I have seen Tom Banton do this in a Somerset shirt for years and only now have England realised he can open the batting. With Ben Duckett currently struggling, the World Cup places are up for grabs when you include Jacob Bethell and Jamie Smith.

What a career milestone for Tom Banton, he's coming into that phase where you can tell he knows his game now, really had to knuckle down.

What a brilliant innings, one he'll remember for a long time.

    Banton c Malinga b Colombage 126 (Eng 242-4)

    Four, four, gone.

Tom Banton hits Sachindu Colombage for consecutive fours, but the spinner has his revenge from the last ball of the over.

The England opener gets balls over the ropes at mid-wicket and in the covers but can't make it three in a row, lifting the ball to Eshan Malinga at long-on.

An excellent innings comes to an end.

One more single off the rest of Asitha Fernando's over.

Sachindu Colombage is going to continue at the other end.

  6. 6 runs

    Eng 230-3published at 36.4 overs

Once again, Jordan Cox starts an over by facing three dot balls and then scores off the fourth.

It's a big shot this time, launching Asitha Fernando into the crowd at long-on.

It’s good to see England evolving in this format. Each match seems to have a game plan now and geared towards using the obvious talent we have in the squad.

Jordan Cox is trying to play quite attacking shots when he's not too sure what the balls doing.

  9. Eng 224-3published at 36 overs

    Back comes Sachindu Colombage.

The leg-spinner opens with three dot balls to Jordan Cox, getting some big turn with the third of those to beat the bat.

The next delivery turns too, with the ball seeming to brush Cox's bat it does enough to confuse Kusal Mendis behind the stumps and England's batters run three.

  10. Eng 219-3published at 35 overs

    Here comes Jordan Cox.

He gets off the mark from his second ball - knocking Asitha Fernando into the covers and running a swift single, beating the throw of Dunith Wellalage.

Well I have to say from that ball, Fernando tightened up the delivery, onto the stumps and forced Harry Brook to open up.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 34.4 overs

    Brook c Wellalage b Fernando 77 (Eng 218-3)

Harry Brook has been excellent form, but hasn't been able to covert into three figures today.

With a wristy shot wide of third he brings up the 150 partnership off 19.2 overs - with the last 100 coming off nine overs - but departs from the following ball.

He mis-times a drive off Asitha Fernando and Dunith Wellalage runs to his left at mid-off to collect the catch.

Tom Banton's century today is only the fourth by an England ODI opener since the 2023 World Cup, Ben Duckett has scored the other three.

That's a shot from someone who knows the field well, he didn't have to hit it too hard. Well played.

    Six, six, four!

Tom Banton is cruising now - he pulls Dilshan Madushanka over the mid-wicket ropes and then lifts the seamer over long-off, not even appearing to swing particularly hard.

A further four comes through the covers - Banton is now on 117.

  16. Eng 197-2published at 33.2 overs

Harry Brook slashes at Dilshan Madushanka and sends a flying edge through an empty cordon for four.

We'll have a break as the physios are on to look at Madushanka's foot - he appears to have some bandaging there.

It comes down to quality England batting, clever England batting.

It's not a pitch where you can come out and play your shots at will. It has a few challenges and has a bit of adjusting to do and England have done that well.

  18. Eng 192-2published at 33 overs

Harry Brook finishes Dunith Wellalage's over in the same way he started it.

He had smacked the spinner's opening delivery through the covers for four, and ends Wellalage's over with another slapped shot through a similar area.
