The sun is absolutely cracking the flags here now at Edgbaston. The afternoon looks ideal for batting at the moment.

England still have quite a bit of work to do to get victory wrapped up inside three days with Shan Masood (83 not out) and Babar Azam (unbeaten on 26) looking in good touch.

I'm off to get some lunch. Here's Matthew Henry to take you through the afternoon session.

Gus Atkinson out before the rest of his England team-mates limbering up with bowling coach Tim Southee. He's wicketless so far in this Test so understandably will want to be right on it this afternoon.

  4. No northern Ashes Test a result of 2023 switchpublished at 13:47 BST 11 September

A cricket news story from BBC chief cricket correspondent Stephan Shemilt about the venues chosen for the men's Ashes next year you might have missed.

The absence of Test in the north of England in 2027 is a direct result of the decision to switch a match from Hampshire to Headingley for Australia's last visit in 2023.

Next year, Hampshire's home in Southampton will host an Ashes Test for the first time, with both Old Trafford in Manchester and Headingley in Leeds missing out.

So far, so good from Pakistan. Today has been a very good show with the bat. They've shown a lot of promise, gutsy stuff as well and Babar Azam is off to a very, very confident start.

Shan Masood is nearing 100 and there'll be celebrations for sure because it's a huge breakthrough for Pakistan.

That was a very good session for Pakistan. They've lost only the one wicket, so they're still in the game and still fighting. They've England something to think about. If you want 3-0, you're going to have to work for it.

Azan Awais scored his third half-century in Tests in just his seventh match and his partnership with Shan Masood was worth 125 in 24.9 overs. They came together at 0 for 2, that's 55 times a team have been at 0 for 2 and that's the second-highest third wicket stand and was Pakistan's first century stand of the series.

It was the perfect decision by Joe Root to review and get the spinner on. Dan Lawrence got a wicket to add to his 65. His summer is gonna go underrated, he’s had a brilliant summer.

Just the one wicket in the morning session so far after Azan Awais feathered one down the leg side.

Joe Root had the wise sense to review it after it was initially given not out.

This is one of those rare times when sure most of us are hoping the opposition has success and racks up a big total? No one wants three day Tests all the time and the team needs to learn to deal with real pressure. I hope Pakistan bat all day!

Pakistan have played with a little bit more commitment. They've just played better Test cricket this morning with the bat. It's been good to see on the one hand, but another part of me just laments that they took so long to find this rhythm.

    That's lunch.

Some tremendous fighting spirit from Pakistan.

  13. Pak 184-3published at 39.3 overs

Babar Azam cashes in on a half volley from Harry Brook and thumps it through the point/cover region for four.

No-nonsense strokeplay from the Pakistan skipper.

Doff my cap on that one, Chambo.

It is Harry Brook and he strikes Shan Masood on the pad and appeals wildly - it's all a bit theatrical, though, and Pakistan pick up a leg bye.

I wonder how the contingent of Pakistan cricket fans accumulated in UAE feel about the Freds; apparently the people in Dubai don't like the Flintstones, but the people in Abu Dhabi do! (I'll get my coat as well).

  17. Pak 177-3published at 39 overs

Ollie Robinson hits Babar Azam on the pad with the second ball of his latest over, turns and appeals, only for umpire Paul Reiffel to signal a no-ball.

Harry Brook is limbering up... A bit of right-arm filth just before lunch?

Josh Tongue's bowled nine overs, with at least one boundary in all nine of them. He's going at 5.2 runs per over in this series, he's picked up 17 wickets averaging 15 with a strike-rate of 17, but the economy rate was the highest of an England bowler currently who's bowled 30 or more overs in a Test series.

He might have saved three runs there umpire Reiffel! It was hit so firmly that the umpire couldn't get out of the way.
