. 6 runs

    SL 212-3published at 29 overs

    And again!

It's another filthy short ball on leg stump and Shanaka cashes in, repeating Rathnayake's shot from earlier in the over.

Big over for Sri Lanka - 18 from it.

Josh Tongue's been quite expensive here. Just struggling to acclimatise to the surface.

  12. SL 205-3published at 28.4 overs

What a shot! Pavan Rathnayake remains unflustered despite the departure of Avishka.

Josh Tongue bangs it in short and it's a lovely pick-up, flicked over fine leg for six.

Dasun Shanaka then gets his first boundary with a nicely controlled dab down to deep third.

An enterprising 97 from Avishka Fernando comes to an end. He scored heavily on both sides of the wicket against pace and spin, but favoured behind square on the legside the most, where 34 of his runs were scored.

That wicket will have really knocked the stuffing out of Sri Lanka because they'll have to build again and they need to win this or they'll have played two, lost two.

  15. SL 193-3published at 28 overs

A productive over from England and Overton, although Jordan Cox - who is thankfully back to keeping in long sleeves today - fumbles behind the stumps after a short ball flies up above his head.

What a shame. A really good innings there. Avishka really dominated the partnership and got Sri Lanka off to a flier. England at last have broken the partnership and will hope they can realign to winning this match with ease.

    Oh no!

Heartbreak for Avishka Fernando, who is distraught as he falls three runs short of a century. He deserved it, having played beautifully, but gets a leading edge up to Jamie Overton, who takes a simple catch in his follow through.

England finally break what was a very good partnership.

  18. 6 runs

    SL 188-2published at 27 overs

    On the charge!

Rathnayake slashes a short, wide ball from Josh Tongue over point for four before absolutely nailing the next over mid-wicket for a huge six.

The pitch is still a belter to bat on. Avishka Fernando, meanwhile, keeps the strike on 97...

Sri Lanka are just about keeping themselves within touching distance. At the moment they're in the game and England need to figure out how they're going to break this partnership.

It would still take a miracle for Sri Lanka to chase these runs.

  20. SL 178-2published at 26 overs

    Target 430

    Cheers, Mike.

Another expensive over from Will Jacks, nine coming from it as Rathnayake nails another reverse sweep.

It's been a fine partnership between these two, worth 154 so far.
