Ipswich are progressing with a move to take Tammy Abraham on loan from Aston Villa.

The striker is poised to leave Villa Park with Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson closing in on a £65m move to the club.

That would also mean Ollie Watkins is expected to join Al-Hilal for around £51m as Villa completely revamp their forward line.

Villa had been open to letting Abraham go despite only signing him from Besitkas for £18.25m in January.

Abraham was happy at Villa and was preparing to fight for his place but is now likely to move to Portman Road. It is due to be a straight loan, with no option or obligation for Ipswich to buy the 28-year-old.

He had scored three goals in 17 appearances for Villa, having previously played for them on loan to help them back into the Premier League in 2018-19.

Ipswich have spent around £150m on 12 summer signings since returning to the Premier League.

Aston Villa are close to an agreement to sign striker Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £65m which will allow Villa to sell Ollie Watkins.

There is a broad agreement between the clubs over the terms of a move for the 25-year-old Jackson, with Chelsea set to achieve their asking price with an initial sum of £47.5m with £17.5m in add-ons.

If the Senegal international agrees personal terms and completes the switch to Villa, his arrival is expected to trigger England international Watkins' move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

A deal worth about £51m will see the 30-year-old leave Villa Park, having joined the club from Brentford in 2020 and become their record Premier League goalscorer with 108 top-flight goals.

We have already had a transfer move as Nottingham Forest signed Liam Delap from Chelsea.

Liverpool are also in advance talks to sign Bradley Barcola.

Here are a couple more transfer stories to bring you.

Shorn of confidence and lacking minutes, Liam Delap was still culpable for failing to take chances last season.

At Ipswich, his shot conversion rate was a career-best 17.7%, scoring 12 goals from an expected goals tally of only 9.3. At Chelsea, his shot conversion rate dropped to just 2.8%, scoring only once in the league from an xG of 4.5.

Confidence aside, part of the puzzle still to be solved with Delap is how best to utilise his impressive strength without his penchant for the physical element of Premier League football becoming counter productive.

Unnecessary tangles with defenders are so often a hallmark of Delap's do-or-die approach, even when playing his best football.

He competed in 413 duels in 2024-25, ranking him third of all Premier League players aged under 23, but only won 157 of them - suggesting he has the tendency to chase lost causes.

Additionally, he committed the second-most fouls of any player (72) and ranked joint second overall for bookings, matching 12 goals with 12 yellows cards that season.

Scott: Yes, we need a striker. Chris Wood will struggle to play 20 games this season with his knee. Igor Jesus still needs to prove his worth, and so does Arnaud Kalimuendo. But Delap isn't worth £50m. It would have to be less with add-ons until he proves his worth.

Kris: Honestly, this looks like a panic buy. I'm not impressed with the transfer business again - too slow, too ponderous and overseen by someone else who appears out of his depth. What would Delap add? Goals? Probably not given his record. Disappointing really.

Nicholas: This would be a great move for both parties. His style of play would work well in Forest's system and he would have an opportunity to play more. Wood is getting on, Jesus isn't really a striker and Kalimuendo is still an unknown quantity at this level.

Rob: Yes, Forest need a striker - and others. James McAtee will not replace Elliot Anderson. Wing-back cover is needed with the new formation. We have a glut of wide forwards who probably wouldn't make great cover for the wing-backs.

The decision for Liam Delap to join a congested Chelsea squad as a still-raw talent was met with some scepticism but the attraction of reuniting with then Blues head coach Enzo Maresca may have been a decisive factor.

Maresca was Manchester City's under-21 boss when Delap enjoyed great success with the club's academy, scoring 24 goals in 20 matches in 2020-21 as City won the Premier League 2 title.

His move to Chelsea did not work out. It began with Delap's decision to rule himself out of last summer's Under-21 European Championship - a tournament that England would go on to win – to make himself available for Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign.

Delap's struggles at Chelsea have been underpinned by three managerial changes and hamstring and shoulder injuries, but also difficulties adjusting to a different gameplan.

The finest season of Liam Delap's career to date was undoubtedly his first of regular football at the highest level.

When Ipswich paid an initial £15m for his services from Manchester City in July 2024, it appeared sensible business – a below market value fee for a promising England Under-21 international with the capacity to improve quickly.

The faith of then Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was repaid in spades when Delap scored 12 goals in his first Premier League campaign in 2024-25 despite operating in a side that would win four games all season and go on to be relegated in 19th place.

Bradley Barcola was the only player across Europe's top five leagues to average more than two shot-ending carries per 90 minutes (2.06), illustrating his ability to drive at opponents before creating shooting opportunities for himself.

He also averaged 8.69 touches in the opposition penalty area per 90 minutes - the seventh-highest figure among more than 1,500 eligible players - reinforcing the profile of a winger who consistently occupies goalscoring positions.

His shot map highlights a player who attacks dangerous central areas rather than settling for speculative efforts from distance. Only Ousmane Dembele had a better combined shot volume with chance creation in Ligue 1, underlining Barcola's rare ability to both finish attacks and create opportunities for team-mates.

The comparison with Salah is equally revealing. While both pose a significant goal threat, Barcola is a more direct ball carrier.

He attempted more take-ons per 90 than the Egypt forward last season (4.26 to 3.38), but created fewer chances (2.16 to 2.33), attempted far fewer crosses (1.15 to 4.89) and through balls (0.25 to 0.59).

The numbers point towards a player who looks to eliminate defenders himself rather than orchestrate attacks from wide areas.

There are also signs that his game continues to evolve under Luis Enrique.

At first glance, Bradley Barcola looks like the natural successor to Luis Diaz.

Liverpool chose not to sign a direct replacement after the Colombian's departure last summer, but the underlying data suggests the PSG forward could fill that void.

Opta's player similarity model rates the Frenchman as the winger whose output most closely resembled Diaz's across Europe's top five leagues in 2025-26 (78%), with Mohamed Salah (65%), Lamine Yamal (61%) and Vinicius Junior (61%) the next closest matches.

A closer look, however, suggests Liverpool would not simply be replacing one winger with another.

Barcola is a left winger by trade, having played almost all of his Champions League minutes for PSG on that flank, but his game is shaped by a centre-forward's instincts. He played as a striker until the age of 17, something reflected in his movement and shot selection.

Last season, he averaged 3.5 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1, placing him among the division's most active shooters despite operating from wide areas.

His 9.83 expected goals (xG) ranked in the 95th percentile among wingers across Europe's top five leagues, meaning only around 5% of wide players consistently found themselves in better goalscoring positions.

Barcola converted those chances into 11 league goals, outperforming his xG, while no PSG player or Ligue 1 winger recorded a higher xG total during the 2025-26 campaign.
