Shakhtar Donetsk came from behind to beat AEK Athens in front of 29,144 fans at Stamford Bridge - around 2,000km from the club's base in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian champions have not played at their Donbas Arena home in Donetsk since 2014 and have staged their home European fixtures in Poland, Germany and Slovenia since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

And their first home match in London saw them fall behind initially when Stavros Pilios worked his way into the box with some brilliant skill before squaring it for Lovro Majer to sweep into the bottom corner in the 28th minute.

Just six minutes later they were level. Referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarded a free-kick when Shakhtar's Alisson Santana was fouled by Filipe Relvas but a VAR intervention ruled it was inside the box.

Up stepped Pedrinho to fire the spot kick into the bottom right corner, sending AEK Athens goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli the wrong way.

Ten minutes from time, Brignoli deflected Vinicius Tobias' drive across goal to give the home side the lead before Gleiker Mendoza wrapped up the victory six minutes later.

Greek side AEK Athens face a tough test next when they travel to Manchester City on 20 October, while Shakhtar Donetsk visit the San Siro a day later to face Inter Milan.
