  1. ICYMI: Tottenham agree £85m fee for Man City winger Savinho

    Right, back to this morning's big story.

    We have discussed what Savinho could bring to Tottenham after news that Spurs have agreed to pay Manchester City an initial £75m for the Brazilian winger, with the fee potentially rising to £85m with add-ons.

    The fee has raised eyebrows, with 88% of readers who took part in our poll this morning saying that it is "too expensive".

    Coventry City make their Premier League bow at defending champions Arsenal tonight (kick off 20:00 BST).

    It promises to be a tough opener for Frank Lampard's side, who won their place back in the top flight by finishing top of the Championship last season.

    Coventry City have announced the signing of English goalkeeper Dan Bentley from Wolves on a two-year contract.

    The 33-year-old former Southend and Brentford stopper has made just 14 appearances for Wolves over the past three seasons since signing from Bristol City.

    He is keen to bring experience to the goalkeeping group at Coventry on their return to the Premier League.

    "I’m a senior player with good leadership qualities and someone who has really high standards," he told the Sky Blues website.

    "Of course, I want to make my mark on the pitch as well. There’s a really good goalkeeping group here, so I want to complement that group and when I get my opportunity, it’s down to me to take it."

    Savinho is very expensive and hasn’t shown worth of being £85m. However, Marmoush will be a more important signing for Spurs if they do it. Given consistent game time, I think he’ll be a great signing for any Premier League club.

    As a Spurs fan I agree the price is high, but everyone seems to be forgetting that the vast majority of Savinho’s appearances are off the bench as he is in direct competition with Doku.

  6. Why Spurs are still betting big on Savinho

    Savinho's versatility and directness could suit Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi's approach.

    His teams often try to draw opponents forward in possession before exploiting the space that opens up, creating one-against-one situations for wide players.

    Savinho's acceleration and willingness to take defenders on make him well suited to those moments.

    From the left he can hold the width and attack the outside, while from the right he can move inside on to his stronger left foot and combine with team-mates.

    His value is not limited to goals.

    At Girona, much of his threat came from carrying the ball over distance and disrupting defensive shape, which could give Spurs a more direct route through compact defences and create openings for central forwards.

    That side of his game was less visible at City, where competition for attacking places was intense and players such as Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki were better suited to central roles.

    Tottenham are therefore investing in the qualities Savinho showed so clearly at Girona: pace, ball carrying, one-against-one ability and chance creation from wide areas.

    At 22, those attributes help explain why Spurs are prepared to pay a huge sum despite his modest scoring return in Manchester.

    As a City season ticket holder I wanted Savinho to work but he never managed to make a mark, seemed to lack confidence. If this can change he can be a good player, but for the money being reported it's a no-brainer for City to sell.

    Spending £300million on players this summer won't guarantee Spurs doing any better this season than last. The players they're bringing in are very overrated. Both Savinho and Marmoush were fringe/squad players at City, and I don't expect them to finish much higher than mid table.

    A good signing, but a bit pricey. Will hopefully add something a bit different to the attack. Need someone through the middle but ultimately there is sign of intent to get the club back up the table and into Europe again. Can't wait to see how comes next.

    Savinho's reputation was built during a breakout 2023-24 campaign with Girona, where he was on loan from Troyes, when he became one of La Liga's most dangerous ball carriers.

    He featured in 37 league matches as Girona secured Champions League qualification for the first time, registering nine goals and eight assists across his various attacking roles.

    Savinho also led La Liga for:

    • Successful take-ons (104)
    • Progressive carries (181)
    • Goal-creating actions (25)
    • Expected assists (9.9)

    He also ranked second for passes into the penalty area and progressive carrying distance.

    Most of his best work came from the left. Girona used him there in 27 matches, during which he scored five goals and supplied six assists, although he also featured centrally and from the right.

    Is the Savinho price too high? Of course it is. Is he the right player for Spurs? The management team think so. Should the club back the manager and have they got the funds? Yes. So buy him! No one will worry about the fee if it works out.

    When signing for Manchester City in July 2024, Savinho explained what he believed was his best position.

    The Brazilian said: "I can play on the left, on the right. I can play inside too, but my best position, the one I like playing the most, is playing on the right wing.”

    He added: "I’m a Brazilian who likes to play on the front foot, to be happy, to play joyful football. I like playing one against one, making assists, scoring goals too, and helping the team. My main characteristic, what I like the most, is being happy and getting fans up off their seats."

    With Savinho on his way to Spurs, Enzo Maresca is seeking reinforcements at left wing.

    Brazilian winger Allan Elias has emerged as a prime target and, according to ESPN, City are in talks to sign the 22-year-old from Palmeiras.

    The club have reportedly also enquired about the availability of Adam Wharton, but Crystal Palace want to keep the 22-year-old England midfielder, according to the Sun.

    I don't think that there will be one City fan who does not believe this is a magnificent deal for City. Savinho flattered to deceive every time he played.

    So, City buy the player from themselves for a cut price, he has a very average Premier League season, and his value trebles. Either Spurs have been mugged or it's very clever management by City.

    Savinho's arrival will push Spurs' spending this summer past £300m, although they have recouped about £140m through the sales of Cristian Romero, Djed Spence and Luka Vuskovic.

    Tottenham kick off their Premier League campaign at Brentford on Saturday (17:30 BST), while Manchester City host Bournemouth on Sunday (14:00 BST).

    What I don't understand is how players' values are going up, after showing that they may not be good enough. How is Savinho worth nearly double what they paid, after underwhelming on the pitch? Chelsea want £60mil plus for Delap or Jackson, who've both shown they're not worth it either.

  20. Savinho's struggles in two seasons at Man City

    Manchester City signed Brazil winger Savinho from French side Troyes in July 2024 on a five-year contract in a deal worth 40m euros (£30.8m).

    The then 20-year-old had starred on loan at Girona in the previous season, scoring 11 goals and weighing in with 10 assists in 41 appearances as they finished third in La Liga.

    Both Girona and Troyes are part of the City Football Group.

    He has since scored seven goals and added 16 assists in 84 games for City, but struggled for form and game time last season, scoring once in 24 league appearances.

    Savinho also added three goals in five appearances in the domestic cups in the 2025-26 campaign.
