Ephron Mason-Clark came off the bench to score and Victor Torp fired home a penalty as Coventry City rallied late to hold off plucky Plymouth Argyle.

Sky Blues forward Mason-Clark netted just five minutes after coming off the bench to put his side back in front after they had surrendered a two-goal advantage against their League One hosts.

Torp then scored from the spot in the 78th minute to put the Premier League side into the Carabao Cup third round draw.

Coventry were ahead inside three minutes at Home Park when Liam Kitching played the ball forward and a cute flick from Caleb Yirenkyi sent Taiwo Awoniyi through and he finished calmly.

Frank Lampard's men doubled their lead two minutes later and this time Awoniyi was the creator on his first start for the club as the £9m summer signing from Nottingham Forest got in front of Wes Harding before putting in Jack Rudoni to slot home.

It looked like it would be an easy night for the top-flight side but Plymouth pulled one back in the 21st minute when Oliver Irow, on loan from Tottenham, fired in a debut goal after a strong run.

Half-time substitute Xavier Amaechi then closed down a hesitating Kitching in the 54th minute, won the ball and raced through to send a low strike into the bottom corner and level the tie.

But Coventry regrouped and Torp recycled a ball and sent a low cross into the box for Mason-Clark to bundle home in the 67th minute.

Joe Edwards then clipped visiting striker Brandon Thomas-Asante when the Plymouth substitute tried to clear the ball and referee Elliott Swallow pointed to the spot.

From the resulting penalty, Torp found the top corner to settle the outcome.
