It was a fantastic performance last week

It's now a platform to build from and they need to make sure it was not a one-off performance.

Last week was a stark contrast from the Six Nations.

Ashley Beck has probably given them the confidence, and now they've got the skill sets. Six weeks training together is a long time, it's evident that they've improved.

  6. A one-hit wonder or a sign of things to come?published at 14:56 BST 26 September

    BBC One Wales commentator

Wales produced their best performance in a long time against South Africa, and the result was arguably even more significant than it might have appeared.

Much of our commentary focused on explaining the level of the opposition. South Africa's women are not the equivalent of their all-conquering men, but they are a rapidly developing side who arguably went into the match as favourites. The manner of Wales' victory, therefore, was hugely encouraging.

The same context is important ahead of the USA game. The Americans are a very good side, as they demonstrated by roaring back against Ireland, and will provide another significant test of Wales' progress.

The question for Wales is a simple one: was South Africa a one-off, a rare bright light in a difficult period, or a genuine sign of things to come?

A win today would show that we really have turned a corner.

The USA are stronger than South Africa, so the question is whether Wales can put another 80 minute performance against someone higher in the rankings again.

80 minutes is what we want.

    They were inspirational last week.

I was with a lot of our under 18's who were so inspired by the win and that's what it's all about, it's inspiring the next generation and filling people with hope and passion for the game and the girls did just that.

Resurgent, inspired, unrecognisable, brave - pick one. Each describes Wales' performance against South Africa in their WXV opener.

Sean Lynn's side scored eight tries against one of the rising forces in women's rugby in one of the best displays of their professional era.

But they know they cannot afford to bask in glory. Wales must now prove they are more than a one-hit wonder.

The next - and even bigger - challenge is USA, who, like the Springboks, have rocketed up the world rankings and are now a top six team.

The Eagles looked down and out in Dublin, but scored 28 unanswered points to secure a remarkable comeback victory over Ireland.

So we have two teams with confidence and momentum and two teams who are backing themselves to back it up. It should make for an interesting contest.

What a difference a win makes.

The vibe around town today is brilliant, people actually know there's an international women's match going on.

You've only got to step out of the train station and you're confronted with merchandise and banners.

Let's hope all the fans make their way over to the Arms Park for what promises a tightly contested match between two resurgent teams.

  12. Lions tour a 'top goal' for Wales prop Tuipulotupublished at 14:46 BST 26 September

    Wales v USA (15:00 BST)

Wales prop Sisilia Tuipulotu says selection for next year's inaugural British and Irish Lions women's tour is among her top rugby priorities.

The in-form tight-head scored two tries in Wales' emphatic victory over South Africa on Friday, under the watchful eye of Lions head coach Jo Yapp.

With Yapp saying she will only take the best players in each position, most of the touring party to New Zealand is expected to be made up of England's world cup-winning stars.

But Tuipulotu's barnstorming display certainly puts her on the radar for when the squad is announced in May.

"I actually didn't know she [Yapp] was there until after the game, but I'm very happy that we gave the performance that we did in front of her," said Tuipulotu.

"It's probably number one on my goal list right now, to perform the best I can to put my hand up for a spot on that team."

  14. Inspired Wales seal stunning win over South Africapublished at 14:41 BST 26 September

    Wales v USA (15:00 BST)

Well, what it start was to this WXV campaign for Wales under the lights here at the Cardiff Arms Park last Friday night.

Wales had gone nine Tests without a victory heading into their WXV Global Series opener, with a tight contest predicted against a Springboks side ranked three places above them in the world.

But Sean Lynn's bold selections paid off as Wales attacked with a freedom and intent they have not produced for years on the way to a 50-19 win.

Sean Lynn's side have been dealt their share of criticism in recent years, and understandably so with a winless World Cup and three Six Nations wooden spoons.

But they were unrecognisable in the Welsh capital as players shook off the shackles of the past and delivered a performance of real promise.

Wales have recalled Lleucu George and Carys Cox to their backline for this afternoon's WXV Test against USA.

George reclaims the fly-half position with Keira Bevan reverting back to scrum-half in the absence of Seren Lockwood, who has been ruled out with a head injury.

Carys Cox replaces Seren Singleton on the wing having recovered from summer knee surgery.

There are three new faces on the bench in Molly Reardon, Sian Jones and Nikita Prothero.

Alex Callender and Kate Williams will once again co-captain the side at Cardiff Arms Park, while Georgia Evans will win her 50th cap.

Wales: Neumann; Cox, Keight, Bell, A Williams; George, Bevan; Davies, K Jones, Tuipulotu, B Metcalfe, Evans, K Williams (co-capt), Callender (co-capt), King.
