Highlights: Late drama in Ipswich v Sunderland
Ipswich secured a winning return to the Premier League as substitute Jack Clarke scored a 90th-minute winner against his former club Sunderland at Portman Road.
Last season's Championship runners-up opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Julio Enciso intercepted a pass on the halfway line, dribbled to the edge of the box and squared the ball to fellow summer signing Emersonn who tapped in.
Sunderland levelled in style six minutes before half-time when Nilson Angulo's curling free-kick went in off the crossbar.
The home side scored a late winner through former Black Cats winger Clarke, who curled the ball into the far bottom corner from just inside the box.
Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil dubbed the match a "welcome back to the Premier League" moment.
"You can see how hard it is to win a Premier League game," he told BBC Match of the Day. "You're 1-0 up, looking comfortable and someone smashes a free-kick in from 25 yards.
"But we were never going to settle for 1-1. We were still trying to get up the pitch and get pressure high up, and for our goal to come from a pressure phase that late in the game shows the togetherness, fitness and work-rate of the players."
Clarke and Enciso impress for new-look Ipswich
Gary O'Neil post-match interview - Ipswich Town 2-1 Sunderland
Clarke, 25, was signed by Ipswich from Sunderland two years ago in a deal worth £20m.
He was left on the bench for the Tractor Boys' opener by manager O'Neil, who was overseeing his first competitive match in charge, having replaced Kieran McKenna over the summer.
The hosts, who were relegated after one year in the top flight two seasons ago, have spent more than £100m in the transfer window and O'Neil started seven new signings on Saturday.
Of those seven, Julio Enciso, who joined from Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee, was the star, setting up Town's first goal by intercepting Luke O'Nien's sloppy pass and dribbling past Dan Ballard.
"We worked our socks off to sign him [Enciso]," O'Neil told BBC Match of the Day.
"Not only does he bring those moments of magic, he adds his work ethic and ability to defend, to stop Granit Xhaka finding his rhythm.
"There are not that many number 10s that have his quality and can do that side of it. He's special in that way."
He was replaced in the 71st minute by Clarke - whose moment of magic, after Sunderland defender Omar Alderete had a pass intercepted, decided the game.
Ipswich's next match is at home to League One Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (19:45 BST). They then play Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday, 30 August.
Sunderland second-best in Suffolk
Regis Le Bris post-match interview - Ipswich Town 2-1 Sunderland
Sunderland have had a quieter transfer window, holding on to their best players and only signing left-back Dayann Methalie and right-back Thomas Meunier who started on Saturday.
Last season, Regis Le Bris' side shocked the Premier League with a 3-0 opening-day win over West Ham on their way to an impressive seventh-placed finish.
On paper, the Black Cats were the stronger team on Saturday - and they had more of the possession, but created few clear-cut chances.
Other than the goal, their best chance came early in the second half at 1-1, but Brian Brobbey's close-range shot on the turn was blocked by Marcelino Nunez.
Asked if his side's loss could be put down to early-season rustiness, Le Bris told BBC Match of the Day: "it is often the case - it is not unusual.
"Today it was massive because of the consequence but this is the Premier League, it is ruthless. We know every team we face has quality."
Sunderland's next match is at home to Fulham on Sunday, 30 August (14:00 BST).
They will also learn their league phase opponents in the Europa League in Friday's draw.
