Everton yet again, think they can do all their business on the last day! No getting players in early, for pre-summer training and friendlies! There were three requirements - two full-backs and a goal scoring forward. The squad is light and is even lighter now!

One positive on a difficult deadline day for Everton was the loan signing of Jack Grealish for a second successive season from Manchester City.
Grealish proved to be a popular addition to the Everton squad in 2025-26 before a stress fracture to his foot ended his campaign after a 1-0 win at Aston Villa in January.
While Everton's goal output was broadly the same with and without Grealish, their win percentage and points-per-game tallies were both significantly higher with the 30-year-old in the side.
Despite missing four months of the season, only James Garner (7) provided more assists than Grealish's six for the club, while Grealish ranked top for fouls won (58) and touches in the opposition box (105).
The England international's creative numbers also compare favourably to Iliman Ndiaye, who has departed Everton for Manchester City.
Grealish created eight more chances, won 21 more fouls and provided three more assists in the Premier League despite playing 12 fewer games than the Senegal international.

Evertons transfer window has been disastrous. Grealish is great and if he stays fit will be a real positive, but any injury to Barry and we are in real trouble up top. And is there not one right back in the entire world we could have signed??

The 30-year-old forward spent last season on loan with the Toffees, before a foot injury in February ended his campaign.
"It feels so good. I'm so happy," said Grealish. "I think I'm at my best at everything in life, not just football, when I feel loved.
"That's what the manager has given me, what my teammates have given me and especially what the fans have given me.
"Every time I see an Everton fan, it's just pure love and the way they've welcomed me since that first game against Leeds, I'll never forget that. It means a lot to me and hopefully I've made a few Everton fans happy.
"I had a perfect time here for the first six months, then I stayed around after I got injured. I've been watching all the Everton games in pre-season and since the season started.
"Now I feel ready to go. I'm ready to start training tomorrow and prepare for the games.
"I will be going to sleep tonight with a smile on my face, ready for training tomorrow. I can't wait to be back at Hill Dickinson on Sunday."

Everton being Everton. New ownership was supposed to make us a more professional outfit. Catastrophic and negligent failure on the two most important recruitment objectives, right back and striker. Last minute dealing with palpable panic - a Zirkzee loan!

There's always some late drama on deadline day, and this summer's window was no exception.
Everton were on the hunt for a striker after Beto left Merseyside and they set their sights on Monaco's Folarin Balogun.
A deal to sign the 25 year-old seemed to be progressing nicely with a £40m fee agreed on Monday - but the deal was renegotiated because of an issue with the American's medical.
The Toffees had submitted a deal sheet before Tuesday's 23:00 deadline, but ultimately the American changed his mind and the deal fell through.
Everton reacted quickly and tried a last gasp move for Manchester United' forward Joshua Zirkzee but a deal never materialised. Sky Sports and other news outlets report that the Red Devils rejected Everton's proposal to take the Dutch striker on loan.
David Moyes now has one less striker at his disposal, until January at least.
For Balogun, yesterday's drama only adds to what has already been a hectic summer. His name was at the centre of controversy during the World Cup when Fifa decided to suspend his one-game ban.

As timelines go, turbulent doesn't really do justice to the final days of Everton's transfer window.
First, Everton CEO Angus Kinnear declared in an interview with BBC Merseyside on 18 August that the club were in a stable financial position heading towards the end of the transfer window.
Two weeks later, and with just two days of the transfer window remaining, the club accepted a £40m bid from Nottingham Forest for highly rated academy graduate Harrison Armstrong, a move that collapsed following fan backlash.
The chaotic approach continued long into deadline day.
Right-back Nathan Patterson, midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, striker Beto and star winger Iliman Ndiaye were all allowed to leave the club.
While Patterson and Ndiaye were replaced by Lyon defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish respectively, a £40m deal for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun collapsed.
The USA international walked away at the 11th hour despite a deal sheet being submitted amid last-gasp interest in Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee and Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham.
The net result is that a squad that manager David Moyes desperately wanted strengthening heads into the third game of the season at home to the Red Devils with one striker, one right-back and one left-back.
Kinnear had spoken of a two-year recruitment plan following the takeover by the Friedkin Group in December 2024.
Everton have brought in some promising younger players but their net spend in this window stands at £25.35m of profit.
They end it in an arguably weaker position than when it opened nine weeks ago.

Looking at the list of players signed on deadline day- They probably decided that bad decisions should be avoided in future. That being said Lammens has turned out well so far. We could have done with a left back - I wouldn't say failure though. We have a much Better midfield now.

Manchester United did try to make a signing on deadline day, but had no luck.
The Red Devils failed in a move to sign Manchester City full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri on loan and also missed out on Leicester City's teenage midfielder Louis Page.
United have been trying to address a perceived weakness in Michael Carrick's defence for the latter part of the transfer window.
Having opted against pursuing deals for Barcelona's Alejandro Balde and Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas, and the transfer deadline less than 12 hours away, United decided to check if a deal was possible for Algeria's Ait-Nouri.
United sources said they were not interested in a permanent deal for Ait-Nouri and were told the only acceptable outcome for City would be a loan with an obligation to buy, which they rejected.
City sources said Ait-Nouri was staying with them.

Failure of a window for Manchester United, we’ve been crying out for a left back years and we didn’t get one. The lack of purchases for a team back in the Champions League is alarming. Awful from the ownership to hyper focus on one area of the pitch.

Manchester United failed to make a deadline day signing for the first time in seven years.
In 2019, the Red Devils had what most would agree was a rather underwhelming transfer window when they signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and backup goalkeeper Lee Grant.
Since then, United had made a last-gasp signing every summer:

When Enzo Maresca was appointed as Pep Guardiola's replacement in June, the Italian apologised to his former club Chelsea for the "disruption" caused by his mid-season departure.
Senior City sources had told BBC Sport at the time that they held no ill feeling towards Chelsea and that the now-resolved contractual dispute was between the Stamford Bridge club and Maresca.
And that has played out in this deal happening.
The manager was the key factor in this blockbuster deal with Maresca keen to reunite with his former Chelsea skipper.
It is understood Maresca wanted Fernandez as someone who he can fully trust and rely on, a player that is familiar with the manager's instructions, the patterns of play and does not need to be learn how to operate in the middle of the park in the system.
The 46-year-old had a similar approach when being appointed as Chelsea manager in 2023, signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall having worked with the player at Leicester during their Championship-winning campaign.
Looking back on Friday's pre-match news conference, Maresca had hinted at a late incoming by saying he was hoping to add "a captain" to his squad before the end of the transfer window.
City have lost the experience of Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Rodri this summer, with Ruben Dias taking the captain's armband and Erling Haaland being part of the leadership group.
Fernandez adds big-game know-how to City's midfield after winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, being named young player of the tournament, and helping his country to a second-straight final in July.
His antics during the summer may not make him a universally popular figure but Fernandez comes across as a player that team-mates love to have alongside them and one that gets under the skin of the opposition players and supporters.
