    Kamindu c Duckett b Atkinson 12 (SL 36-2)

    Gus Atkinson strikes!

Kamindu Mendis is trying take the aerial route again but all he manages here is to send the ball a mile into the sky. It's one of those nervy catches for Ben Duckett at square leg but, having had plenty of time to think about it, he gobbles it up.

    England are on their way.

  2. Eng 33-1published at 6 overs

I reckon England will start doing exactly the same once the new-ball swing has worn off, Fred. It's getting darker.

May be a rhetorical question but could someone explain why when England throw the ball in it goes into the keepers gloves and Sri Lanka “bounced “ it in?

    Target 356

The lights have just popped on at the end of the over. Grey clouds have built overhead.

That went 10 rows back, a similar shot, but Gus Atkinson didn't get the height on Kusal Mendis.

Mendis flat bats it, and he has a bit more time to hit it in front of square.

    SL 24-1published at 4.4 overs

And again! This one is a little squarer from Sri Lanka's captain.

A trademark shot from Kusal Mendis.

If you watch him bat, you see him play that shot every innings

  8. 6 runs

    SL 18-1published at 4.2 overs

This is as big as we've seen all day! Kusal Mendis into the stands over fine leg.

With players like Bethell, Rashid and Curran returning, what's our World Cup XI looking like? Mine is: Tom Banton, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, David Payne (sub - Liam Livingstone). What would everyone else go for?

    Harry, Box CC

  10. SL 11-1published at 4 overs

    Target 356

Sonny Baker had figures of 0-34 after two overs of his only previous ODI. 1-6 are his numbers today.

This is only the third time that Jofra Archer has not taken the new ball for England in ODIs. The previous occasions were against South Africa (Kimberley 2023) and Bangladesh (Chattogram 2023).

This is the first time in any format since June 2024 (v SA in T20 WC) - he's opened in 68 consecutive innings across formats since then.

  12. SL 10-1published at 3.3 overs

I've just watched that Sonny Baker wicket again. It really was a good ball. I hadn't appreciated how much it had seamed away too.

Now he tests Kusal Mendis with a rapid yorker.

Game over - 250 would probably have been enough, 355 is beyond attainable. Sri Lanka all out for 150.

    Tony Simpson, Loughborough

Jordan Cox will be the ideal replacement for Buttler when he retires from international cricket. Hope Jos Buttler doesn’t retire yet. He still quality.

    Chetan, Bolton

  14. SL 6-1published at 3 overs

Harry Brook, never one to err on the side of defence, has two slips in place for Gus Atkinson's second over. Kamindu Mendis responds by going on the attack himself, whacking the England seamer up and over the in-field. The boundary is the only scoring shot in the over, however.

Will be the ideal time to bowl for England. Very breezy and windy conditions now. Ball will swing very well.

    Chetan, Bolton

Cox and Smith could easily share keeping duties on Test tours. Lightening loads for batting.

    James, Moira

  16. SL 2-1published at 2 overs

    Target 356

Sonny Baker is almost pawing at the grass at the top of his mark. His enthusiasm gets the better of him once as he bangs in one high and wide down the leg side but he's getting a big ovation as he returns to his fielding position at the end of the over.

This is Sonny Baker's second ODI and in his first ODI last year he took 0-76 in seven overs.

There we go. The extra bounce, and Jordan Cox takes it above his head.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.2 overs

    Nissanka c Cox b Baker 1 (SL 1-1)

Baker delivers a seed! What a beauty this is. The young England quick, given the new ball rather than Jofra Archer, gets the ball to rise and take the edge of Pathum Nissanka. Wicketkeeper Jordan Cox takes the ball above his head. Brilliant stuff.

It's been a fascinating summer for English cricket. It is very hard to grade.

There is so much going on, on and off the pitch.
