    Prediction - Wardley

  2. A different side to Wardley?published at 22:33 BST 17 October

Fabio Wardley is one of the easiest boxers to deal with during fight week.

Relaxed, articulate and intelligent, he understands the media game and always has something interesting to say. He has the personality and backstory to become a genuine crossover star.

But I've noticed a slightly more serious edge to him this week. The usual humour is still there, but he knows what's at stake.

Another punishing defeat by Daniel Dubois would make the road back to a world title difficult.

And after so many gruelling contests, how many more wars can he afford?

    Dubois v Wardley 2

If Fabio Wardley lands the knockout tonight, chances are it will come from a hook. But for Daniel Dubois, he has a little more variety but favours a hard straight.

  9. 'I feel relaxed'published at 22:27 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

Fabio Wardley, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I feel relaxed. All the hard work has been done. We have ticked off all of the long weeks of training and all the hard bits. Now, it’s just fine-tuning all the details and ticking it off with a win."

  10. 'He's very cool, calm, collected, Fabio'published at 22:26 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

    Richie Woodhall
Former boxing world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

You've got a window here of four to five rounds, Fabio. So let's roll in the dice. You've got a window of four or five rounds where Daniel is a little bit vulnerable, because he's a bit vulnerable mentally in terms of sometimes he's just, he lapses in concentration.

You've got a four or five-round window here to knock this fella out. And you've got to go for it. But devil's advocate, that's a big risk. Because if you haven't knocked him out after four rounds, you've still got eight rounds left and you've put a load into it. It's a massive risk.

But you know what? Looking at him all this week, the way he's been acting, Fabio, I think that's totally in his mind. He's very cool, calm and collected. And I think he knows what he's got to do. And like I say, it might be a six-round window, but no more than five or six rounds, that's going to be his chance.

  11. Dubois' stunning resumepublished at 22:24 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

Daniel Dubois has a resume most boxers would dream of.

The two-time world champion is the only man to beat Filip Hrgovic in the pro game. He knocked Anthony Joshua out and is the only fighter with victory over Fabio Wardley.

  13. 'This rematch has almost slipped under the radar'published at 22:22 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

    Steve Bunce
    Boxing expert on BBC Sport

Great rematches rarely quite capture the magic of the original.

The second Chris Eubank v Nigel Benn fight was a tremendous occasion, but it couldn't match their first meeting. Carl Froch and George Groves attracted 80,000 people to their rematch, yet their first fight had greater intensity and drama.

Perhaps that's why this rematch has almost slipped under the radar.

But Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois, in contrast to Fury and Joshua, are showing everybody how it should be done. We are living in terrific times for British heavyweight boxing.

We went 20 years, between 1966 and 1986, without a world heavyweight title fight taking place in Britain. We now have the third on British soil this year.

It might not live up to the drama of the first fight, but my understanding is that there won't be a spare seat inside the O2 Arena.

  14. A golden ticket to boxing's biggest names?published at 22:21 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

The WBO heavyweight title is on the line but the opportunities beyond tonight could be even bigger.

Promoter Frank Warren has suggested the winner of Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley could face whoever comes through December's blockbuster between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

That could mean a lucrative all-British unification fight in 2027.

There are other options, too, with Agit Kabayel holding the WBC belt and Filip Hrgovic the IBF title.

The heavyweight division is opening up following Oleksandr Usyk's decision to relinquish his belts. Tonight's winner could be perfectly positioned to take advantage.

  16. What happened in the first fight?published at 22:19 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

The first fight at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena had almost everything - knockdowns, momentum shifts, heavy exchanges and a remarkable comeback.

Fabio Wardley made a sensational start when he dropped Daniel Dubois twice, but the fight swung as Dubois recovered and eventually forced an 11th-round stoppage.

It became increasingly uncomfortable to watch as Wardley fought on despite a badly damaged nose and one eye being swollen shut, with doctors checking him twice at ringside before allowing the contest to continue.

Former world champion Carl Frampton described Wardley as the "bravest man he'd ever seen", but said the referee or his corner should have intervened before the 10th, while Darren Barker called for the fight to be stopped to protect Wardley.

I worry for Wardley. The man would never give up. Dubois took the knee when his eye was done. That was a smart move - you've got a fractured eye socket you're not winning so tap out. Hoping for a good fight but also a safe fight too.

    George

I'm predicting another win for Dubois. Wardley is an absolute warrior and won't make it easy, but Dubois has been in the ring with the best in the heavyweight division and is arguably the number two in the heavyweight division now.

  18. 'It's like schoolboy stuff'published at 22:15 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

    Richie Woodhall
Former boxing world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I watched the whole fight again last night. And several times in the contest, Fabio could have finished Daniel off.

But what he did wrong, in terms of once he got him going in that first and that third round, you watch it.

He walks forward. His hands are so low. It's like schoolboy stuff. He's got no fear. Thinking he's going to just knock the guy out. He gets caught with silly shots that he shouldn't have.

And, he's a little bit erratic in trying to knock the guy out. So he'll learn from all that. And he'll have to.

In terms of what he's got to do differently as well, he's got to take away Daniel's jab. He's got to move his head a lot more. He's got to slip. He's got to block. He's got to parry. He's got to take away that jab. If he doesn't, then he's in trouble.

  19. Dubois on Fury v Joshuapublished at 22:14 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

Daniel Dubois isn't a man for giving predictions with Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury fast approaching but he did share an opinion or two on the fight.

"Let's just see them get in the ring now. I'm thinking about my fight now. It doesn't seem like it has that edge to it like if it happened years ago," Dubois told BBC Sport.

"They missed the fire and edge but I'm sure it will be a great fight."

  20. 'Strange position to be in'published at 22:13 BST 17 October

    Dubois v Wardley 2

    Carl Frampton
Retired world champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I have been thinking about the mentality of both fighters going into this.

I put myself in Daniel’s position because he was on the deck a couple of times in that last fight, because it was a convincing enough win for him in my opinion and he won relatively comfortably after the two knockdowns, but that’s a strange position to be in as someone who everybody just expects to win.

I hated that in my career, you fight someone and somebody just expects you to show up and win. It’s a horrible position to be in because you are worried about the expectation and letting people down. So, that’s the sort of position that Daniel is in at the moment. Fabio is coming in as the underdog, which he probably doesn’t mind. He likes that.
