  1. Norris goes fastestpublished at 15:39 BST

Max Verstappen goes P3 for now and two tenths behind the pace. That'll be enough to send him through but he's not challenging for top spot right now.

Lando Norris then goes fastest with a 1:11.628, 0.013 seconds faster than his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen and Lawson both out there very quickly onto the circuit as they want as much clean air as possible. They don't want to risk anything.

While we wait for some final times in this session, here's something.

Just over a tenth separates Oscar Piastri in top spot with Lewis Hamilton in fifth fastest position so far.

    Just under five minutes remaining.

Great stuff from Arvid Lindblad so far, I must say. The Racing Bulls rookie is seventh fastest in the session.

Verstappen and Lawson are only six hundredths away from Gasly in the drop zone. Are Red Bull hiding some pace?

I'm not sure whether it's a case of showing too much too soon but McLaren look mighty fast this afternoon.

Oscar Piastri in particular looks very comfortable with some composed laps under his belt.

Meanwhile, George Russell seems to have the edge on his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli so far.

There's not a lot in this! Pole could go any which way.

  8. Postpublished at 15:32 BST

Max Verstappen's eighth fastest and eight tenths off at the moment and four one-thousandths ahead of temporary team-mate Liam Lawson.

Just under a second separates the top 10.

Max Verstappen out on the track just for an out lap. You can see how much it means to the fans. He gets a standing round of applause as he makes his way on to the track.

Keep an eye on both McLaren drivers, they're both going very quickly.

George Russell is going very quickly straight out the blocks. He's the quicker of the two Mercedes' at this point. That was a very fast lap. He means business.

George Russell sets a 1:11.959, a whopping four tenths faster than the time that his Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli had set just moments before.

He looks in fine form after the summer break.

It doesn't look good on paper for Red Bull with Racing Bulls in seventh and eighth. Red Bull are struggling to match the front runners. In the hands of Max Verstappen, they're in the top six but they're not as comfortable here as other cars.

  16. Go! Go! Go!published at 15:25 BST

Right then, we continue into Q2.

Oscar Piastri led with a 1:12.610 with Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris fractions of a second behind him.

I said this yesterday in sprint qualifying but I can't call this. It's so close. McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes all look well set up.

Oliver Bearman in 20th couldn't get that improvement that he needed. For Alex Albon he can wipe the sweat off his brow for now as he'll head onto Q2 with a chance to push on forward.

Carlos Sainz: It was ok, our car was good.

A big disappoint for Carlos Sainz. Alex Albon will get another shot at it but I don't think he'll trouble many cars.

So that's Carlos Sainz out in Q1 with Alex Albon managing to scrape through a place and a matter of hundredths between himself and his Williams team-mate.

Likewise Fernando Alonso will be disappointed with that showing and how that session ended.
