It's not been silly, it's been a brilliant innings so far from Harry Brook.

    As easy as you like.

Harry Brook casually dabs the ball down to deep third for a single and cruises to a 42-ball half-century. He's hit three sixes and two fours so far, and he should now be able to cash in on a good pitch.

Great to see Brook and Root doing Brook and Root things but all our eggs really are in one basket. If either gets out, and both have come close, then 150-2 could be 250 all out. We need another batter at five. Sam Hain would get my vote.

  4. Eng 167-2published at 28 overs

Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis immediately whips Janith Liyanage out of the attack after his only over so far was whacked for 16, knowing the innings is already drifting away from them.

It doesn't really matter who's bowling, though. Harry Brook whacks Dasun Shanaka for four, beating despairing dives from two fielders as Sri Lanka's struggles in the field continue.

The skies have cleared in Gqeberha and South Africa's bid to beat Australia has just begun.

Australia resumed still 170 runs behind South Africa's first-innings score with six wickets left.

There should still be time for the Proteas to get their six wickets. Can they finish it off?

If England stick with these two for the next three overs then they know they can flick a switch with 20 overs to go.

Sri Lanka know they need a wicket soon.

  7. Eng 155-2published at 27 overs

Singles galore off Asitha Fernando's tidy over, but Brook and Root look untroubled. England have got a fine platform here to kick on way past 300.

There's plenty of batters left for England but these two won't want to leave it up to anyone else. They will want a big defendable total here.

And because Sri Lanka are only using four frontline bowlers, England have the chance to punish their fifth bowler and take on Janith Liyanage.

  9. Eng 149-2published at 26 overs

Big over for England, 16 from it.

The partnership between Brook and Root is now worth 64.

    Thanks, Mike.

Well, Harry Brook is on the charge. He greets medium pacer Janith Liyanage with a thumping four down the ground before slog-sweeping for six with disdain.

  11. Eng 133-2published at 25 overs

    Oooh, chopped past the stumps.

Joe Root inside edges Dilshan Madushanka's delivery just past his wicket. He looks a little stalled at the minute - having reached 16 from 12 balls he's now on 25 from 30.

Here's Ffion Wynne to take you through the rest of the innings.

Why not make an ODI league or championship? Make all these games count for something. It could even be tied to World Cup qualification.

  13. Eng 130-2published at 24 overs

One more single for Harry Brook takes him to 26 from 27 balls.

Joe Root faces a couple of dot balls to finish the over from Kamindu Mendis.

Overpitched from the bowler and punished for that. Harry Brook, even though he is struggling for his rhythm, isn't going to miss out on that on the half-volley.

    Brook makes no mistake.

    There's the boundaries!

Harry Brook hits consecutive sixes off Kamindu Mendis, hitting a floaty delivery over long-off and then a slamming a drag-down over mid-wicket.

A couple more singles are all that comes from Dilshan Madushanka's over.

England's wait for a boundary continues.

Didn’t go hard enough in the first 10 before spin comes on to haunt England again.

England are biding their time again here. With Joe Root and Harry Brook, their two premier one-day players, they are attempting to build a partnership.

  19. Eng 115-2published at 22 overs

Kamindu Mendis becomes Sri Lanka's sixth bowler of the day and the spinner concedes four runs from his first over.

England have scored 19 runs off the last five overs, with no boundaries.

Good decision by the umpire because the bowler came from quite wide.

Joe Root has had his lbw issues in the past and Sri Lanka would be wise to use that ball against him.
