Hard to envisage two teams going into a match in more contrasting runs of form.

Table-topping Middlesbrough are unbeaten in their past 10 league games, while Charlton are winless in their past nine.

Free-scoring Boro hammered Bolton 5-1 last time out and their 27 goals in their opening 12 matches is their most at this stage of a season since 1959-60 (30).

The Addicks badly need to pull out of the tailspin that has seen them skitter down the table since winning their first three games.

Nathan Jones' men did win 1-0 in this fixture last season so can look back on recent success on Teesside but this looks like a tall order.

  3. Surprise packages meet in south Walespublished at 14:55 GMT 31 October

    Swansea v Blackburn (15:00 GMT)

Successive defeats have sullied Swansea's super start to the season.

Last Saturday's 5-0 shellacking at QPR will certainly have stung but the Swans still start the day in second place.

They boast a fine recent record against Blackburn, with five wins in their past six.

Rovers have also started the campaign better than most would have expected given the off-field issues at the club.

In striker Andri Gudjohnsen, son of former Chelsea and Barcelona man Eidur, they boast the league's most clinical finisher. His double in the 2-0 win over Wrexham last week means he has scored eight goals from just 16 shots.

  4. East End battle to be best of the Westspublished at 14:54 GMT 31 October

West Ham v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

It's a huge game in the jostle for automatic promotion places as West Brom head to the London Stadium to face West Ham.

The now fifth-placed Hammers could go top with a win, and other results going their way, but Albion themselves could go second, lying just a point behind the Irons at present, in seventh.

The hosts will be desperate to overcome their habit of starting games slowly as they bid to recover from last weekend's 3-2 home defeat to Southampton.

The Baggies also have a bad habit of their own, they have conceded first in their past six games, though they have earned the second most points coming from behind in the top four tiers this season with 11 - seven in their past three matches after the 1-1 draw at Preston last time out.

    Should be a cracker!

  5. Bolton hoping to bounce back versus Robinspublished at 14:53 GMT 31 October

Bolton v Bristol City (15:00 GMT)

Bolton's heavy 5-1 defeat to table-topping Middlesbrough last Friday saw head coach Steven Schumacher admit for the first time this season his side had been completely outplayed.

Wanderers have made a decent start to life back in the second tier following promotion via the play-offs in May, sitting 18th and six points above the drop zone, with Schumacher saying on Thursday that he will not change his side's approach which brought them success last season and become a more defensive outfit.

For Bristol City, it is more of the same old story. The Robins sit in mid-table in Michael Skubala's first season at Ashton Gate, five points off the play-off places before this afternoon's action.

Despite investing in well-regarded strikers Lorent Tolaj and Dom Ballard in the summer, City have netted just five goals from open play in the Championship so far this season - the fewest of any side in the division.

This is the first league meeting between the two sides since January 2019 in which Kasey Palmer scored the winner in a 2-1 victory for City.

    Wolves v Cardiff (15:00 GMT)

    Media caption,

Cesar Peixoto on Wolves' position in the Championship and reasons for their injuries.

You may have noticed, football fans can be pretty unforgiving at times.

After relegation from the Premier League and with new boss Cesar Peixoto probably still needing sat-nav to find his away around the city after his June arrival, being fourth in the Championship does not feel like a disaster....unless you speak to the Molineux faithful.

Chants of 'you don't know what you're doing' echoed around the ground as Peixoto's side laboured to a 1-0 win over Watford last weekend.

Injuries have not helped Wolves in their bid for an immediate return to the top flight but victory over Cardiff today may keep the critics at bay for now.

The Bluebirds' have adjusted to life back in the Championship well enough - helped by the impressive form of six-goal forward Jack Moylan.

They just need to add an away win to go alongside their unbeaten home record - three points at Molineux might make Cesar feel a fair few people have got it in for him...

  7. Will Swansea deliver response against Rovers?published at 14:51 GMT 31 October

    Swansea v Blackburn (15:00 GMT)

    Gareth Vincent
BBC Sport Wales at the Swansea.com Stadium

Swansea City have spent this week recovering from the shock of their 5-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers last Saturday.

That was a result - and performance - that nobody in the Swansea camp saw coming.

Vitor Matos says "honest conversations" have taken place as the Swans look to deliver a response against Tony Mowbray's in-form Blackburn Rovers side.

Mowbray, meanwhile, has suggested his players can "almost have a free hit" against one of the division's early pacesetters, but privately he might be wondering if Blackburn are playing Swansea at a good time.

  8. Limping Lions seek improvement against dozing Derbypublished at 14:49 GMT 31 October

    Millwall v Derby (15:00 GMT)

    Media caption,

Derby County head coach John Eustace speaks ahead of Saturday's trip to The Den.

These two might wish they could start the season again.

After last season's near-miss, Millwall were more active than normal in the transfer window and, opening the campaign with successive victories gave rise to hope of a repeat tilt at promotion.

Just two wins from their past 10 games has rather dampened expectation, not helped by a fairly lengthy injury list.

Mind you, it could be worse for The Lions - they could be Derby.

The Rams are stuck on the runway still waiting for lift off.

No-one has scored fewer than their 10 goals in the Championship, they are yet to win at home and only Preston (2) have taken fewer than Derby's three points across their past six games.

On the plus side, five of their seven points have come on their travels and boss John Eustace moved to add more experience to his side this week with the signing of former Norwich defender Shane Duffy.

