Scott Twine scored his fourth goal of the season
Scott Twine scored a stoppage-time winner for Bristol City as Michael Skubala's side came from behind to stun Bolton at Toughsheet Community Stadium.
Eight days on from a bruising 5-1 defeat here at the hands of league leaders Middlesbrough, Bolton fans were put through the wringer again.
And this one will have hurt every bit as much given they led 2-1 with six minutes of normal time to go, only for second-half substitutes Sam Bell and Twine to deliver the sucker punch.
The Robins were good value for the win having led a thoroughly entertaining contest early through Dom Ballard, before Josh Sheehan and Sam Dalby put Bolton temporarily in the driving seat.
Victory for Skubala's side arrested a frustrating period for City who were without a win in October with their last three-pointer in the middle of September, while it also gave their manager a very welcome 44th birthday present.
They fully deserved at least a draw from a match which was end-to-end throughout, both sides hit the woodwork and Bolton's Jack Bonham was the busier of the two keepers, producing several good saves in the second half.
Bolton had defended like statues for Ballard's opener, the forward knocking in his fourth goal of the campaign unmarked from six yards out after Jason Knight's cross from the right.
But Bolton hit back through Sheehan's 25-yard effort and Dalby, who deflected Atsuki Ito's left-foot shot past Bradley Collins in the Bristol City goal.
With six minutes left, and six minutes after coming on, Bell equalised, knocking in Cameron Pring's cross from the left.
Three minutes into stoppage time a beautiful crossfield pass from Knight picked out Jed Wallace galloping into space on the right. His cutback was tucked away by Twine to earn a fifth win of the season for the Robins.
We didn't take the chance to kill it off - Schumacher
Bolton manager Steven Schumacher speaking to BBC Radio Manchester:
"We're disappointed obviously. I felt it was a game that we definitely should win or not lose because for 80-85 minutes of that game we were in complete control of it.
"We were the better team even when they took the lead. We responded really well and got back in control and got back in front. We should have had a goal to kill it off and didn't take it.
"I think it was a big turning point when Chris Forino went off [with cramp].
"We became a bit ragged after we had to make the changes in the back line and the game became a bit more stretched and they have got good players and they punish you."
Schumacher: 'We won’t overreact'
An incredible comeback - Skubala
Robins manager Michael Skubala speaking to BBC Radio Bristol:
"An incredible comeback. I have just said to them in there the character of the guys is amazing.
"It is an excellent away win and it is never easy to win on the road but we've created some big chances. I really enjoyed the changes and the way they impacted the game.
"When we went down to 2-1 we had to weather a bit [of pressure]. It felt like they had a corner after corner.
"I thought if we make some really attacking changes at that point we are fast on transition and they want to keep the ball and moving it round slowly, we'll nick it and then we can get off.
"As the game developed we looked more and more threatening. We have been working hard in training on taking our chances and today we have taken three good goals from open play."
Skubala: "It's an excellent away win"
