Earlier, we watched Rory McIlroy drive the par-four ninth and leave himself about 15 feet for eagle.
Does Bryson DeChambeau fancy a crack at the green off the tee?
Absolutely, he does. He's got the driver out... and he gives it the beans.
It's not quite on line, though, and ends up somewhere in the rough down the right side of the hole.

Jordan Spieth wipes out his promising start with a couple of poor holes.
The American double bogeys the seventh after getting himself in a bit of a mess on the green.
Tommy Fleetwood's tee shot at the par three was just under 50 foot from the hole, but he is calmly able to tap in from three feet for par.

Scottie Scheffler's birdie attempt looks on line but breaks away at the final moment. It'll be another par for the world number one.

Oh dear. Alex Fitzpatrick has pulled his drive big time on 18. He's going to need a bit of luck from over there.
Bob MacIntyre took the iron but got underneath it. Instead of chasing down the fairway, it balloons up into the sky and takes a soft bounce when it lands, leaving him a mighty dig from 262 yards into the green.

Nicely done by Scottie Scheffler, who judges his approach to the eighth green well from the thick rough and will get a decent chance for birdie.
About 20 yards up ahead, Bryson DeChambeau is in a similar situation and his second drifts into a greenside bunker.

Im Sung-jae and Dan Brown, who were both one shot off the lead overnight, are just slipping away a touch in the closing holes of their second round.
Im can't get up and down in two from the left of the green and drops a shot on the 16th.
Im is five off Lucas Herbert's lead while Brown, who registered a par at that hole, is one shot further back.

That was a little brave from Jon Rahm. It is a narrow shot up this seventh hole. Rahm's shot just about got up there, but Tommy Fleetwood played it safe and cautious.

Up against the face of the greenside bunker in two at the par-five 17th, the Englishman produces a magical moment from the sand.
Eyes closed, huge thump. The ball flies up into the air and lands two feet from the pin. A simply glorious shot and he moves to five under with that birdie!
Bob MacIntyre nearly found sand with his second, but his ball scuttled around the trap and found its way on to the green.
A brilliant outcome...and he's only gone and holed it from 39 feet, judging the contours between his ball and the cup to perfection.
The crowd loved those two shots.
They both move to five under. What an eventful hole!

LIV Golfer Rahm fluffs a straightforward putt six feet while American Spieth does likewise from a little further away.

While his brother jostles for position near the top of the leaderboard, world number three Matt Fitzpatrick has been reflecting on a disappointing week, with a second straight 72 meaning he'll miss the cut:
"It is disappointing, but like I say, I didn't really feel like I played that bad. I've hit three shots today that I've hit them exactly how I wanted them, and one is in a bush 30 yards long.
"One has basically been on the green for basically 15 seconds and then dropped off the green, and that's another dropped shot. Then I've hit one that somehow has gone less than the normal number, and there's 15 yards of help downwind. Now all of a sudden you're plugged in the face of a bunker.
"So I've got four shots, and three shots I've hit good. That's the way links golf is. When it's this firm, there's a lot of luck of the bounces and luck of the lies. It is what it is."

Yesterday I pleaded for Birkdale to show more visible support for Tommy Fleetwood to complement the raucous vocal encouragement.
I was thinking Fleetwood face masks or mullet-style wigs which imitate his luscious locks.
Now, I doubt they sprung into action because of my witterings on this page, but I'm pleased to report five women have stepped up to the task.
Stood on the fifth hole, each is wearing a white t-shirt with a letter of Fleetwood's first name printed on in black.
T-O-M-M-Y! What have you got? TOMMY! Well played, team. And make sure you stick together all day in that formation...
