Full, straight and cannoning into the stumps!

    Theekshana b Baker 4 (SL 97-8)

A third wicket for Sonny Baker!

The 23-year-old strikes the bottom of Maheesh Theekshana's off stump with the full ball.

England are on the verge of a massive win.

  3. SL 95-7published at 14 overs

    Target 255

Dunith Wellalage goes again, driving Jamie Overton for four.

He then backs away to a short delivery, bowled from the round the wicket, and as he ducks the ball deflects off his raised bat.

Jos Buttler, who was moving to collect down the leg side, has to suddenly dive in the opposite direction and only gets a finger on it.

I'm not sure you can call that a drop - Wellalage takes a single to move to 18.

  4. SL 88-7published at 13 overs

    Target 255

Two more dot balls as Josh Tongue completes his allotted overs, finishing with figures of 1-25.

12 of those runs came from his final outing.

  5. 6 runs

    SL 88-7published at 12.4 overs

    That's not bad either.

Having faced two dot balls, Dunith Wellalage slaps Josh Tongue for a flat six over backward point.

  6. 6 runs

    SL 82-7published at 12.1 overs

Dunith Wellalage gets his first six of the innings.

He launches Josh Tongue's first ball over the cover boundary, a rare highlight for Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile Maheesh Theekshana is the new batter, starting at the non-striker's end.

How many times have we had 'caught Buttler' 'bowled Rashid' in England history?

    Luke, Birmingham

That was the 24th instance of c Buttler b Rashid across formats. Unsurprisingly Buttler has caught the most off Broad (45) and Anderson (50) in all cricket for England.

    Hasaranga b Overton 4 (SL 76-7)

A slower ball does for Wanindu Hasaranga.

Jamie Overton arrives as England's sixth bowler and, having conceded two runs from his first five balls, breaks the stumps of Hasaranga.

The seamer signals the slower delivery to his team-mates and the dressing room - he seems pretty chuffed with it.

  9. SL 74-6published at 11 overs

    Target 255

New batter Dunith Wellalage defends the final ball of Josh Tongue's over.

That was good bowling by Josh Tongue who, by rolling his fingers over the ball, tricked Mendis into thinking it was going to be faster than it was.

    Kamindu Mendis c Brook b Tongue 2 (SL 74-6)

Not the greatest of nights for Kamindu Mendis, he goes for two off eight.

He skies an off-cutter from Josh Tongue and Harry Brook is waiting when the ball comes down, having moved from mid-on.

Brook looks a little relieved having completed the catch, maybe he lost the ball a touch as it reached him.

England have got real identity to this team. One of the challenges of this format is finding the identity of a team. They have built a team and squad to compete.

  13. SL 71-5published at 10 overs

    Target 255

Wanindu Hasaranga is next up for Sri Lanka - he starts with a two into the covers.

That's the half way mark, England were 134-1 at this stage.

Sri Lanka would need 184 from 60 balls from here - a little unlikely, I'd say.

Shanaka will be wondering why he didn't try to murder that for six too. He committed to the previous shots but that was a tentative prod.

    Shanaka c Buttler b Rashid 24 (SL 69-5)

Not a bad response from Adil Rashid...

Having hit his two sixes, Dasun Shanaka nudges at the next delivery and edges behind to Jos Buttler.

Sri Lanka's most dangerous batter heads back to the dug-out.

  16. 6 runs

    SL 69-4published at 9.4 overs

    Hello, Dasun Shanaka!

He twice pummels Adil Rashid down the ground, picking up consecutive sixes.

The first clears the sight screen and the second flies wide of long-off.

Liam Dawson flicked the shoulder of Shanaka to try and get to that one. He looked like a striker trying to jostle for position at a corner to get his head on the ball.

  18. SL 56-4published at 9 overs

    Target 255

Not far from a second wicket in the over.

New batter Kamindu Mendis gets a leading edge from Liam Dawson's final delivery and the ball pops back to the right of his batting partner Dasun Shanaka.

Liam Dawson isn't impeded but his dive perhaps isn't as clean as it might have been if the non-striker hadn't been nearby.

The ball passes just past the fingertips of the diving spinner.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 8.2 overs

    Asalanka c Banton b Dawson 10 (SL 52-4)

The skipper goes for the big hit... and finds the fielder on the rope.

Charith Asalanka looks to plant Liam Dawson over the long-on boundary, but the left-hander drops the ball into the hands of Tom Banton, who barely has to move.

  20. How's stat?!published at 21:00 BST 15 September

Dasun Shanaka is averaging 31.20 in 2026 at a strike-rate of 178. His second highest batting average for a calendar year, and his highest ever strike-rate. He is in sublime form.
