Burnley were looking for a first home win of the season
Burnley were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Portsmouth in Fabio Celestini's first game in charge and saw their wait for a victory at Turf Moor extended to 22 games.
Despite creating a number of opportunities and dominating possession, the Clarets could not make anything pay.
Former Basel boss Celestini replaced Nicky Hayen this week and his side missed an opportunity to climb out of the Championship relegation zone.
Portsmouth lacked cutting edge but extended their unbeaten league run to five games.
Both side made a pensive start to the game, but Portsmouth thought they had taken the lead on 12 minutes.
Marlon Pack finished well after Zak Swanson's free-kick was cleared, but Chelsea loanee Ryan Kavuma-McQueen was penalised for a foul on the goalkeeper.
Five minutes later, Andreas Hountondji headed over before seeing a low cross clears as the hosts looked to impose themselves.
Marcus Edwards somehow missed at the back post from a yard out following a corner before Hountondji forced a save from Nicolas Schmid in the Pompey goal.
Edwards was starting to turn the screw and fired goalwards moments later, but it was deflected wide.
After the break, the home side continued to probe. Portsmouth survived again when they cleared before Jamie Vardy could apply the finishing touch to Reo Hetate's cross.
The visitors were struggling to make an impact in attack. Abu Kamara went close with a curling effort, but it sailed over the bar as Pompey failed to register a shot on target.
But Burnley could not find the killer moment either. Jayden Banel's cross found Largie Ramazani but he failed to hit the target.
John Mousinho's Portsmouth will ultimately be the happier side with the result with a fourth clean sheet from 13 games this season.
The fans were incredible - Celestini
Burnley manager Fabio Celestini speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire: "It is a great feeling to be at Turf Moor, part of English football, traditional football in this incredible stadium.
"It is my birthday, three points would be a perfect present. But it was a perfect birthday because the fans were incredible with me.
"It was a solid performance. I know these games can be very difficult and the team can be fragile. We fought for 95 minutes and I saw a good spirit, a good dynamic.
"That is the first step but not enough. We tried to give what we had to win and it was not possible."

It was a good point - Mousinho
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho speaking to BBC Radio Solent: "I think it is a really good point.
"Burnley have not won at Turf Moor in over a year, there is a jubilation at the new manager coming in. They are very difficult days to deal with as an away team.
"As a marker they've got two England internationals in there [Kyle Walker and Jamie Vardy]. They are a very good side regardless of what has happened in the last few months.
"We weren't at it in the first half. We got a bit lucky, but we were better in the second half.
"The difference between the sides was they created more in the final third; on a day like that you take the point and move on."
