    It's tidy enough stuff from Ali Usman but both batters are well set and take a pair of singles apiece from the over.

    Just 42 overs in the field and Pakistan look out of ideas. Worrying for the tourists.

    The dropped catch started it and this is a pretty dreadful over from Khurram Shahzad.

    Far too short, the ball is sitting up nicely and Jordan Cox can pretty much pick his spot.

    Another firm pull shot brings the second boundary of the over before a lovely back-foot punch adds a third.

    I think it surprised Jordan Cox because of how wide it was. He just sort of checks it in front of his chest, back to Khurram Shahzad, who clearly wasn't ready for that one.

    Big chance for Pakistan!

    It's a half-tracker from Khurram Shahzad on his return to the attack but Jordan Cox can't decide whether to cut or pull - and ends up dinking it back to the bowler.

    Khurram gets both hands to it but can't hold on. That really should have been taken.

    And, of course, the next ball is thrashed for four by Cox. It's always the way.

    Pakistan are going to have to find a way to extract a wicket. Root and Cox are looking very comfortable out there.

    The potency is just not there for Pakistan.

    Ooh, I wasn't expecting that - turn for Ali Usman!

    The left-arm spinner flights his second ball nicely to Joe Root, it's full, bringing the batter forward and then turns past the bat. Well bowled.

    Root brushes it off quickly, though, and paddle-sweeps fine for two as England take a first-innings lead.

    Pakistan are just carrying on from yesterday. They haven’t been consistently threatening. I can count on one hand how many challenging deliveries have been bowled.

    Change of bowling after drinks and we're going to see some spin for the first time today. Ali Usman is into the attack and Joe Root is forward to defend his first ball.

    It's very much been England's day. I've been the most impressed with Jordan Cox in just his second game. It's as if he's played as many as Joe Root. With Root, we just expect him to play with this much class.

    England are coming along nicely, now looking to add onto their lead with eight wickets in hand.

  11. Pakistan will be bitterly disappointed with how things have gone so far today.

    They've beaten the bat on a few occasions, especially early on, but in conditions that couldn't be much better for the seamers, they've not managed to add to their two wickets.

    That was Jordan Cox's maiden Test half-century in his second Test. It was brought up in 78 balls, with 10 fours.

    That was Joe Root's 109th 50-plus score in Test cricket. It was brought up in 95 balls with eight fours.

    He drills a straight drive back past the bowler and it reaches the boundary in a flash.

    Scores are level and the players will take drinks. Good session for England so far, a disappointing one for Pakistan.

    Back-to-back half-centuries for Jordan Cox and Joe Root. Moving in sync at the moment, it's been a brilliant partnership, deflating the opposition.

    Another beautifully balanced shot, big dive on the boundary from the fielder but he just ended up pushing it for four.

    It's getting hard to praise Joe Root, every time it middles it, you expect it to go all the way.

    It's well-timed clip through the leg side from the England skipper, there's a despairing dive from the fielder in the deep, who gets a hand to it but ends up fumbling the ball onto the boundary cushion anyway.

    A lot of effort for no reward.

    Meanwhile, Root continues on his merry way. The half-century brought up from 95 balls.

    That will do Jordan Cox's confidence a world of good. He's looked relaxed, assured, just nonchalantly glanced that one away to fine leg. He's looked very much at home in this England squad. He's doing his case no harm here.

    Pakistan are going for a leg slip ploy. It feels like they are trying to bowl a lot straighter which is a good plan.
