Sri Lanka have such a long tail that the top six can't take as many risks as they'd like to in these situations. They need to find another all-rounder to have a better balanced XI.

  2. SL 256-4published at 42 overs

Four singles off Rehan Ahmed's latest outing.

The leg spinner has figures of 2-39 from his seven overs.

That is the value of taking the positive option and really putting England under pressure.

It is very easy to go back into your shell, but they understand that this is a high-scoring ground.

  5. SL 252-4published at 41 overs

    A four follows immediately!

Pavan Rathnayake rocks back and pulls Gus Atkinson through backward square.

A couple of twos following, taking Sri Lanka past 250.

Meanwhile Atkinson is done for the day with figures of 2-55.

My word, what a good shot that was. It was sort out of nowhere. Pavan Rathnayake pumped it for six with such ease.

  7. 6 runs

    SL 244-4published at 40.3 overs

Oh, Pavan Rathnayake has woken up!

Having scored 18 from 22 balls, the Sri Lanka number four swats Gus Atkinson off a good length, sending the ball flying for a six over mid-wicket.

Is Liam Dawson not availiable for ODIs? Nothing against Ahmed. Talented young cricketer. However, if Rashid is injured for games or WC next year. I would want Dawson in the team.

    Teddy, Great Bookham

I will caveat this by saying Teddy sent this before Rehan picked up his two wickets.

  9. SL 237-4published at 40 overs

New batter Janith Liyanage denies Rehan Ahmed a wicket maiden, working a single into the leg side off the final ball of the over.

Charith Asalanka going for that slog sweep again.

Asalanka, the T20 captain, has not got going at all on this tour and he has got to go.

Gus Atkinson doesn't drop this one!

Having already tried to slog sweep Rehan Ahmed twice in the over, Charith Asalanka connects but only manages the ball straight into the hands of Atkinson at the mid-wicket ropes.

Not the greatest over for the Sri Lanka batter, who seemed to succumb to pressure after three dot balls.

Sri Lanka have done their homework, they are looking to go square.

Against Rehan Ahmed there's been a lot of sweeps.

England are tight on the ones, they are making Sri Lanka hit it past them.

That is exactly what Sri Lanka and Charith Asalanka needed.

  14. SL 236-3published at 39 overs

Pavan Rathnayake drives past the out-stretched hand of Gus Atkinson and Harry Brook makes a good diving stop at mid-on to stop a four.

Sri Lanka do get a boundary later in the over, with Charith Asalanka pulling to the ropes.

The way Sri Lanka started, the partnership they had, and the position they were in.

They will at least want to get to that 320-mark from here.

  16. Not outpublished at 38 overs

    SL 230-3

Yeah, nothing in that. Impact was outside the line.

England lose a review - they have one remaining.

One ball left in the over - Charith Asalanka nudges the ball into the covers and doesn't score.

  17. England reviewpublished at 15:19 BST 24 September

A bit of a punt on an lbw review?

Charith Asalanka gets his first four, pumping Rehan Ahmed through long-off, but is struck two balls later while down on one knee.

No-one seems that keen on the appeal, not even Rehan, but Harry Brook makes the signal for a review.

It makes captaincy easier when you pick up wickets. Will Jacks will fancy his chances against the left-hander, Charith Asalanka.

  19. SL 225-3published at 37 overs

Will Jacks comes back into the attack and concedes just three singles from his over.

Pavan Rathnayake, who has 16 from 19 balls, and new batter Charith Asalanka have a rebuilding job on their hands here.
