Swansea City responded to the heaviest defeat of Vitor Matos' reign in spectacular style as they hammered Blackburn Rovers 4-0 at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Stephen Eustaquio, Joseph Opoku and Filip Lissah scored first-half goals as Swansea turned the tables following last weekend's shock 5-0 reverse at Queens Park Rangers.

Swansea secured their joint-biggest victory under Matos when Ross Stewart scored the goal of the day after the break.

Blackburn had arrived in Wales on the back of four victories in their past six games, but were taken apart by a Swansea side who appeared determined to make amends after back-to-back defeats.

Victory means Swansea are second in the Championship, while Rovers drop to 13th having slumped to their heaviest defeat since April 2024.

Swansea needed only 11 minutes to break the deadlock, with Eustaquio on hand to tap into an empty net after Opoku did the hard work by beating Harry Pickering on the outside before rolling the ball across the face.

The second goal arrived when Tom Atcheson cut out Stephen Welsh's through ball but only succeeded in teeing up Opoku, who took a touch before rolling a shot past the helpless Balazs Toth and into the bottom corner.

The chances kept coming for Swansea, with Welsh's fine diagonal pass allowing Lissah to get in behind before his low shot proved too powerful for Toth despite the goalkeeper's touch.

It was academy product Lissah's first senior goal for Swansea, and Stewart - who was preferred to Adam Idah and Zan Vipotnik up front - marked his first start since arriving from Southampton in the summer by getting off the mark in a Swans shirt.

After Eom Jisung's clever free-kick sent him running into the penalty area, the Scotland striker unleashed a fierce left-footed drive which flashed inside Toth's near post and put an end to any slim chance of a Rovers revival.

Analysis: Swans take the plaudits on a grim day for Rovers

Tony Mowbray had suggested Blackburn could "almost have a free hit" as they took on a Swansea side who have been surprise pacesetters in the early stages of this Championship campaign.

Rovers have turned heads with their form, too, but it was Swansea who earned the plaudits here as they put the struggles of the past fortnight to one side in emphatic fashion.

The hosts' football in the first half was as good as anything they have produced this season, with Matos' players stroking the ball around with a blend of tempo and quality which was all too much for Blackburn.

Rovers, meanwhile, were dreadful before the break and never really threatened to get back into the contest despite a slight improvement in the second period.

Blackburn's threat was minimal, though Todd Cantwell might have changed the story of the contest when he lashed over the top with the scoreline at 1-0.

Substitute Augustus Kargbo then drilled narrowly off target late on as Swansea held on for a sixth clean sheet of the season.

'We got the response' - reaction

Swansea head coach Vitor Matos:

"A really good response I would say. A good game, more than the result itself was the way we did it.

"The way we played in the first half was really nice to see – the will, the desire, the concentration, the quality, the belief.

"We got the response. We were not the worst team in the world last weekend. We are not the best team now but somehow we are improving and we will keep improving."

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray:

"We got it wrong and suffered for it against a very good team. My frustration comes from preparing for a week to play the number one team in the league for high pressing and then not carrying out what we'd worked on.

"We shouldn't have been trying to play nice football around our box against a high-press team. Maybe my messages to the players weren't strong enough.

"The best version of Blackburn Rovers might have come here and given them a good game, but we didn't do that."
