The clouds have built again now as Joe Root finds the fielder again. He walks off towards square-leg and replays the shot to himself, suggesting he should have rolled the wrists a bit more. You don't see him like this very often.

That is a lovely shot from Tom Banton, and that is what patience does for you.

He leans into it and he finds the gap.

  3. Eng 58-1published at 12.3 overs

That releases the pressure. Tom Banton flicks classically for four through mid-wicket.

Why do players like Joe Clarke and Sam Hain, constantly get overlooked despite being proven run scorers? However, Duckett gets numerous chances to prove himself and fails.

    Banton 35, Root 16

Joe Root shows his frustration by, after missing a pull shot as his run of dots grows to 10, switching his bat around in his hands to suggest he'd be better off hitting with the handle.

Tom Banton needs to not let this bother him at the other end.

  6. Eng 52-1published at 11.5 overs

Joe Root has gone nine deliveries without scoring now since being dropped...

  7. How's stat?!published at 11:25 BST 27 September

That was Sri Lanka's eighth dropped catch of the tour (15 catches, 8 drops, 65% catch success).

Today's stats provided by CricViz's Kieran Parmley.

  8. Eng 51-1published at 11 overs

Joe Root hasn't quite found the gaps as he usually does to rotate the strike - his strike-rate is down below 60 - and calls for a change of bat as a result. He looks a little frustrated after facing five dots through this over.

A good little start. That wicket of Joe Root would have made such a big difference.

A mistake like that can take the wind out of those lungs.

Sri Lanka need to pick themselves up from there and get their head up, but it is not easy, especially against a good team.

That drop ensures England edge the powerplay, even if they have been relatively careful. Will Joe Root make Pathum Nissanka pay?

That is massive. That is a massive opportunity.

It goes straight into Pathum Nissanka's breadbasket. That is an opportunity which has gone begging.

  12. dropped catch

Root dropped on 15published at 9.1 overs

Through Pathum Nissanka! Joe Root fiddles outside off stump and Nissanka is there lurking at a third slip when the ball takes the edge. It goes straight to him. He's barely got a hand on it.

England are slightly cautious, and they want to make sure they set a foundation.

Joe Root is the wicket that Sri Lanka want.

The Oval, which is already pretty much full, is humming.

I'd still pick Duckett because I've not seen anyone better.

    Banton 28, Root 14

The risk of Tom Banton losing his record of highest score for Somerset has just been averted with team-mate Tom Abell out for 307 in Taunton.

He's a nice guy. I don't think he'd be celebrating, even if he did know. He pulls for four in this latest over.

    Sri Lanka are still threatening.

Duckett has to be dropped at this stage, not scoring in T20, ODI or Tests - not sure many players have had as many repeated chances to succeed without capitalising on it.

Wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis takes a rising ball from Malinga in front of his eyes and his reaction suggests he's been taken aback by that bounce. Mendis was almost knocked backwards.

Malinga has started well, with Banton edging another delivery that climbs over the slips.

The sun is out after a gloomy morning and that makes all Sri Lankans feel pretty happy with themselves, especially after Leeds and the result.

There is a bit of uneven bounce on offer, which we have seen from both ends. This is the challenge you will face out here.
