Hull City's fine start to the season continued as they saw off Championship side Stoke City on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup third round.

Tigers goalkeeper Dillon Phillips saved Stoke's fourth penalty from George Hirst in the shootout in what was the decisive spot kick.

Mohamed Belloumi scored Hull's fifth penalty after Hidemasa Morita, Paddy McNair, Elliot Stroud and Liam Millar netted to seal their passage into the next round.

Hull, fresh off their upset win over Manchester United on their Premier League return at the weekend, made 11 changes for this EFL tie but they had the first chance when David Akintola charged into the box, but his shot was too close to the goalkeeper.

Tomas Rigo went close for Stoke after Sorba Thomas found him but his shot was just over.

The Championship side did take the lead six minutes before the break when Robert Bozenik headed in a Thomas cross.

But the Premier League outfit were level right on the half-time whistle as Kieran Dowell fired into the net first time after being picked out by Liam Millar.

Sergej Jakirovic's Hull had an opportunity soon after the restart with Millar sending in a low cross from the left which required a save from Stoke keeper Josh Griffiths at his near post.

But neither side created a winner with Tyrell Sellars-Fleming firing over a late Hull City chance, which forced the game to spot kicks and saw the Premier League side into the third round
