The VAR did have a look at that but no penalty is given.

Instead City have a free-kick wide on the left. It's whipped in by Enzo Fernandez and results in a corner for the hosts.

Manchester City want a penalty. Rayan Cherki thinks Marquinhos has fouled him in the box.

The referee is having none of it but the Frenchman signals that he wants VAR to have a look at it.

A loose pass from Antoine Semenyo almost lands Manchester City in bother but Ruben Dias tidies things up.

It comes back to Warren Zaire-Emery, who is in acres of space, and his shot is saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Manchester City look to get Jeremy Doku on the ball and that is not a bad tactic after his weekend exploits.

PSG are doubling up on him, though, and Achraf Hakimi wins the ball back.

Villa midfielder Johan Manzambi has a shot in the box but it's deflected and then runs through to Ederson.

Ex-Manchester City keeper Ederson has failed to keep a clean sheet in any of his last seven appearances against Aston Villa.

Pep Guardiola, as expected, is at Etihad Stadium - and is keeping it low profile wearing a cap and seated behind Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano.

Ibrahim Mbaye has a crack from outside the box for Villa - but it's saved by Ederson.

Senegal international Mbaye, 18, is the youngest African player to start a Champions League match for a Premier League side since Gaël Kakuta for Chelsea in December 2009.

Fenerbahce left-back Archie Brown goes down in the box - but doesn't really shout for a penalty - and doesn't get one. Matty Cash got a touch on the ball.

Brown is back in his home city of Birmingham today.

We know that PSG will press ferociously and Gianluigi Donnarumma needs to be on point with his passing.

Johan Manzambi, 21 today, wins Villa the first corner of the game off ex-Wolves man Nelson Semedo.

And it's another chance. John McGinn swings the corner in, Pau Torres heads it back across and Ross Barkley nods over from 12 yards.

Desire Doue is released down the left-hand side but it goes out for a goal-kick.

Almost a heart-in-mouth moment as Gianluigi Donnarumma's pass out from the back to Marc Guehi is a little wobbly.

Villa captain John McGinn has the first shot of the game, a low roller from about 22 yards but it goes wide of Ederson's right-hand post.

Away we go in Manchester, Birmingham and across the continent.

And literally. Lots of fireworks and enough pyro for several rock concerts, as well as a video of the club's greatest moments

Spectacular and Manchester City fans in buoyant mood despite all the noise around the club.

Bit of an "us against the world" feel already.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has struggled at right-back this season so it will be interesting to see how he copes as an emergency left-back.

With Matteo Ruggeri out with a hamstring injury and Ian Maatsen sidelined with an ankle problem the 28-year-old is needed to fill the gap.

Internally, there is an acceptance he is still adapting to the coaching methods of Unai Emery after his summer move from West Ham.

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will tonight play his first match in England for almost five years.

The forward has been selected in the starting XI for Fenerbahce against Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Champions League.

Greenwood’s last appearance in England was on 22 January 2022 in Manchester United’s 1-0 against West Ham.

He was arrested later that month following allegations surrounding material which was published online. Charges against the former England international, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

The 25-year-old left Old Trafford in September 2023 after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.

Greenwood initially signed for La Liga side Getafe on loan before joining Marseille in July 2024 for a deal worth up to £26.6m.

In July he moved to Fenerbahce in Turkey in July for around £32m.

Greenwood played for Marseille against Newcastle and Liverpool last season in the Champions League at Stade Velodrome.
