  1. 17 points away from top flightpublished at 11:08 BST 8 September

    Durham 34-0 v Middlesex

It's worth reiterating that Durham need a maximum of 17 points to achieve promotion back to Division One.

That is working on the basis that Northants collect three full 24-point wins in their last three games.

So it could well be a lot less.

To get through the first 35 minutes of a day's play in September is always a good effort, so they are starting this game in the manner they have played all summer.

  2. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:07 BST 8 September

    McCann c Brown b Abbott 1 (Notts 20-2 v Hants)

Conditions are very much in Hampshire's favour - a greenish pitch and overhead cloud - but you can't take anything away from Kyle Abbott.

The South African claims his second victim as Freddie McCann pushes hard at a ball which leaves him off the pitch and is caught behind.

Joe Clarke is the next man in but at this rate, we could be seeing Notts debutant Mitch Hay - down to bat at six - quite soon.

"It Notts are still batting after tea, either Hampshire have not bowled well or Notts have batted unbelievably well," says BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James.

  3. Restart soon? Not quitepublished at 11:06 BST 8 September

    Yorkshire 9-0 v Essex

What we can say with confidence is the rain had stopped and the ground staff were mopping up...

So naturally, the rain has just returned!

  4. No play before lunch at Grace Roadpublished at 11:01 BST 8 September

    Leic v Som

Groundstaff mopping up at Grace RoadImage source, Shutterstock

The groundstaff are playing around with the covers, actually exposing the pitch currently, which shows it is not raining as we watch, but the umpires are not content that the entire playing area is going to be fit for play anytime soon, so sadly this one will have to wait until the afternoon.

  5. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Old Traffordpublished at 11:01 BST 8 September

    Lancashire v Glos 11-1

The rain has come across very quickly at Old Trafford, the covers are coming on and the players are heading off.

We've had seven overs of cricket.

It could be one of those days.

  6. Postpublished at 11:01 BST 8 September

    Notts 18-1 v Hants

Just a two-over spell for Eddie Jack as Hampshire call up Scott Currie as first change. Freddie McCann is now at the crease for Notts following the dismissal of Haseeb Hameed in the previous over.

  7. Postpublished at 11:00 BST 8 September

    Durham 22-0 v Middlesex

Durham will be reasonably happy with their opening half-an-hour as Alex Lees and Ben McKinney steadily accumulate.

Tom Helm and young Naavya Sharma are sharing the new ball duties.

No Toby Roland-Jones for them this week.

  8. Who is Derbys' new opener Muhammed Yusaf Bin Naeem?published at 10:57 BST 8 September

    Derbys 11-2 v Kent

A reminder that Muhammed Yusaf Bin Naeem scored a nerveless half- century on debut to put Derbyshire in a strong position against Gloucestershire at Bristol last week.

He became the first Derbyshire player to score a half-century on debut since Tony Borrington made 70 against Essex at Ilford in 1971.

But they went on to lose that match for the second time this year.

The 20-year-old Derby-born batter posted 71 from 119 balls with seven fours and two sixes in the first innings, but it was not enough in the end as Gloucestershire spun to win in the fourth innings.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 10:56 BST 8 September

    Hameed c Brown b Abbott (Notts 18-1 v Hants)

    Kyle AbbottImage source, Shutterstock

How often have we seen Kyle Abbott take a wicket in that fashion?

A little bit of nip off the pitch, a thin edge to the keeper, and Haseeb Hameed is gone.

Number 54 of the campaign for Division One's leading wicket-taker.

  10. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 10:55 BST 8 September

    Lancashire v Glos 7-1

Jimmy Anderson has one wicket and he should have two.

He gets a big edge from Joe Phillips that flies to Ben Walkden at second slip but he can't hang on.

Not the easiest chance, but he does get two hands to it and will think he should have clung on.

  11. ouch!

Postpublished at 10:53 BST 8 September

    Notts 16-0 v Hampshire

    Now, that will sting!

Eddie Jack gets it all wrong and bowls a full toss which is so high that it strikes Ben Slater flush on the arm.

The batter immediately flings his willow to the floor and the physio is on.

  12. Postpublished at 10:51 BST 8 September

    Derbys 8-2 v Kent

Former captain of Repton School's first team (though he missed the One-Day Cup game at Repton) Muhammed Yusaf Bin Naeem has managed to negotiate the Bangladeshi quick Hasan Mahmud alongside Wayne Madsen for two overs now.

Whilst Grant Stewart has posed less threat from t'other end.

    Four overs gone.

As always, we want to hear from you during the day's play. Here's a couple of early contributions....

Loans are the only way a small county like Leics can compete. Especially if the ECB give us point deductions for pitches...

    David, Leicester

Middlesex have got the paperwork wrong with Leus du Plooy. Unable to play again this season!! Massive Admin Error

    Atco, Plymouth

He'll certainly be a big loss.

  14. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Leedspublished at 10:42 BST 8 September

    Yorkshire 9-0 v Essex

10 minutes and 15 balls into the game, we're off for rain.

Well, we probably need a bit given the scorching heat earlier in the summer.

    But even so...

  15. Pitch inspection at 11 at Grace Roadpublished at 10:42 BST 8 September

    Leic v Somerset

The covers are still on, but it is brightening over a pitch that probably won't look like one for the Glamorgan game here in August .

See earlier piece about the Foxes pitch adjudication on that one.

  16. Postpublished at 10:40 BST 8 September

    Derbys 4-2 v Kent

Well, Wayne Madsen is often Derbyshire's saviour, and often has to come in far earlier than he would like to, but he navigates four balls safely to get through the first over.

Hasan Mahmud with three dots then an edged four by Madsen past the cordon to get the Derbyshire scoring underway.

Muhammed Yusaf Bin Naeem, wondering what on earth is going on from the non-strikers' end, will now face Grant Stewart.

  17. Green 'un at Trent Bridgepublished at 10:40 BST 8 September

    Notts 8-0 v Hampshire

    Ben SlaterImage source, Shutterstock

A first view of the Trent Bridge pitch has BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James describing it as looking like an "artificial pitch".

The surface doesn't just have a green tinge, it's full-on green.

Batting could be a bit tricky. And your cricket brain says 'this is a result pitch'.

  18. Postpublished at 10:38 BST 8 September

    Yorkshire 7-0 v Essex

Shane Snater shares the new ball with Jamie Porter.

Will Luxton is able to leave the ball safely first up - and he drives the second ball through cover for a single.

In the air for a bit but safe enough.

He trades singles with Lyth - who sees out the over.

  19. wicket

WICKET Two in first two balls at Derby!published at 10:37 BST 8 September

    Montgomery lbw b Mahmud 0 (Derbyshire 0-2 v Kent)

    Unbelievable!

Do not think we have ever reported on a hat-trick first three balls of a match, bit early in the morning for this drama!

This one comes back in to Matt Montgomery and an easy decision made this time by the umpire, 0-2 off two balls!
