This new ball will be very crucial. We expect an uneven bounce on this pitch.

A good start is what will make the Sri Lankans feel happier.

England's players are walking out to the middle.

Jordan Cox has the gloves after he came in to replace the injured Jos Buttler.

Comment earlier about England needing to bat a solid 250 as 320 wasn't on. This is what we love (and hate) about this team!

Jordan Cox is the epitome of "taking your opportunities". If and when Root does decide to hang up the boots, we have a ready made replacement. Class.

I think that's too little too late, 355 is a massive score in these conditions. But none of us expected Sri Lanka to come with that performance.

Some quality stroke play from England, especially in the second half of the innings.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 50 overs

    Dawson b Fernando (Eng 355-7)

Asitha Fernando finishes the innings with consecutive wicket balls.

It's Liam Dawson who is one and done, getting to face a single delivery and inevitably taking a bit of a swing.

Fernando's ball is a yorker and it clips Dawson's boot, taking a delivery that was probably heading down on to the base of leg stump.

The Sri Lanka seamer finishes with figures of 3-64 from nine overs, meanwhile his side will chase 356.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 49.5 overs

    Cox b Fernando 76 (Eng 355-6)

Gone from the penultimate ball of the innings.

Jordan Cox drops to try and scoop Asitha Fernando over fine leg, but can't connect and his exposed stumps are broken.

An excellent 52-ball innings from Cox.

Sri Lanka has for some reason put a lot of full tosses to Overton and Cox, letting them take fours and sixes.

  12. How's stat?!published at 14:18 BST 27 September

Sri Lanka's catch success of 64% in this tour (18 catches, 10 drops) is the lowest for any touring side in England since catching records began in 2006 (min 6 matches).

Jordan Cox brings up England's 350, lashing Asitha Fernando through backward square.

That's his sixth four of the innings.

    Audacious!

Jordan Cox drops into a reverse sweep stance and chases a wide-ish delivery from Eshan Malinga, stretching to lift the ball right behind wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis for four.

    One over to go.

Does anyone else think Cox looks the real deal? Calmness, class, character. I back him for a run in the Test team. Adds a dimension I haven't seen for a few years.

The wheels are really falling off here for Sri Lanka.

  18. Eng 331-5published at 47.5 overs

    Oh dear.

Jamie Overton sends Asitha Fernando's delivery out wide of mid-wicket, with Charith Asalanka running to collect.

He tries to collect with one hand but lets the ball slip through for four.

Overton struck a pair of twos of either side of that ball, one of them off an over-step no ball, before getting off strike with a single to long-off.

  19. Eng 317-5published at 47 overs

Jordan Cox finishes Eshan Malinga's over with a reverse-scooped two through backward point and a four to the fine leg ropes.

    Should have been taken!

Jamie Overton lumps Eshan Malinga's slower ball out to long-on, where Janith Liyanage manages to spill a pretty simple catch.

Overton takes a single to move to four.
