French football journalist Jibril Diop has explained what Newcastle fans can expect from their new forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo: "His main attribute is beating his man one-on-one, take-ons, but he's also very good. He has that deft touch that you just can't teach. So, he's very good at, you know, in close control and running with the ball, progressive carries."

"One area that he needs to work on is on his back to goal, he's not very good with his back to goal. For someone who's six foot he's not very good at aerial duels, so that's where you need to be a bit patient if you're a Newcastle fan because he can frustrate you in that regard but he has that IQ as well that you can't teach, that deft touch I mentioned, so very high potential."

Newcastle United have signed Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for an initial fee of £51.4m plus add-ons.

The 21-year-old forward has signed a long-term contract and will wear the number 20 shirt.

Fernandez-Pardo was tellingly left out of Lille's squad for the 2-2 draw against Paris St-Germain last week and ordered to train away from the first-team squad until the window shuts on Tuesday and the 21-year-old's future has been resolved.

He joined Lille's academy in 2014, before moving to join Belgium side Genk's academy and then senior team in 2023.

He returned to Lille in 2024 and played in the Champions League and Europa League.

Fernandez-Pardo earned a call-up to the Belgian national team for the 2026 World Cup. He appeared in all three group fixtures.

Joining Newcastle, he said: "I’m really, really happy to be here and very proud to be at such a big club.

“I spoke to the head coach and he really showed how much he wanted me to be here. In terms of my own career progression, it made complete sense to come so I didn't hesitate at all.

“I know the club, I know about the stadium, I know it's a fantastic atmosphere. I've followed the team. What I've seen is a team that's very ambitious, wants to attack, get forward, really chase teams and go after them, and that's really something I want to take part in as well.

“I'm still young, I'm still hungry, and that's why I'm here, and I want to make that progress with Newcastle. I can't wait to start the wonderful adventure here."

Sources at Liverpool confirmed yesterday that Trey Nyoni was the subject of a rejected bid from Nottingham Forest. But Forest say that this was not the case.

Either way, 19-year old Nyoni is going nowhere this summer.

After an impressive pre-season, Andoni Iraola views the midfielder as an important member of his squad and with Curtis Jones leaving, Nyoni is set to get more minutes this season.

Federico Chiesa has been linked with a move away to Liverpool this summer but it now looks like the Italian is set to stay at Anfield under Andoni Iraola.

Chiesa is contracted until 2028 and made just one Premier League start last season but unless a late offer comes in, he will provide another attacking option for Liverpool this season.

In July, Chiesa told reporters that he was only “thinking about Liverpool” and that it was a “new chapter.”

Chiesa has been unavailable for Liverpool’s first two Premier League games due to a muscle injury.

A medical is used to assess the overall health and fitness of a potential signing, as well as identifying any underlying medical issues they may have.

There is no legal requirement for players to have a medical before a transfer, but they do help a club to decide whether to complete a signing.

Atalanta and Brazil midfielder Ederson was set to move to Manchester United in the 2026 summer transfer window, but this deal fell through because of the outcome of his medical.

A medical test can take as long as six hours, and includes:

• Physical exams
• Cardiovascular health tests
• Lab tests
• Musculoskeletal tests
• Neurological tests

The results are then sent to the managerial team of the buying club, where their doctors and medical staff can analyse the information.

Hull winger Liam Millar is having a medical at Birmingham ahead of a loan move.

The 26-year-old had interest from Stoke and Preston but is due to move to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

Tigers boss Sergej Jakirovic did not rule out an exit before the deadline despite Millar's winner at Coventry on Saturday, which earned Hull a second win in their opening two Premier League games.

Canada international Millar was understood to be open to a return to Preston after spending 2023-24 on loan at Deepdale but is now due to move to Birmingham.

He moved to Hull from Basel in 2024 and has made 53 appearances, scoring five goals for the club.

The news that Everton have directed their search for a new right-back towards Lyon's Ainsley Maitland-Niles may draw a wry grin or two from their supporters.

Everton were in talks for the then-Arsenal defender on deadline day in 2021 before he opted to stay in north London. Six months later, Maitland-Niles joined Roma on loan before eventually leaving Arsenal for Lyon on a permanent deal 18 months later.

It means that Everton's three-year search for a right-back could end by signing a player they first made an offer for five years ago.

He would be half the price of Fulham's Kenny Tete, though, and with a better recent fitness record.
