It's a bright morning in the North East but a windy one. It's not too cold, though. We have highs of 17 to 18C today and there's little rain in the forecast.

Durham were put in on a difficult track yesterday and made their way to 302-7 by the close of play, picking up two batting points in the process.

Ben Raine and Matty Potts have put on 38 so far for the eighth wicket and if they could push Durham towards 350 that would be a bonus.

There was plenty in the pitch for the bowlers, with Ben Aitchison taking 4-57. It's green, slow and at times was quite low, with a few deliveries skidding through to the keeper and taking the batsmen by surprise.

From Derbyshire's point of view, I am sure they would have liked to have taken all 10 wickets yesterday, but they came up against some tenacious resistance from the likes of Graham Clark (51) David Bedingham (49) and Ollie Robinson (48).

However, while a few got starts with the bat, nobody went on to make a really big score. It's that kind of surface.

We had an enjoyable first day of cricket at Trent Bridge, in which the momentum shifted either way multiple times.

Nottinghamshire were on top in the opening stages, reducing Somerset to 47-3 inside the first 18 overs.

But a 122-run partnership between opener Jordan Hermann and 18-year-old Thomas Rew steadied the ship for the visitors until Rew was trapped by Mohammad Ali, who is making is red-ball debut for Notts, for a fine 68.

Hermann went on to make a century but three wickets in nine overs for the defending champions swung the game back in their favour with Somerset at 267-7.

Jack Leach has given as good as he gets though, for 21 from 21 balls, and Archie Vaughan remains unbeaten on 51.

You get the impression this is a vital morning in the match on day two. Will Notts rattle through the tail or can Somerset build a healthy total?

Essex coach Chris Silverwood believes Jordan Cox has put himself in the frame for a starting berth with England after his brilliant unbeaten 184 against Leicestershire.

Cox celebrated his call up to the England squad for the second Test against New Zealand with an unbeaten 184 as Essex racked up 342-5.

And Silverwood believes that his display could force the door open to the starting XI against the Black Caps at The Oval on Wednesday.

“Jordan might not have played in the IPL but he has been practising very hard while he's been out there, picking up lessons from Virat Kohli and people like that, so it's been a great learning curve for him.

"Now he wants to show his class and force his way into the England set-up. It's great that he's in the squad and I think more scores like this will force him into the XI as well.”

Essex are already in a strong position against the Foxes at Uptonsteel Grace Road but Silverwood says they now need to back-up a strong first day.

“We want to go on and score maximum points if we can, but we've got a lot of hard work to do to get there and we've got to make sure that we back up a good day with another good day."

Jonny Bairstow will look to press home Yorkshire's advantage when he resumes on 49 at Scarborough.

It's dry but very windy at North Marine Road and the first day's star, Will Luxton, believes the breeze has played a part - including in the moment when he brought up his maiden first-class century with a swept six.

"The wind was so strong so it looked like decent bowling conditions but I don't think it was. Especially at one end it was pretty tough to nail a good line and length," explained Luxton.

"The wind was going massively across with that shot into the stands. I wasn't thinking anything, it just sort of happened."

Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard has taken some encouragement from two late wickets at the end of yesterday.

"We probably didn't quite get it right in the first two sessions with the ball but it's a good cricket wicket. It can be fast scoring so if someone gets in and plays well like Will did it can be hard to defend," he admitted.

"Those couple of wickets late helped us into a better position and hopefully we can clean them up early in the morning."

Sussex bowling coach James Kirtley praised left-armer Jaydev Unadkat after the Indian took four wickets on his seasonal debut to help skittle Glamorgan on the opening day at Hove.

"Jaydev came back and bowled his heart out, which he's always done for us. That was the sixth time he's taken a four-for which just shows his quality and the commitment he has for this team," KIrtley said.

"To have his influence, even when he's standing at mid-on or mid-off, for the other bowlers in the team to feed off is brilliant. There's no greater example for them than Jaydev."

All 10 Glamorgan wickets fell to catches and Kirtley added: "Catching is something we've done incredibly well in recent years and we saw that again, particularly behind the wicket. It gives the bowlers confidence when they know if the edges carry they are going to be caught."

Liam Livingstone stole the headlines twice over on day one at Stanley Park in Blackpool.

The 32-year-old was the talk of the town pre-match after returning to the Lancashire line-up for a County Championship game for the first time in almost five years.

Then Livingstone took 5-55 bowling off and leg-spin to help skittle Kent for 178.

The visitors looked in good shape at tea with 111-2 but collapsed to lose eight wickets for just 67 runs.

Kent have responded well with the ball though and Keith Dudgeon removed both Harry Singh and Keaton Jennings in the evening session to leave Lancs 17-2 at close.

This one is shaping up to be an enticing second day.

Graham Clark admitted it had been a case of "graft", not fluent strokeplay, for Division Two leaders Durham after they collected a second bonus point just before stumps on day one against Derbyshire.

All nine batsmen who made it to the middle reached double figures, but Clark's 51 off 137 balls was the highest score.

"We knew it would take a lot of graft – it was that type of wicket, two-paced, very difficult to find your timing – and there’s still plenty there for the bowlers," he said.

"To get sent in on a tricky wicket and get 300 for seven, we’d take that every time. We thought 280 would be a good score, and we’re already past that with the chance to get a few more. It’s an evenly balanced game but I’d like to think we’re slightly ahead."

There are also four matches in the Women's One-Day Cup today.

Group leaders The Blaze have travelled to Beckenham to face second-placed Surrey, while Somerset, in third, take on Hampshire at Taunton.

Essex are at home to Durham, while Warwickshire meet Lancashire at Edgbaston.

BBC Weather forecaster Ben Rich says: "After a week that has brought us plenty of cool weather, and plenty of wet weather, things do look a little different over the weekend.

"We will see more in the way of dry weather, some spells of relatively warm June sunshine with just a few showers in the mix, but it's not going to be a heatwave because the winds will be coming down from the north west."

Not too bad, then - we should see plenty of action again today.

When not describing the machinations of the Red Headed League, Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a member of a cricket team called The Authors.
