    Not much seam bowled in what you would think would be ideal seam bowling conditions at Hove.

    Jack Carson already has bowled five overs for 19 runs in just the 20 overs of this third innings.

    Hat-trick Henry Crocombe has been replaced by Sean Hunt and first ball his gentle loosener is driven beautifully by Josh Thomas through the covers for four.

    Ricardo Vasconcelos charges down the track at Matt Parkinson and launches the spinner over the long-on rope for a maximum.

    He moves on to 37 and has passed 700 runs for the summer.

    It's the only scoring shot of Parkinson's over, however.

    Michael Booth gets some movement away and Joe Clarke hangs his bat out. A rare play and miss.

    He looks to the darkening skies and then to the umpires.

    The light meter stays in the pocket for now.

    Tom Bailey overtakes Ben Walkden as the second highest scorer of the match so far after Keaton Jennings' 55 at the top.

    A lovely driven four off top wicket-taker of last year Tom Taylor to get to 29*.

    Ethan Bamber still asking a few questions out there wth a ball that's almost 60 overs old, but Lyndon James plays out a maiden.

    Michael Booth replaces Jordan Thompson in the gathering gloom. Thank goodness for floodlights.

    This has to count as a chance, as sharp as it is.

    Ricardo Vasconcelos turns Matt Parkinson straight to Ben Compton under the lid at short leg who can't hold on to a very sharp low chance by his boot.

    Vasconcelos rubs salt into the wound with a one-bounce four over extra cover to move to 30*.

    And that's that.

    Indian spinner Rahul Chahar bowls Essex number 11 Sam Cook to finish with figures of 6-80.

    That's some fightback from the Surrey bowlers. They took Essex's last seven wickets for 61.

    Surrey will start their second innings 96 behind.

    Joe Clarke clips Jordan Thompson off his pads and good running brings him a couple to move within four of his third ton of the season.

    And there it is!

    A straight drive down the ground gives him his 16th boundary and brings up three figures from 169 balls. A 28th career first-class century.

    This has been some knock in less than ideal batting conditions. And in a big match, too.

    Ricardo Vasconcelos punches gloriously off the back foot to the cover boundary to bring the Northants deficit under 300.

    Grant Stewart responds with a snorter which finds the edge and needs a sprawling stop from Zak Crawley in the slips.

    This is getting silly now.

    17.2 overs into this innings and the umpires are already leaving the field to get a new used ball, they should last longer than this, neither batter has even hit a six and the outfield is far lusher than the previous three months of the season have seen.

    A longer delay than necessary not helping the aim to get 32.4 more overs in this evening!

    Matt Parkinson getting some real grip and turn but despite an attacking field Ricardo Vasconcelos answers with a brilliant sweep for four to the square leg boundary.

    Grant Stewart will replace Matt Milnes at the other end.

    Matthew Waite will eventually get to finish his over then, two balls remaining.

    A good delivery from Jordan Thompson but Lyndon James plays it wth soft hands and it's down to the third man boundary for four.

    That brings up the fifty partnership for the sixth wicket, off 93 balls, and the 200 for Notts.

    A misfield allows James a second boundary of the over and takes him to 29.

    A good hand from the all-rounder in his first game back from a side strain picked up in the One-Day Cup.

    Runs pretty hard to come by for Northants.

    36 have come from the opening 13 overs, and 24 of those have been boundaries, most of them streaky.

    First change for Kent is Keith Dudgeon stepping aside for Matt Parkinson to have a twirl.

    He's after a third ton of the season having fallen five short of the mark at the Oval last week.