West Ham v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

Jarrod Bowen puffs out his cheeks in frustrationImage source, Shutterstock

West Ham's habit of starting slow was the subject of a team meeting this week, Irons captain Jarrod Bowen has revealed.

The Hammers have fallen behind in the first half of nine of their 15 matches in all competitions this season and boss Nuno Espirito Santo spoke to the players ahead of the visit of Albion stressing the important of starting faster.

Bowen wrote in today's matchday programme: "We are all eager to bounce back from last Saturday's frustrating defeat.

"We started the game badly and ultimately, despite playing really well after falling 2-0 down, gave ourselves too much to do."

He added: "We know how much talent we have got in our squad. We know we can't afford to start games slowly and (Nuno) sat us down and talked about that this week.

"We know there is expectation and a lot of people saying we should be top of the league... but we need to do our talking on the pitch, what people say doesn't matter if we don't perform."

  10. A Hammer Horror on Halloween?published at 14:46 GMT 31 October

West Ham v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

    Alex Hoad
BBC Sport England at the London Stadium

London Stadium pitch on a sunny day as the players warm up

Interesting vibes around the London Stadium this afternoon.

The sun is out, as are a smattering of Halloween costumes, but there's a sense of quiet foreboding, which has nothing to do with the calendar and more to do with the fact the Hammers are winless in their past three games here and have earned only 10 points from six at home in the league.

The absence of Konstantinos Mavropanos will be a blow for the hosts in both boxes but after starting 11 of the Irons' 12 league games Manor Solomon is dropped in favour of Edvin Austbo, who has impressed in cameos off the bench.

West Brom might see this as a free-hit, the pressure is pretty much all on the hosts and that might make Albion especially dangerous as they have shown immense resolve to snatch seven points from losing positions in their past three games and don't seem to know when they are beat.

  11. Celestini aims for perfect start against Pompeypublished at 14:44 GMT 31 October

    Burnley v Portsmouth (15:00 GMT)

    Fabio CelestiniImage source, Shutterstock

As has been well documented, it hasn't exactly been home comforts recently at Turf Moor for Burnley.

A once fortress has now become somewhat of a playground for away players and supporters alike. The Clarets have now set an unwanted English football record, not winning a league game at home in over a year.

378 days have lapsed since their last home success - a 2-0 win over Leeds United in October 2025 in the Premier League.

Last weekend's 4-1 humbling by recently-promoted Lincoln City last weekend was the straw that broke the camel's back as, straight after the match, head coach Nicky Hayen was relieved of his duties and on Wednesday he was replaced by new boss Fabio Celestini who has a huge task on his hands if he is to drag an underperforming and confidence-shot Clarets side out of trouble.

His first match in charge comes against Portsmouth whom have picked up some good form since their South Coast derby defeat to 10-man Southampton earlier this month.

John Mousinho's men have picked up 10 points from a possible 12 since that disappointing Sunday lunchtime at St Mary's, including a come-from-behind 2-1 win against Millwall last time out, which helped lift Pompey up into the top half of the Championship table.

    Riverside Stadium

Kim Hellberg's Middlesbrough have gone through the first quarter of the Championship campaign like an express train and sit top of the tree two points clear of Swansea in second place.

After last season's play-off drama and heartache it was quite clear that Boro mean business this time around. Some fantastic summer recruitment has seen the Teesside outfit simply blow teams away in certain games this season.

A trip to Bolton last Friday was a prime example of how clinical and how efficient "HellBall" is looking this term. Obviously we have all been talking about Will Lankshear and his goals have been a key part of the Boro success story but let me also highlight their new goalkeeper Radek Vitek who has been super strong, calm and cool in goal and emits supreme confidence to his defenders in front of him.

Nathan Jones' Charlton Athletic arrive here today off the back of a poor run and look set to be the next team to feel the force of the Middlesbrough Promotion Express Train - be warned though the Addicks won on their last trip to the Riverside back in March and the home side's last win against today's opposition in front of their own fans was back in December 2019.

Let's see what happens with the Boro today - I think we are in for another great game - I really do.

    Derek Payne
Former Watford midfielder on BBC Three Counties Radio

When you haven't won for a long time away from home I think psychology comes into it, but the supporters and anyone connected to the club don't want to hear excuses.

You won't get a better chance of changing that when you're 2-0 up against a side who haven't been in great form themselves this season and you have to wonder what this will do to the players morale.

Once you make little mistakes against a team your on top of, it just gives them a little lift. We're looking for excuses but it this division things like that gave them a lift.

Complacency let Norwich back in the game for me.

A fantastic away performance at a really difficult place to come. Burnley came here and lost 4-1 last week.

We have a number nine in August Priske who is looking good and we look like a top eight team.

Two goals for August Priske and three points for Birmingham City, who are, for now, second in the table.

Priske's first goal had the away side in front at the break and he then grabbed his second before the hour-mark.

Sub Tom Bayliss quickly got Lincoln back in it but they never really threatened an equaliser before Alex Cochrane's deflected effort ended the game as a contest.

That was more like it in the second half. We came out with a bit more purpose. Even 2-0 down we had nothing to lose. It was absolutely superb.

We deserved to win the game. It was probably day and night from the first and second halves.

Technically we were making the wrong decisions. The full-backs were higher and Watford were able to attack those spaces. It was a much better second half and Philippe Clement will be very pleased.
